Ashley Paniyuk-Dean
Professional, Go-getter, Ambitious
With dreams of becoming an Inuktitut language teacher, Ashley
Paniyuk-Dean is currently enrolled in the Nunavut Teacher Education
Program. While attending college in Iqaluit, Ashley is working parttime as a hairstylist.
Ashley, 22, has many personal accomplishments. In 2000, she
participated in the “Racism-Stop It” youth conference in Germany. She
received the Prince of Wales scholarship for outstanding contribution
to her community. She completed the Nunavut Sivuniksavut Training
Program, a college preparation course for Inuit students. Honouring
her Inuit culture, Ashley has learned the art of throat singing and kamik
making.
In 2004, Ashley was crowned Miss Nunavut and became the first Inuk
to compete in Miss World Canada pageant. There, she was awarded
Miss Heart and Soul. Ashley’s family and the people of Nunavut are
her encouragement and support. “Don’t give up so easily on learning
or passing on your language and culture. It’s up to you to keep it
strong.”

Portée par son rêve d’enseigner l’inuktitut, Ashley Paniyuk-Dean est
actuellement inscrite au programme de formation des enseignants, au
Nunavut. Pendant ses études collégiales à Iqaluit, elle travaille à temps
partiel comme coiffeuse styliste.
À 22 ans, Ashley a de nombreuses réussites personnelles à son
actif. En 2000, elle s’est rendue en Allemagne pour participer à la
conférence pour les jeunes intitulée « Racism-Stop It ». Elle a reçu la
bourse d’études Prince-de-Galles pour contribution exemplaire à sa
collectivité, et elle a terminé avec succès le programme de formation
Sivuniksavut qui, au Nunavut, prépare les étudiants inuits à des études
collégiales. Fière de sa culture inuite, Ashley a appris à maîtriser le
chant guttural et à fabriquer des kamiks.
En 2004, Ashley a été couronnée Miss Nunavut, et elle est devenue la
première Inuite à participer au concours Miss Monde Canada. Elle y a
décroché un prix pour ses qualités d’âme et de cœur. La famille d’Ashley
et les résidants du Nunavut sont ses sources d’encouragement et d’appui.
