Bernard Jacobson Gallery BRAM BOGART 1921 Born Abraham van den Boogaart on July 12th, Delft, Netherlands Father Abraham van den Boogaart, a blacksmith, and mother Cornelia Stichter. He has an older brother named Geer. 1933 Registered at Technical School where he learns to be a house painter 1935 Undertakes a two year drawing course by correspondence 1936 Leaves Technical school and works as a house painter 1937 Begins work for advertising company, Leo Mineur in Rotterdam 1939 Bogart begins his career as a painter, showing his first works at Bennewitz. The 2nd World War commences 1940 Manages to escape “mandatory work” in Germany 1943 In order to furnish an acceptable excuse to the occupying army, Bogart registers at the Fine Arts Academy in The Hague 1944 Goes into hiding in Delft but continues to paint 1946 Hitch-hikes to Paris, he rents a “chamber de bonne” over the next few years he will move between France and Holland 1947 Falls ill and returns to Delft where he is hospitalised for several months, in the autumn he returns to France, this time staying in the south. 1948 Works with direct application of pure colour paint from the tubes and develops a system based on the autonomy of colours 1950 Moves to Le Cannet, where he experiments for the first time with mixtures of oil and water-based paints. He creates a series of paintings inspired by the buildings of Grimaldi—and other structures of the same period—by forcing himself into giving his canvases a cement and chalk aspect characteristic of these constructions. 1951 In January, he goes back to Delft, where the Lamvert Van Meerten Museum devotes an entire exhibition to him. April shows at the Bennewitz Gallery in The Hague. In May returns to Le Cannet. 1954 His oil-paint takes on a thickness, the colours become more sober. He paints numerous monochromes in white or in black. 1958 He meets Jean Dypréau and Serge Vandercam, which allows him to show his work for the first time in Brussels at the Carabin Gallery, and meets a compatriot, Abelina Sjoukje Vos, nicknamed Leni, born in Eindhoven 4 October 1936. 1959 Shows in Dusseldorf at J-P Wilhelm, goes to Brussels, to the rue du Méridien. Exhibits at the Palais des Beaux –Arts in Brussels. In the Autumn he goes to Rome where he produces a dozen canvases for the Attico Gallery. He is a regular at the Rosati café, where he meets numerous Italian artists and his compatriot, de Kooning. Like de Kooning who was eventually to become American, he is deeply hjostile to the cultural policy of the Dutch museums. Bernard Jacobson Gallery 1960 Bogart moves to rue du Méridien, Brussels. The painters, Van Anderlecht and Jef Verheijen introduce him to art dealer and collector, Han Liechti. Returns to Rome and works there until November when he goes back to Brussels, this time renting an apartment on the rue Bodenbroeck (Place du Grand Salon) 1961 He starts painting in his new workshop in March, this time the paintings are larger, the colours denser, brighter and the paint continues to thickenTakes part in a large exhibition, Forum 61, in Ghent. In Paris, the Halle-aux-cuirs building, home to so many artists, is destroyed. Amongst them, Bram Bogart was the one who had been there the longest. 1962 In February, he marries Abelina Sjouke Vos. He shows at Gérard Monjien’s Gallery, Le Zodiaque, in Brussels; his work, De Gelen (The Yellows), is purchased for the Musée National d’Art Moderne. 1963 He does a series of large, baptising himself as stemming from his “Bodenbroek Period”. After painting Bodenbroek 63, the final work of the series, he moves to Ohain, in Belgium’s Brabant Wallon Province. 1964 Birth of his daughter Cornelia, 15 January His 1963 work, Lokland, allows him to share the Guggenheim prize, awarded in New York. 1965 The thickness of his paintings lessens, and the signs of his early 1950s work reappear. He is awarded the 1963-4 Belgian Critics Prize in Charleroi. 1967 Birth of his daughter Inge, 5 January. 1969 Bogart acquires Belgian citizenship. He is awarded the Europa Prize for painting in Ostende. 1970 He takes part in the Venice Biennale. 1971 Birth of his son Bram, 5 April 1972 His work undergoes a profound change: the matter is not only appled far more directly and playfully, but actually begins to overflow the edges, giving his work their Baroque character 1973 At the Brussels Palais des Beaux-Arts, he shows his work produced over the five previous years 1974 Because of the recent thickening of the paint, he modifies the way his supports are consolidated, adopting metal stretchers, which in turn leads him to changing his mode of presenting his work. 1977 Exhibits in Bonn at Marianne Hennemann’s gallery; an accompanying monograph written by Manfred de la Motte is published. The book also includes the most important of the critical texts devoted to his work. 1978 A large retrospective of his work is shown in the Alexandra Monett Gallery in Brussels. 1981 The Veranneman Foundation organizes a retrospective (1950-81), which is shown at the Knokke Ca 1984 Retrospective (1950-78) at the Boymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam and at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent. The catalogue is written by Jan Hoet. Retrospective at the Prinsenhof Museum in Delft. Bernard Jacobson Gallery 1987 Wins the Jules Raeymaker Prize for colour, awarded by the Royal Academy of Belgium. A fire breaks out in his new studio during building works, fortunately very few works are destroyed. 1988 The Lannoo printers in Tielt publish a work entitled Bram Bogart ou la Fidelité, with a text written by Francine-Claire Legrand. 1989 David Hughes writes and publishes a catalogue, Bram Bogart – The Early Years 1951 – 1965 Paris-Rome-Bruxelles.
