Talk about good coffee! Miss Muggins Coffee and Fresh Donuts CHAPLEAU EXPRESS CHAPLEAU EXPRESS PIZZA HUT & KFC There’s a Reason We’re Number 1 “0 TRANS FAT” 864-0911 Vol. 13, Issue 30, April 11, 2009 Warm welcome home for local figure skater By staff O n Tu e s d a y, April 7, 2009, friends and family were on hand to greet Alicia Canning on her return home from participating in the 2009 HomeSense National STARSkate Championships which were held in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The championships hosted approximately 100 skaters. Miss Canning competed in the Wo m e n ' s S i l v e r Triathlon and placed a very respectable 6th place, only 10.99 points from the first position. She had to compete in three disciplines comprising of creative skating skill, interpretive and free skating. Pride in this young lady's accomplishments was evident Tuesday evening as friends and family gathered in front of the Chapleau Auto Parts store to await her O.P.P. escorted arrival displaying a "Congrats Alicia" banner. A surprise reception, o rg a n i z e d b y t h e Chapleau Figure Skating Club, was held afterward in the Moore Arena lobby along with a pot luck supper. Chapleau Figure Skating Club members along with their parents and friends gathered to pay tribute to Alicia presenting her with flowers and showering her with congratulatory remarks. To acknowledge her achievements, Mayor Freeborn and Mrs. Freeborn, on behalf of the Township of Chapleau, presented Alicia with a commemorative plaque and a bouquet of flowers. Emotions were high as Alicia thanked everyone for their support and was relieved when her father came to the microphone to add his thanks to the Chapleau Figure Skating Club and the community of Chapleau for the unbelievable support that they have received throughout the years. Chapleau should be very proud of their local figure skaters. Dreams can be achieved with hard work and support from caring parents. Congratulations are in order to Alicia Canning for her hard work and achievements and to the Chapleau Figure Skating Club and Anne Morin for organizing such a memorable occasion. Alicia is the daughter of Marshall and Debbie Canning of Chapleau. Ducks Unlimited Canada recognizes Chapleau artist C hapleau nature a r t i s t Vi k k i Meyer has been awarded the title of Ducks Unlimited Canada's (DUC) Mississippi Flyway Sponsor Print Artist for her painting, Water Babies. The print is part of DUC's national sponsor recognition initiative that includes three other selected paintings from artists across the country. “I'm proud to be a part of DUC's art collection,” says Meyer. “I believe in the work DUC does to conserve Canada's wetland areas and am thrilled my work can play a role in achieving its conservation goals.” DUC's national sponsor recognition initiative will play an important role in its 2009 fundraising efforts. Supporters who make a significant financial contribution to DUC have the opportunity to receive Meyer's print, or a print by one of the three other chosen Flyway artists, as recognition for their commitment to wetland conservation. Uniting people's passions for conser-vation and art, this initiative is making a real difference in the fight to stop wetland loss. “ D u c k s Unlimited Canada is privileged to have the support of talented a r t i s t s l i k e Vi k k i Meyer who donate their work to support the wetland conservation cause," says Penny Burns, DUC's national art coordinator. "Their creativity and generosity generate lots of excitement in our fundraising activities and help us raise muchneeded dollars to save natural wetland habitat." Meyer is a strong supporter of DUC and an advocate for wetland conservation. She encourages everyone to do their part to help conserve these natural areas so future generations can experience it firsthand. For information on Meyer's work and DUC's national sponsor recognition initiative, visit www.ducks.ca/spon sor. For over 25 years, DUC has worked with some of Canada's foremost nature and wildlife artists to raise the funds needed to conserve our vanishing wetlands. Magazines lure you with their headline promises of guaranteed weight loss if you follow the latest eating (diet) discovery in that particular issue; newspaper journalists then offer research which may contradict the claims of the latest diet information, and revealing that it may actually be harmful to our health. All of this can leave us in a state of confusion – what should I be eating as part of a healthy diet? For clarification on this subject, join us on April 22 from 12 noon to 1:00 Moments from the past: Hospital Auxilliary MISTER 1986 —Christopher James Graham and his mother Deborah pose for a Sentinel photo in the Chapleau General Hospital shortly after Christopher's claim to the New Year's Baby title. Crossworks Manufac-turing, part of the HRA-SunDiamond Group, who qualified for a supply contract with De Beers’ D i a m o n d Tr a d i n g Company (DTC), will cut and polish an estimated $25-million worth of rough stones a year at a new northern facility. Once completed later this year, the facility will employ about 50 people in special skilled diamond cutting trades, as well as administrative and maintenance positions. The rough stones will come from the De Beers Canada Victor Mine, located 90 kilometres west of Attawapiskat First Nation, in the James Bay Lowlands. Under an agreement with the Ontario government, De Beers Canada, through the De Beers global sales and distribution arm, the DTC, is making 10 per cent of its annual rough diamond production from the Victor mine, by value, available for cutting and polishing activities in Ontario. “The establishment of our factory is a great beginning for us in Ontario and will put Greater Sudbury on the global diamond map. As a Canadian c o m p a n y, w e a r e excited about the possibilities that this offers the jewellery industry, the City of Greater Sudbury, the Province of Ontario and Canada.”said Uri Ariel, President, Crossworks Manufacturing Ltd. “This exciting initiative will provide new avenues of employment and expertise as well as further advance Greater Sudbury’s reputation as a centre of mineral excellence.”said Rick Bartolucci, MPP for Sudbury. With winter lingering and Easter coming, many Chapleauites seized the opportunity to buy fresh daffodil bouquets from Canadian Cancer volunteers during Daffodil Days last week. Demand for these sunny Flowers of Hope was so brisk that by the early afternoon of Friday, some 5000 flowers had been purchased locally! Over the years, the local Daffodil Campaign committee formed partnerships with 25 local busines- ses, where employees pre-order their bouquets; these were delivered to these locations on Thursday. This year, we are grateful for 4 new partnerships, initiated with the Fox Lake Administration, École Secondaire Catholique Volunteering for the Canadian Cancer Society is an excellent way to honour the memory of someone you have lost to cancer. Our apologies to all those who were disappointed at not being able to purchase daffodils this year. There is no doubt that we will endeavour to obtain more flowers for next year’s event. Pictured above is the small army of volunteers from the Students’ Council of Chapleau High School, who became partners with the local branch of the Canadian Cancer Society for Daffodil Days last week. The students pre-sold daffodils to their classmates, families and friends. They were hugely successful in their efforts: almost 20% of all daffodils purchased in Chapleau were sold by these students!
