STATEMENT Lionel Bayol-Themines is a visual artist who lives and works in Paris, France. He’s been a permanent resident of the National Foundation for Graphic and Plastic Arts (FNAGP) in Paris, since 2004. He was invited as “guest of honor“ for the « Price Voies Off » Rencontres d’Arles in 2009. His work is regularly presented in national and international exhibitions, fairs and galleries and is the subject of regular publications, lately FOAM magazine (on Earth No. 44) of the Amsterdam museum has published a portfolio of recent work next to the presentation of Marcel Feil. Inspired by the philosopher Vilém Flusser - who has questioned the history of images and their creation process - as well as by some artists - such as Joan Fontcuberta - who have worked on the assumed truth of photography, its ability to represent reality, to give evidence or manipulate History, Lionel Bayol-Themines is developing a visual universe in which two worlds - or rather two spaces - one real, the other virtual - coexist in a symbiotic relationship. While for a long time photography was seen as a way for nature to represent herself *, today, the evolution of digital technologies allows the creation of unprecedented images that question this new space of representation that is the virtual world, this new code generated by man. Reality captured by digital cameras can be modified at will by algorithms, such as the Photoshop software, that allows you to «reveal» digitally the images. This is how only from single shots carried out on existing sites, Lionel bayol-Themines produces singular images: in the course of the creation process, some fragments of the original images are «revealed» through a variety of 3D tools before being assembled to the photograph they were extracted from. By revealing those weird landscapes, the artist questions the making of images and the ability of digital photography to generate other «realities». * see Joan Fontcuberta, Le baiser de Judas, éd. Actes Sud, 2005, p.20. André Rouillé This is not a photographer. Paris Art, 12 juin 2013 (…) The composite and (by computer) mixed nature of the works by Lionel Bayol-Themines separates them from photography, of which they make literally burst the poetry and the regime of truth. (...) The works of Lionel Bayol-Themines, like those of artists who are at the crossroads of the world of photography, of contemporary or digital art, are not less real than the most famous photojournalism prints. The one and the other are just true differently. They refer to antagonist truth regimes. While the documentary shots based on the belief that the truth can be collected and captured by contact and by recording at the surface of appearances, photographic works from visual artists are the result of an open constructivist approach in which photography is a plastic material selected for its ability to record - and, as a material, promised to unlimited assemblages, mixes and plastic actions. Photographic truth is statable, visual and affirmative unlike the plastic truth, which is more processural, discursive, problematic and sensitive. Lionel Bayol-Themines is not representing something, he expresses plastically anthropological, cultural and language phenomena, that go beyond the order of things and the visible. (...) The work of Lionel Bayol-Themines is fully contemporary in so far as it resonates with the current state of a world that has become elusive in a single way, and impossible to be totalized. A world in which different times, speeds and spaces are juxtaposed, and where one of the creation challenge is to forge paths amidst chaos ...
