The January 27 meeting was very well
attended, with three new guests and juniors. In
club news, President Steve Woodland
presented some nice Mint products as gifts to
prize-winning members who were not in
attendance at the Christmas party. Wilf Lauber
presented the financial report for the 2013
calendar year; the report was accepted by vote
of the membership. Wilf also noted that
membership renewals for the 2014 year are
now due.
La rencontre du 27 janvier a été très bien
fréquentée, avec trois invités et des juniors. Le
président, Steve Woodland, a présenté des
belles pièces de la MRC comme cadeaux aux
membres primés qui n'étaient pas présents lors
du dîner de Noël. Wilf Lauber a présenté le
rapport financier pour l'année civile 2013, le
rapport a été accepté par un vote des
membres. Il a également noté que les
renouvellements d'adhésion de 2014 sont dus.
Steve Woodland introduced the new
Executive team for 2014 (see listing page 2).
David Bergeron has accepted the role of editor
of the Society’s newsletter, The Journal|Le
Journal. The newsletter will take on a new
format, incorporate new content, and will be
issued six times a year (bimonthly). The club
also has a new webmaster, Mark Dennis, who
expects to have a newly redesigned site for the
ONS ready in a couple of months. Kim Zbitnew
will take on the tasks of Greeter and Prizes
Coordinator. Rod MacDonald also volunteered
to lead the monthly Silent Auctions.
Martin McCurdy gave an excellent
presentation on nickel coinage, passing around
examples from his own collection for members
to view. Martin’s talk discussed the discovery of
nickel, its first use as a metal for coinage, the
minting of pure nickel coins, and the gradual
disappearance of pure-nickel coinage from
circulation.

Journal. Le bulletin va prendre un nouveau

a un nouveau webmestre, Mark Dennis, qui
s'attend à avoir un site nouvellement redessiné
prêt dans quelques mois. Kim Zbitnew prendra

pour diriger les ventes aux enchères
silencieuses mensuelles.
Martin McCurdy a donné une excellente
présentation sur les monnaies faites de nickel,
circulant parmi les membres des exemplaires
de sa propre collection. Martin a discuté de la
découverte du nickel, de sa première utilisation
comme métal pour fabriquer des pièces de
monnaie, la frappe de pièces de nickel pur, et la
disparition de la monnaie en nickel pur de la
circulation.

A Word from the President
Happy 2014 to all our readers! I hope
the New Year brings you good health,
happiness and prosperity. In
numismatic terms, may your year be
filled with exploration, learning and
discovery.
This issue marks the return of David
Bergeron as editor of our society’s
official publication. After a four-year
absence, David has graciously agreed
to come back and lead our editorial
team. You will undoubtedly notice
many changes: the name change to
The Journal/Le Journal, a reduced
number of pages, and a significant shift
in content. While each issue will
feature fewer articles, we have added
sections for a Meeting Summary, a
Calendar of Events and for Numismatic
News. We will also publish fewer
issues each year, approximately one
every two months.
These adjustments reflect a desire by
ONS members to return to a more
intimate club newsletter and the
reality that the volunteer editorial
team can no longer sustain a 10-issuesper-year magazine like moneta. This
was a difficult decision for your
Executive, but a necessary one. As
your President, I hope you will
understand and support our choice.
Should you have any comments or
thoughts, do not hesitate to contact

speak to me at a club meeting.

J'espère que la nouvelle année vous

Ce numéro marque le retour de David
Bergeron comme rédacteur en chef de la
publication officielle de notre société.
Après une absence de quatre ans, David a
gracieusement accepté de retourner et de
mener notre équipe éditoriale. Vous aurez
sans doute remarqué de nombreux
changements : le changement de nom à
The Journal/Le Journal, un nombre réduit
de pages, et un changement important
dans le contenu. Bien que chaque numéro
comporte moins d'articles, nous avons
ajouté des sections pour un compte-rendu
des rencontres, un calendrier d’activités et
des nouvelles numismatiques. Aussi, nous
publierons moins de numéros chaque
année, environ tous les deux mois.
Ces ajustements reflètent le désir des
membres de la SNO de revenir à un

From the Editor
Le mot du Rédacteur en chef
The last time I edited a journal, the club
was still called the COCC (City of
Ottawa Coin Club). That was back in
2009! How time flies… Now in 2014, I
have been asked to assume the editor’s
role once again, which I accepted with
some reservation at first; the reason
being that I wasn’t sure how on earth I
was going to fill Serge Pelletier’s shoes
and maintain the high standards
achieved with moneta. It was made
clear to me that the Club did not expect
such lofty goals from the new editor.
And so with the understanding that the
next version would be a simpler,
scaled-down version, I gladly and
humbly accepted the job. Now I say a
more simple version… But that doesn’t
mean that the new publication will be
any less informative or entertaining.
With a great team of authors and
contributors within our membership
(many of whom I have had the pleasure
to work with back in the days of the
COCC Journal), the new publication,
now called The Journal/Le Journal, will
continue to deliver the goods that have
made our work the measure of all
other coin club publications in Canada.
So with that I present to you the first
issue featuring contributions from Chris
LaSalle and Steve Woodland. If you
have any comments or questions about
the new look of the publication, then

Voilà la première fois que je me trouve à
rédiger une lettre en français en tant que
rédacteur en chef. Quand j’étais
rédacteur en chef du journal de la COCC
(City of Ottawa Coin Club) avant 2010, le
contenu de la publication était
exclusivement en anglais. Sous la guise
d’un nouveau nom, la Société
numismatique d’Ottawa, la société se
lança le défi de publier un journal qui
serait entièrement bilingue. C’est grâce à
l’effort de Serge Pelletier et son équipe
que moneta, la publication officielle de la
Société numismatique d’Ottawa, a connu
un vif succès et qu’elle remporta
plusieurs prix. J’ai eu le plaisir de voir
publier dans moneta certains de mes
articles, dont j’en suis très fier.
Maintenant, c’est mon tour de reprendre
les rênes de rédacteur en chef, mais le
défi de continuer le merveilleux travail de
Serge me semble inatteignable. C’est
pourquoi, selon la volonté du conseil
d’administration de la SNO, j’ai le plaisir
de vous présenter une nouvelle
publication qui sera plus simple, plus
sobre dans sa présentation, mais qui
demeurera, je l’espère du moins, aussi
intéressante et divertissante que la
monumentale moneta. Avec le soutien et
la forte contribution de nos membres, je
n’ai pas d’inquiétude! Intitulé tout
simplement, Le Journal, le premier

The new 2014 Lucky Loonie circulation coin was
unveiled on Saturday, January 11th at the Canadian
Olympic Committee's Sochi Block Party event. Steve
Podborski, Sochi 2014 Chef de Mission for Canada and
Jean-Luc Brassard, Assistant Chef de Mission for Canada
were in attendance at the event. Also announced was
the silver proof collector Lucky Loonie.
La nouvelle pièce de circulation de 1 dollar millésimée
2014 a été dévoilé le samedi 11 janvier à l'événement
Sotchi Block Party du Comité olympique canadien. Steve
Podborski, chef de mission pour le Canada et Jean-Luc
Brassard, chef de mission adjoint, étaient présents lors
de l'événement. Aussi annoncée : la pièce épreuve en
argent pour les collectionneurs.

Well, it looks like the Royal Canadian Mint is off to
a good start with its first wave of new collector
coins for 2014. Already they are up to 50 items,
including the 2014 Proof set with the selective gold
plating dollar celebrating the centennial of the
Declaration of the First World War, the last coin in
the $300 gold provincial crests series, the latest
$20-for-$20, the 2014 Specimen set with the
Ferruginous Hawk on the dollar, the 2014 O
Canada series, various gift and collector sets, and

The SMS Emden was a light cruiser of the Imperial German Navy during the First World War. From the outbreak of the war,
the Emden raided the shipping lanes of the Indian Ocean operating in the area from the Dutch East Indies to Ceylon. As
Britannia no longer ruled the sea, the Indian Ocean had ceased to be “a British Lake”

THE SMS EMDEN
The German Naval Raider of the Indian Ocean during the First World War

The German naval ship SMS Emden, built in the
Danzig shipyards, was launched in 1908. This light
cruiser was commissioned into the Imperial
German Navy on July 10th, 1909. A year later, the
Emden was assigned to Germany's Chinese
colony, Kiautschou, and stationed at the city of
Tsingtao as part of the East Asian Station. In the
Far East, she was known as the "Swan of the East"
because of her graceful ship lines.
The Emden was tested under fire in the
German colony of the Caroline Islands, helping
German authorities and forces to suppress the
natives during the Sokehs Rebellion from 1910 to
1911. Later in August 1913, during the Second
Chinese Revolution, the Emden, along with other
British and Japanese warships, sailed up into the
Yangtze River to help put down the revolution.
Together, they bombarded a rebel fort into
submission.
When World War I broke out, the German
East Asian fleet departed China – knowing that
their Chinese colony would not last long – and set
sail for Europe via the Magellan Strait at the tip of
South America. The Emden, however, stayed
behind to conduct naval operations in the Indian
Ocean. During her epic three-month voyage, she
was able to sink or capture some 30 vessels and
naval warships, wreaking havoc on the merchant
fleet and conducting naval bombardment of the
oil storage tanks in Madras.
The SMS Emden met her fate on
November 9th at the hands of the Australian light
cruiser, HMAS Sydney, during the Battle of Cocos,
one of the first naval battles of the First World
War. Commander von Muller sent an armed party
onto Direction Island in the Cocos to destroy the
Allied transmitting station there. A passing convoy
from Australia received a signal before its
destruction and the HMAS Sydney was sent to
investigate. Both ships spotted each other at
9:15 am, and prepared for combat. The Emden
had to leave behind the armed party on the
island, having no time to recover them. The
Emden fired first with her longer ranging guns,
while the more powerful HMAS Sydney closed in
quickly to avoid damage and started to engage
the Emden from 9,500 yards. By 11:20 am, the
Emden was so heavily damaged that von Muller
gave the order to beach the ship on North Keeling
Island to prevent her from sinking. The Sydney
broke contact to pursue the Emden's support ship
(which later scuttled herself) and then returned to
Direction Island having received previous orders
to find out the status of the transmission station.
The Sydney returned to North Keeling Island the
following day to provide medical assistance to the
crew of the Emden. The final tally for the battle
was 134 personnel aboard the Emden killed, and
69 wounded, compared to only four killed and 16
wounded aboard the HMAS Sydney. The survivors
of the Emden’s crew became prisoners of war and
were transported from Malta to England.
As an after note to the battle, the German
personnel from the shore party, who could not be
recovered before the battle commenced,
“commandeered” a schooner and supplies from
the island and escaped from the British. They
sailed over the Indian Ocean avoiding the Allied
ships and into Constantinople. They then traveled
overland back to Germany. Eventually the crew
made its way back to Berlin for a heroes’
welcome.
In
May
1913,
Korvettenkapitan
(Commander) Karl von Muller, had become the
last Captain of the SMS Emden. He was not only a
daring captain but a chivalrous one as well, and
during his command he would earn the respect of
both friend and foe alike. The defeat of the
Emden brought an end to the active warships of
the Central Powers in the Indian and the Pacific
Oceans. Allied warships could be redeployed

elsewhere, and troop and supply ships could now
sail without a naval escort.
Some were sold on the open market, with the
remainder being melted down for bullion.

Numerous coins and canteen tokens were
salvaged from the SMS Emden (Figs. 1 and 2).
Beyond the recovery of the entire hoard of
canteen tokens, there were two $20 USA gold
pieces and over 6,400 Mexican 8 reales coins,
which were still accepted as currency in the Far
East. A thousand of the Mexican coins were made
into medals for the crew and select personnel.

In Memoriam – Lucio Toneatti
On Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, the Ottawa Numismatic Society lost a
long-time friend. Cancer finally defeated Lucio Toneatti after he
held the disease at bay for several years. He was just 65. Having
joined the then City of Ottawa Coin Club back in 1972, Lucio was
our most senior member. His forty-one years as a loyal and valued
part of our numismatic community is a remarkable achievement.
Lucio will be remembered by many of us as that fellow with the big,
friendly smile who greeted each club member as they arrived at
meetings. Lucio was our “official greeter” for many years, having
taken on the job from Ed Burt. He was also the man who conducted the 50/50 and door
prize draws. Through what seemed like magic, Lucio always managed to have a supply of
interesting door prizes that he would hand out to the lucky winners, always with his
trademark smile. A passionate and enthusiastic numismatist, Lucio was keenly interested in
every “show and tell” item that circulated at our meetings.
Lucio had an inquiring mind and a broad range of interests within the hobby, but his primary
collecting field centred on post-WW II European coins. He acquired items for their beauty of
design and their workmanship; proof coins were a particular passion. Lucio studied the
limitations of various proof coin packaging materials and developed novel ways of
preserving and storing his favourite and most vulnerable items. A highly organized man, he
was also a pioneer in storing information about his collection on computer spreadsheets.
This may seem pretty standard to many of us now, but it was not that long ago that the
concept was entirely new. Lucio was at the vanguard of the movement and eagerly
explained his system at several club meetings, to the great benefit of those of us wise
enough to heed his advice.
With Lucio’s passing, we have lost a truly passionate numismatist, a generous spirit, and a
fine gentleman. He will be missed by all of us who had the pleasure of knowing him.
