FORE WORD
Foreword

Europäischen Union unterstützten Projekte (H2020) fest, was unsere
DE
EN The certainty of growth, the growth of uncertainty
In 2015 CSEM pursued its development activities in many strategic
fields, and aimed for a growth in revenues from direct collaboration with
industry. While our continuing growth may come as a surprise during a
period of economic instability, we see this as a clear sign of confidence
from the industrial sector in both CSEM and the innovation process
—a true necessity in our country.
In parallel, we observed fierce competition for European Union supported projects (H2020) and, as a consequence, a decreased success
rate in obtaining this kind of mandate.
The year 2015 was also marked by the completion of our new cleanrooms, dedicated to MEMS and photovoltaic technology. These facilities
will enable us to enhance our competencies and services in sectors that
contribute to the well-being of the planet and its citizens, while creating
high-value-added jobs.
We invite you to discover a small sample of the projects that have
made this a successful year for CSEM in industrial domains of key
strategic importance for Switzerland, including micro-mechanical
systems, medical devices, photovoltaic energy generation, and environmental monitoring. The projects highlighted in this Annual Report
also exemplify CSEM’s prioritization of its work with SMEs throughout
Switzerland—work that reinforces what we believe to be the industrial
cornerstones of a solid economy.
At CSEM, we define as a successful year one during which our people
and our projects continue to deliver value and inspire confidence. Thus,
2015 was a success because it saw us continue, without wavering, in our
mission of developing technological advancements that open doors to an
ever more prosperous and sustainable future.

Nobody left behind thanks to wireless tracking
The European project Lynceus2Market is developing powerful tools to enable commanders of large
ships to efficiently locate people during evacuation. Using CSEM ultra-low power wireless “ icycom ”
technology, the project proposes an innovative, unobtrusive localization system able to display the
positions of individuals as dots on a screen and assess individuals’ health status at the same time.
Wearable items such as life jackets and bracelets or key cards are enhanced with vital sign sensing
and wireless capabilities. These devices indicate their positions precisely based on the strength
of their signals received by a network of augmented smoke detectors. CSEM is working with key
actors in the cruise industry to develop a large-scale, real-environment demonstration in 2018,
involving 7,000 devices and 5,000 passengers and crew.

Ingenious traceability solution for the pharma industry
In response to the enormous economic losses and health risks posed by counterfeit medication,
researchers at CSEM have developed a novel anti-counterfeiting and track-and-trace technology
for drugs. The EU project known as SAVEmed is a consortium of public and private institutions and
companies that brings together know-how in fields as diverse as nanotechnology and crime fighting
to defend both patients’ and pharmaceutical companies’ interests.
Using micro-barcodes molded directly onto pills and holograms incorporated into thermoformed
packaging, the team created an impossible-to-crack medication cryptography. The SAVEmed consortium innovated along the chain of production, from the pills’ stamping to their packaging. CSEM
expects to apply this technology to a wide range of applications outside the pharmaceutical sector
over the next few years, working with industrial partners in the region and around the world.

Nouvelles approches
FR
Neue Ansätze zur Herstellung
von Solarzellen
Die Zusammenarbeit vom CSEM mit INDEOtec
schreibt ein neues Kapitel der Photovoltaik Forschung & Entwicklung: Die Firma INDEOtec hat
ein Konzept für einen neuen PECVD (Plasma
Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) Reaktor
New methods
for producing solar cells
CSEM’s collaboration with INDEOtec brings
photovoltaic R&D to the next level. INDEOtec
developed and patented the concept of a new
type of deposition reactor that promises to
revolutionize the manufacturing process of
high-efficiency solar cells by eliminating costly
steps. CSEM quickly recognized the potential
impact and selected the technology for further
co-development.
INDEOtec’s novel OCTOPUS system for silicon
heterojunction solar cell fabrication combines
several technologies and processes in one
apparatus. A mirror reactor makes deposition
on both sides of a wafer possible without flipping or breaking the vacuum. Initially funded
by the Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI), the process could prove to be a
new industry benchmark for mass production,
reducing production cost by 30-40% and allowing time-consuming manipulation and handling
to be avoided.

Jahren mehrere Spitzen-Demonstratoren her.
Gleichzeitig entwickelte das CSEM Brasilien
in Belo Horizonte Rolle-zu-Rolle Verfahren
gegründeten Spin-Off SUNEW hergestellt und
vermarktet werden.

Organic Photovoltaics:
Truly green solar power
CSEM is leading the way in a promising new
area of solar energy known as organic photovoltaics (OPV)—a technology that is both
environmentally friendly and economically
viable. In 2015 the consortium Rhine-Solar
concluded a three-year project that aimed to
reinforce the technology’s potential economic
impact in the Upper Rhine region.
While still being developed, OPV cells contain
no toxic elements and can be mass-produced
on large rolls much like those of a printing
press. CSEM—engaged in the development of
these printable, customizable, flexible solar
cells for the past four and a half years through
the successful european project Sunflower—
played a bridging role in the Rhine-Solar
project by connecting the worlds of pure
research and industrial production. Over the
last years, CSEM produced several high-performance demonstrators.
In parallel, CSEM Brasil at Belo Horizonte
develops roll-to-roll technologies of OPV cells.
In 2015, the spin-off SUNEW was created to
produce and commercialize the OPV cells with
an industrial production capacity of 400 000 m2
per year.

Theorie gelernt.”
„Auch als Lehrling werde ich
vom Projektleiter aufgefordert,
meinen Input zu geben und zu
sagen, was ich denke.“
entschieden. ”

Diversity and variety are deeply embedded in the CSEM’s DNA
Professionals from almost 50 countries and from four different continents work together to ensure
the success of CSEM—the majority joining us already enriched by their diverse experience in the
academic or industrial sectors. At the heart of our company, young people just starting their
careers work alongside experts with a wealth of experience; the apprentice talks with the CEO;
the physicist collaborates with the electrical engineer. CSEM’s professional culture is distinguished
by its open-mindedness, respect for others’ differences, and the joy of discovery.
Our diversity is our strength. The variety of our projects, the multiplicity of our partnerships, but above
all the rich professional backgrounds of the women and men who comprise CSEM—so many skills
that allow us to look to the future with serenity.
Lea Mühlebach (19), pursuing a fourth year apprentice as a physics laboratory technician,
and Ivar Kjelberg (61), PhD in Physics and a research expert in systems and instruments for
the space industry—working at CSEM since 1988—discuss the differences and similarities
of their chosen professions.
Why embark on a career in physics?
Lea Mühlebach: “As a child, I always wanted
to understand precisely how an object functioned. For example, where do color effects on
an ID card come from? I was good at science,
and I looked further than just the theory. So an
apprenticeship as a physics laboratory technician with a technology major was ideal.”
Ivar Kjelberg: “My friends and I would take
motors apart at home; that combined practice
with theory.”
What brought you to CSEM?
LM: “I already had my sights set on CSEM a
year before the end of my compulsory education, particularly as it’s close to home.”
IK: “The deciding factors for me were the variety of technical disciplines and the knowledge
of my colleagues. Also the chance to learn
multiple languages and to travel.”
How do you experience diversity day to day?
IK: “Every day we seek compromises, which
is both tedious and rewarding. In this way
our multidisciplinary solutions are more
sophisticated and beneficial to all—including our clients.”
LM: “I’m fascinated with finding new ways
of reaching the same result. Thanks to my
colleagues I was able to finish my personal
project, which counts toward my final grade,
much faster.”
“Even though I’m only an apprentice, the project manager still asks
me for my opinion. “
Lea Mühlebach
How do collaborations with colleagues
from abroad work?
LM: “During lunch or on professional outings,
it’s great to discover other languages, new
approaches to food, and other ways of seeing life.”
IK: “For me, it’s a gift to find myself face to
face with new things every day. Science knows
no borders; the same is true of our technical
knowledge, and this is a critical advantage on
international projects.”
Mr. Kjelberg, would you change
anything in your career path?
No. I’ve always given my best, given what
I had and what I knew at the time. With time, of
“ I probably wouldn’t have survived
at a company where people speak
only one language. “
Ivar Kjelberg
course, better tools and processes came along
to make my daily work easier—enjoyment and
the desire to progress have never left me.”
Ms. Mühlebach, where do you see
yourself in five years?
“I would be happy to continue my studies
at a technical college. The theoretical basis
of physics is the same everywhere. I‘d like
to experience the differences in practice, by
working in a research center or for a company
in Australia or Canada.”

FR Rapport financier 2015

Strong growth in revenues from industry
CSEM’s total turnover for 2015 was CHF 79.6 million. This decrease of 3.5% should be seen in the light
of the large one-off investment from the cantons in 2014; a more valid comparison is to 2013, which
shows growth of 6.9%.
The income generated from industrial clients increased by 9%, reaching a total of CHF 25 million.
Our support for this sector of the economy was further intensified by an increase of 23% in our
participation in the CTI program.
Access to Europe’s H2020 program has proved increasingly difficult and for CSEM this has resulted
in a decline of 16% of revenues in this category in 2015.
The measures necessary for managing these negative conditions were handled rapidly and
successfully, such that—in spite of a negative margin of exploitation—the year ended with a positive
net result of CHF 234,000.
During the year, CSEM’s capital increased due to the entry of two new strategic shareholders
from the energy sector and from the renewed participation of current shareholders. This further
reinforces CSEM’s long-term financial capacity in terms of equity and cash.
