Call for participation
To meet the needs of young children with severe and multiple disabilities represents a great
challenge both for families and for professionals. The first step is certainly to ensure the
acceptable viability of the newborn and meet their medical care and therapeutic needs. What
is the reality of the complex situations medical staff has to cope with and what is the evolution
of those situations. A second challenge is to achieve an efficient collaboration between
parents and various professionals in order to prevent as far as possible the worsening of the
child’s health (pain, gastric reflux, deformation of the locomotor system, ..) as well as
difficulties for feeding, sleeping,and s.o. The third challenge is to welcome the child in home
with adequate material and adaptations, adequate support for the parents and for the siblings.
After this period of very intense care, it is time for education. What are our knowledge about
the development of children with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD) ?
How to conceive an holistic approach allowing parents and professionals to share their
expertise and to start with a program of an inclusive education? Early intervention services
have a crucial role to play in order to ensure the best quality of life for the child and for the
family. Further what could be the role of nursery and schools in order to promote all aspects
of the development ? Finally to welcome children with PIMD leads us to cope with ethical
issues.
Researchers and practioners have accepted to share their knowledge by chairing a
conference or by presenting a workshop.
We are expecting that parents and professionals dealing with young children with PIMD are
able to join this Conference. Il will be also the opportunity to better know the work achieved
by the European Association for Early Childhood Intervention-Eurlyaid to promote early
intervention in each European country.

avec le support de UNAPEI, APF, CESAP et ANECAMSP

Argumentaire :
Rencontrer les besoins spécifiques des jeunes enfants présentant des déficiences sévères et
multiples représente tant pour les familles que pour les professionnels, un défi majeur. La première
étape est certainement de s’assurer de la viabilité du nouveau-né et de répondre aux urgences
médicales et thérapeutiques. Quelle est la réalité actuelle des situations complexes auxquelles le
corps médical doit faire face et quelle est l’évolution probable de ces situations ? Un second défi est
d’établir une collaboration efficiente entre parents et professionnels divers afin de prévenir autant
que possible l’aggravation de la santé de l’enfant (douleurs, reflux gastriques, déformations de
l’appareil locomoteur,..) ainsi que les difficultés liées à l’alimentation , au sommeil ,etc.). Le troisième
défi est d’accueillir l’enfant à la maison avec du matériel et des adaptations adéquats et en offrant
aux parents et à la fratrie l’aide dont ils ont besoin.
Après cette période de préoccupations liées aux soins, le moment est venu de penser à l’éducation
de l’enfant. Quelles sont nos connaissances aujourd’hui à propos du développement de l’enfant avec
des déficiences sévères et multiples ? Comment concevoir une approche globale permettant aux
parents et aux professionnels de partager leur expertise et s’engager dans un programme
d’éducation inclusive ? Les services d’intervention précoce ont un rôle fondamental à jouer pour
assurer la meilleure qualité de vie possible à l’enfant et à sa famille. De plus quel peut être le rôle de
crèches et d’écoles pour contribuer à tous les aspects du développement de l’enfant ? Enfin,
accueillir un enfant avec déficiences sévères et multiples nous conduit à réfléchir à divers aspects
éthiques.

Des chercheurs et des professionnels de divers pays européens ont accepté de partager leurs
connaissances en présentant une conférence ou en animant un atelier pratique.
Nous espérons que parents et professionnels confrontés à ces situations complexes de handicap
viendront nous rejoindre à cette Conférence. Ce sera également l’occasion de faire mieux connaître
le travail mené par l’association européenne pour l’intervention précoce auprès de jeunes enfants –
Eurlyaid pour promouvoir l’intervention précoce dans chaque pays européen.
