Zenon Park Community Wellness Assessment March 2010
ZENON PARK COMMUNITY WELLNESS SURVEY The purpose of the Zenon Park Primary Health Care survey was to determine what the residents of Zenon Park identified as possible needs in relation to the delivery of potential health information. The survey was mailed to all households of Zenon Park which totalled 139. The survey was sent in a French and an English version creating the potential for each household to send back 2 surveys. However, that disadvantage was outweighed by the fact that the community is French based and that many residents value French delivered information. Survey Results 48 out of 139 households responded to the survey for a 34.5% response rate. It is important to note that 6 households returned two surveys (one English version and one French version) for a total of 54 surveys received. All 54 surveys were used in the survey analysis. Age Demographics The survey asked respondents to give their age category and the chart below illustrates the results. The highest response rate was from those persons aged between 50 and 59 (22.22%); followed equally by age range 40 - 49 (16.67%) and age 70 - 79 (16.67%). Gender Demographics The following chart indicates the gender demographics of the respondents. The survey indicated that females (62.38%) were more likely than males (25.93%) to fill out the survey. 3.70 % did not indicate a gender while 7.41% check both boxes on the survey possibly indicating that a couple filled out the survey together and marked both boxes. Language The following chart indicates the number of surveys sent back in English (76.92%) as compared to French (26.92%) . Potential Health information needs Please refer to the chart on the next page for a visual understanding of the results of this survey. Top ten identified topics of health information 1. Heart health (53.70%) 2. Walking program (44.44%) 3. Weight loss group (37.04%) 4. Stroke prevention (37.04%) 5. Men’s health information (35.19%) 6. Women’s health information (33.33%) 7. Seniors wellness information (29.63%) 8. Sleep apnea (24.07%) 9. Alternative health practices (24.07%) 10. Depression information (24.07%) Healthy Living Programs 40.74% of respondents indicated interest in the Lifestyle Balance Program 33.33% of respondents indicated interest in the Living with Chronic Conditions Program Preferred time for potential informational sessions 7.41% of respondents indicated morning as a preferential time 33.33% of respondents indicated afternoons as a preferential time 46.30% of respondents indicated evenings as a preferential time Discussion With a near 35% response rate for this survey it is evident that residents of Zenon Park are interested in health related information. There was a good variation in the age of the respondents with women more likely than men filling out the survey. However, it is important to note that the interest in men’s health information (35.19%) was nearly equal to the interest in women’s health information (33.33%) which may indicate that men are equally concerned about obtaining information specific to their gender. Heart health information had the highest interest at 53.70% followed by the establishment of a walking group (44.44%). Formation of a weight loss group and stroke prevention were third at 37.04% respectively. These top three health concerns are in some respects related to each other, hence a program that incorporates information related to all of these concerns would be ideal. The Lifestyle Balance Program would be a great starting point to deliver this information. With 40.74% of respondents interested in this program a good number of participants could be expected to attend if one should be offered in the community of Zenon Park. The Living Well With Chronic Conditions Program also had a high interest at 33.33% and could also be considered for this community. Gender related health information and senior wellness information were also in the top ten results. Information on these topics could be offered through group meetings scheduled in the evenings for those working during daytime hours. Senior wellness information may be offered in the daytime at a common meeting place for seniors. The community is currently in the process of setting up a community run gym facility in the cultural building (AFZP) which will include a treadmill and other exercise equipment. This facility will be a good place to provide pamphlets and other literature on healthy living including topics discussed in this survey. Currently seniors exercises are done on a weekly basis and this time can also be used to provide senior wellness information. Overall, this survey has given some valuable insight into the health needs of Zenon Park, as viewed by its community members. The information obtained will help direct resources to where they will be most utilized and provide the most benefit to the residents of the community.
