Introduction
Welcome to So You Really Want to Learn French 3. This third volume completes the
series, and, in addition to laying firm foundations for higher-level study, takes learners up
to the level they ought to reach for any examination they should face by the age of 13.
The main content of the book should ensure language competence in French up to
the Common Entrance examination at 13+ and beyond, with plenty of extension
work for the more able in the form of scholarship exercises.
The grammar summary, extensive vocabulary and audio CD complete the
comprehensive package offered by this book.

in the exercises denotes questions which are suitable for scholarship
level students.

Lis et écoute le passage et puis traduis en anglais.
Toute la famille a quitté la maison samedi matin à sept heures. Il faisait toujours noir.
En route pour la gare de TGV à Nantes, Peter a pu dormir dans la voiture. Tout le
monde s’est levé très tôt; personne n’a mangé. Papa a fait du café et on a chargé les
bagages dans le coffre de la voiture.
En partant, on a essayé de ne pas faire de bruit, mais ce n’était pas facile. On voyait
Monsieur Simonneau qui regardait les allées et venues de derrière la fenêtre de sa salle
de bains. Georges était excité, mais Martine somnolait – se lever à une heure aussi
matinale lui paraissait cruel! Maman conduisait pendant que papa lui indiquait la route. Il
n’y avait pas beaucoup de circulation. On roulait en silence. Personne ne parlait…
On a trouvé le parking longue-durée sans problème, et maman a garé la voiture, après
avoir pris un ticket. Papa a cherché un chariot pour les valises, et la famille s’est
dirigée vers l’entrée de la gare. Papa a parlé à Peter.

De or des?
With negative expressions, de is used (even with plurals).
Exemple:
Je ne mange plus de bananes.
Je n’achète jamais de bonbons.
I no longer eat bananas.
I never buy sweets.
La négation avec des verbes conjugués au passé composé et au plusque-parfait
When using these negative expressions with verbs in the perfect or pluperfect tenses,
simply make the avoir or être part negative, then add the participe passé:
Elle n’a rien vu.
On n’avait pas mangé.
Il n’est jamais venue chez moi.
She hasn’t seen anything.
We hadn’t eaten.
He has never come to my house.
La négation avec un verbe à l’infinitif
When using these negative expressions with an infinitive, make the verb before the
infinitive negative, then add the infinitive:
On ne va plus aller au parc.
We’re not going to go to the park any more.
No one is a special case!
‘Personne’ and ‘rien’ can be both the subject and object in a sentence.
On n’a trouvé personne à la piscine.
Personne ne m’a vu.
Rien n’est arrivé.
We found no one at the swimming pool.
No one saw me.
Nothing happened.
Again, notice how these expressions appear to be double negatives.

Les Colbert ont mis une journée entière pour arriver à leur destination. Le TGV était
rapide et confortable, mais il a fallu changer deux fois. Quand ils sont arrivés aux
Gets, il faisait déjà nuit, et très froid, mais ils ont demandé les directions et ils ont vite
trouvé le chalet. Le propriétaire du chalet est venu leur ouvrir. Il s’appelait Monsieur
Schmidt. Il était rondelet, aimable, et très accueillant.
