Organisation and structure
The Road Technical Association - ATC (Asociación Técnica de Carreteras - ATC) provides
the secretariat for the Spanish National Committee of PIARC.
ATC has 20 national committees, 12 active, with approximately 30 members per committee,
15 active. They must support international members as well as studying interesting themes
in Spain.

Jornada sobre las transiciones obra de paso – terraplén (Conference of structureembankment transitions), 14th March 2007, Madrid. 230 delegates attended the
conference.
II Jornada sobre Matriales Marginales (II Conference of marginal materials), 21 March
2007, Madrid. 370 delegates attended the conference.
Seminario Internacional de Riesgos en Carreteras (International Seminar of Risk
Management), 3rd and 4th May 2007, Cartagena de Indias – Colombia. 130 delegates
attended the seminar.
Jornada sobre Muros de Escollera (Conference of rock walls), November, Madrid. 200
delegates are expected to attend the conference.

The Spanish National Committee publishes a bimonthly magazine, Rutas (Routes in
Spanish language), which is sent to ATC members and to several Latin-American

PIARC prize 2007 competition
The Spanish National Committee has organized the national section of the PIARC prize
2007 competition for Spain and for Spanish-speaking countries without a national
competition.
The Spanish prize winners which have been awarded by 3000 € are as follows:
First PIARC Prize 2007 on Road construction, maintenance and exploitation:
Prize owner: Mr. Luis M. Xumini Soler
Title: Risk and safety on the road system.
Second PIARC Prize 2007 on Road safety:
Price owners: a team of professors from the UNED University
Title: Psychosocial factors and detected risk. Driving in road tunnels.
Third PIARC Prize 2007 on best work achieved by a team of young professionals:
Prize owners: a team of young professionals leaded by Mr. Francisco M. Cabeza
Title: Thousand roads to communicate.
All prize winners have been informed about the possibility of taking part in the International
PIARC Prize competition by sending his works translated into English.

Spain is represented in 15 of the 18 Technical Committees with 33 delegates.

A survey is distributed to delegates in each event. Until now the Spanish NC activity is

DETAILED REPORT ON HIGHLIGHTS
Conference on Structure –Embankment Transitions
Madrid, 14 March 2007
Under the name “Structure-Embankment Transitions”, the Bridges
Technical Committee of the Technical Association of Roads,
Spanish National Committee of PIARC, has organised last 14
March in Madrid, a conference to launch their last publication
gathering more than 240 professionals.
The meaning of these conferences was to offer a meeting and
debate forum for exchange of national and international knoledges
and experiences about this subject as well as the last innovated
actuations implemented. In order to provide a global vision about
the problem on lineal infrastructures, many rail sector experts
participated in the conference as well.
II Conference on Marginal Materials for Road Works
Seville, 21 March 2007
Last 21 March 2007, the Road Geotechnic Technical Committee of
the Technical Association of Roads, has gathered in Seville 360
road professionals during the II Conference on Marginal Materials
for Roads Works. This edition doubled the assistance estimated so
in extremis it has been necessary to habilitate a new conference
room with real time transmission.
Following the tradition of previous conference, on this occasion,
new techniques and experiences for using marginal materials have
been expounded by prestigious experts.
New publications
The Interurban Roads and Interurban Integrated Transport
Technical Committee has published recently a book on “The road
transversal section: a safety design” where innovated road
transversal section designs for safety improvement are technically
justified.
Next 30 May, Sandro Rocci, Technical Committee president will
launch the new publication on a monographic session which will
open to all Spanish technicians.
