Fuel Costs
In response to concerns expressed by school boards and other stakeholders over the
financial pressures caused by the increasing cost of fuel in student transportation
operations in 2007-08, the ministry is providing a total of $10.5 million in assistance to
boards. As a result of this one-time grant, each board will receive 1.35 per cent of its
2007-08 net transportation expenditure excluding transportation to Provincial Schools.
Table 1, attached, contains board-by-board allocations. Information on future cost
benchmark updates will be provided through the 2008-09 Grants for Student Needs.
It is the government’s intention that this grant be used to address the current high fuel
price for student transportation. The ministry recognizes that some boards have fuel
escalator clauses in their school bus contracts. It is also expected that boards will
provide the appropriate payments to their school bus operators in areas where
operators have borne these increased costs without additional compensation.
The ministry expects boards to flow additional funding appropriately to operators
before March 31st 2008.
