SYNOPSIS
Teenager Adam is spending his summer vacation with his parents on rugged Lake Superior. His dull
routine is shattered when he befriends Riley and Nate, smart aleck cousins who pass their ample free
time with debauchery and reckless cliff jumping. The revelation of a hurtful secret triggers Adam to set
in motion a series of irreversible events that test the bonds of friendship and change the boys forever.

SLEEPING GIANT is the feature film directorial debut of Andrew Cividino, produced by Film Forge Inc. in
association with Hawkeye Pictures Inc.
The film deals extensively with themes of death, masculinity, as well as adolescent perceptions of love,
friendship and sexuality. “I want to make a film that is unabashedly a love letter to what may well be the last generation to be able
to grow up free from the chains of cell phones and high speed internet.” Writer/Director, Andrew Cividino
Set on the shore of Lake Superior, the third largest freshwater lake in the world which is shared by
Canada and the US, SLEEPING GIANT follows these young boys rambling around a vastly uninhabited,
unforgiving landscape. As far as the eye can see is an iconic land mass called the Sleeping Giant, (which
resembles a giant lying on its back, with cliffs as high as 250 metres).
In Cividino’s short film Sleeping Giant, produced one year before the feature, the character of Adam
is a shy and meek young man who finds his own strength to push back after being bullied by the local
boys. The title speaks to not only Adam’s newfound resilience, but to that character-defining strength
all the boys stumble upon in the film.
The stars Nick Serino and Reece Moffett are discoveries of the purest kind. Cividino met them at an
open casting call in Thunder Bay. They had never acted before. Ever. Cividino imposed an intense
collaborative process with these actors involving in-depth character workshops.
DIRECTOR BIO
Raised in Dundas, Ontario, Andrew Cividino spent summers on the north shore of Lake Superior where
his mother grew up and where SLEEPING GIANT is set. Andrew went to film school at Ryerson University’s School of Image Arts. His first short We Ate the Children Last, adapted from a short story by Yann
Martel, screened at film festivals on six continents and secured theatrical exhibition on sixty screens in
France, along with international sales to Canal+ and Canal+ Spain. Cividino went on to direct Sarah
Gadon in the short Yellow Fish, which screened at Telefilm’s Not Short on Talent showcase at Cannes in
2013. Most recently, Andrew directed the short film Sleeping Giant, which premiered at Locarno, where
it won the Youth Jury Prize in the Pardi di domani section, and went on to screen at TIFF 2014 and AFI
2014 and was nominated for a 2015 Canadian Screen Award (Live Action Short Drama) as well as
making the 2015 Canada’s Top Ten list.

SYNOPSIS
Le jeune Adam passe ses vacances d’été avec ses parents sur les rives accidentées du lac Supérieur.
Sa morne routine vole en éclats lorsqu’il se lie d’amitié avec Riley et Nate, deux cousins impertinents
qui partagent leur temps libre entre débauche et sauts téméraires du haut des falaises. La révélation
d’un douloureux secret pousse Adam à provoquer une série d’événements irréversibles qui mettront à
l’épreuve les liens d’amitié entre les trois adolescents et qui les changeront définitivement.

Se déroulant sur les rives du lac Supérieur, troisième plus grand lac d’eau douce dans le monde et situé
à cheval sur le Canada et les États Unis, SLEEPING GIANT suit ces jeunes garçons dans leurs randonnées
à travers ce vaste territoire inhabité et impitoyable. À perte de vue s’étend une formation géologique
légendaire appelée Sleeping Giant (le Géant Endormi), qui ressemble à un géant couché sur le dos avec
des falaises pouvant atteindre une hauteur de 250 mètres.
Dans le court métrage de Cividino, Sleeping Giant, produit un an avant le long métrage, Adam est un
jeune homme timide et doux qui trouve la force de riposter après avoir été persécuté par les garçons de
l’endroit. Le titre n’évoque pas seulement la résilience nouvellement trouvée d’Adam, mais également
cette force de caractère dont tous les garçons vont faire preuve tout au long du film.
Les vedettes Nick Serino et Reece Moffett sont de véritables découvertes. En effet, Andrew Cividino
a fait leur connaissance à l’occasion d’un appel à casting à Thunder Bay. Ils n’avaient jamais joué
auparavant. Vraiment jamais. Cividino a donc imposé un intense processus de collaboration avec ces
acteurs impliquant des ateliers approfondis sur les personnages.
BIOGRAPHIE DU RÉALISATEUR
Élevé à Dundas, en Ontario, Andrew Cividino a passé les étés de son enfance sur la rive nord du lac
Supérieur où sa mère a grandi et qui sert de cadre au film SLEEPING GIANT. Andrew a fréquenté la Ryerson University School of Image Arts. Son premier court métrage We Ate the Children Last, adapté d’une
nouvelle de Yann Martel, a été projeté dans des festivals de cinéma sur six continents et s’est assuré une
sortie en salle sur soixante écrans en France. Au plan international, il a été vendu à Canal+ et Canal+
Espagne. Par la suite, Cividino a dirigé Sarah Gadon dans le court métrage Yellow Fish, projeté à Cannes
en 2013 dans le cadre de Talent tout Court de Téléfilm Canada. Plus récemment, Andrew a réalisé le
court métrage Sleeping Giant, qui a été présenté en première mondiale au Festival international du film
de Locarno en 2014 où il a remporté le prix du Jury des Jeunes dans la section Pardi di domani. Il a
été projeté au TIFF 2014 et à l’AFI 2014. Il a été nominé pour un des Prix Écrans Canadiens en 2015
(catégorie Meilleur Court Métrage Dramatique). Enfin il est sur la liste des dix meilleurs courts métrages
canadiens de 2015.
