Tokens are called ‘jetons’ in French. Payment by
jeton is dwindling, whereas payment by bank card
is increasing. Typically Service Points requiring
tokens, coins or credit cards dispense 10 minutes
or about 100 litres of drinking water. When
provided, electricity is normally available for one
hour. Tokens are normally available from local
commerce, especially boulangeries (bakers), bar
tabacs, tourist offices, the Mairie (town hall) and
campsites if adjacent. Tokens may be free, but
typically cost €2-€3. Information panels or signs
fixed to the Service Point normally indicate where
tokens are available.
Who turned out the lights?
The illumination symbol | is highlighted when the inspectors have seen light fittings. There is no guarantee
that lights work and it has become common practice to turn the lights off during the middle of the night
to save electricity.
Electricity
Approximately half of the Service Points in France provide electricity, but unlimited
(unmetered) electricity is uncommon at Aires. We have highlighted the electricity
symbol { for every Aire that has an electricity supply, regardless of cost or duration.
No further information is provided if the electricity supply is less than one hour.
Aires that offer unlimited or practical electricity supplies have the details written in
the further information of either the Service Point or the Parking.
Branded Service Points that charge for use, such as Aire Services or Euro Relais,
normally have one or two electricity points. 55-60 minutes of electricity and 100
litres or 10 minutes of water is distributed upon payment, typically charging €2-€3.
Flot Bleu Service Points normally provide 20
minutes of ‘environ’, access to water and

electricity. The least we have seen is 12
minutes supply. In addition, some brands produce electricity
distribution bollards. Flot Bleu electricity bollards normally provide four
hours of electricity per token and up to 12 hours of electricity can be
paid for in one go. Token costs differ from Aire to Aire.
The main types of token are:
The front of the Flot Bleu token is branded. It is the size
of a £1 coin, but not as thick.
The Aire Services 3/3 token is the same both sides with
3 grooves on each. It is the same size as a 10p piece.
Should you be lucky enough to stay at an Aire with free electricity, you
will be expected to share it with several motorhomes.

In recent years, there has been a growth in what we have named
‘commercial Aires’. These Aires often include electricity in their nightly
charge. Be aware that there may not be enough electricity points for
the number of motorhomes staying. Approximately half the plug
sockets we have tested have reverse polarity and an alarming amount
had no earth. Our recommendation is if you must have electricity, then
you should book into a campsite.
The front of the Euro Relais (ER) token is branded. It is
slightly bigger than a 10p piece.

French motorway service and rest areas often allocate parking with car and caravan signs. The parking areas may look nice, however motorhomes,
caravans, trucks and vans are frequently broken into at motorway rest areas. Often the occupants are asleep during the burglary; surely a situation
you would not want to be in. The following motorway service areas all have a motorhome/coach Service Point. We have observed that they are
often broken, full of rubbish or obstructed by parked trucks. Vicarious Books recommends that you never park overnight at motorway services and
rest areas and maintain vigilance at all times when using them.

Operation evasion
Over the past ten years there has been a rapid increase in the number of motorhomes on French roads,
and 95 per cent of them are local camping cars. We have observed that, like birds of a feather,
motorhomers flock together. For example, French motorhomers rarely venture off the main trunking routes.
Consequently, overcrowding can occur at any Aire which is a short distance from a main road and is likely
at those that are also in a quiet or pleasant location. Motorhomers from all nations appear compelled to
drive to the coast and the sheer number of motorhomes has forced coastal authorities to put measures
in place to manage parking. Motorhome parking is often controlled at well-known tourist attractions,
lakes, rivers and canals. With control comes cost, so expect to pay if you want to stopover in popular
areas. Freedom seekers should plan to end their day off the beaten track. We recommend that you travel
with regional guidebooks, such as the Michelin green guides, in order to make the most of your visits to
the lesser-known tourist attractions and villages.

Offsite parking
Some of the Aires in this guide are Service Points only without any parking. These are provided so that
motorhomers can discharge waste responsibly. Motorhoming changed in France during 2012; this was
not due to a change in the law but a change in attitude. As explained above, French law permits offsite
parking and French motorhomers embraced this freedom. However, we have noticed that most French
motorhomers were parking overnight at official places. Presumably they realised that because they
congregate en masse they were spoiling it for themselves. We believe that you should continue to enjoy
offsite parking, but make sure you are away from the popular motorhome destinations.

Vicarious Media champions responsible tourism
Motorhoming is booming in France and more than 300 new Aires have opened in the past two years.
Some act as control measures, but many more were paid for by the local community in the hope that extra
tourism would help to keep the local shops, restaurants or fuel stations open. Over the past ten years
motorhomes have become much bigger, typically occupying 50 per cent more space. Bear this in mind
when you park during siesta in a sleepy town square or in an empty Aire, because you are unlikely to
remain alone. When parking somewhere for free you should at least try to spend what you are saving in
camping fees. We would all like to see the Aires network continue to grow and this will happen if
motorhomers are perceived as valuable visitors.

French motorway service and rest areas often allocate parking with car and caravan signs. The parking areas may look nice, however motorhomes,
caravans, trucks and vans are frequently broken into at motorway rest areas. Often the occupants are asleep during the burglary; surely a situation
you would not want to be in. The following motorway service areas all have a motorhome/coach Service Point. We have observed that they are
often broken, full of rubbish or obstructed by parked trucks. Vicarious Media recommends that you never park overnight at motorway services and
rest areas and maintain vigilance at all times when using them.
