Juggling Elements of Student Life - Introduction
Juggling Elements of Student Life - Introduction
Starting college or university can be very exciting. You may feel like you want to try everything or maybe you think that you
will only have time for classes and homework.
As a first year student, Marianne learned very quickly the application of time management. She thought that classes and
homework would consume the majority of her time. But she likes sports and really wanted to play university soccer. She
quickly realized that the course load would be impossible to manage unless she got involved in leisure activities she enjoys.
Phil, a fourth year student, believes that a student has to find equilibrium in his or her life and activities. Some people will
only be able to do one thing at the time. Classes and homework will consume most of their time. At the opposite end of the
spectrum if you get involved in too many things, your life as a student could start falling apart. Be the best you can be by
getting involved and trying something new to enrich your life during your post secondary education, but try to find your
personal perfect equilibrium.

Juggling Elements of Student Life
“Time management refers to a range of skills, tools, and techniques used to manage time when accomplishing specific
tasks, projects and goals” (Retrieved from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_management)
As a student you should learn the skills of time management. Those skills will help you to determine what is important to
attain your goals and will keep you realistic about how much time is required for each activity. You will also be able to
determine how many more activities you can take on beyond what is required for completing your studies and staying on
track with your responsibilities.
“A student's ability to manage time effectively is crucial in attempting to balance multiple responsibilities, (i.e. school, work,
leisure, and family obligations). Students need to be cautious about becoming overly committed if they can't devote the
necessary time to their studies” (University of Windsor).
