Before starting this little review, we wanted to thank the R4i team for the copy of their new
Save Dongle they sent us for our tests. The communication as the shipping were really fast,
so one first good point for the service!
First, a little reminder: At the moment when we're writing this article, two solutions already
exist to make your save dumps (save files, not ROM dumps, let's be clear.)
- some usb dongles (like the Backup Adapter, NDS Backup Adapter Plus, Néo SMS2 and
SMS4): they are easy to use, sometimes not really expensive, but can't deal with all the
savetypes. Even worst, some of them are corrupting the save of your cartridge if the type is
not recognised well.
- Crediar's dumper: which is, for the moment, accepting all the known save types but
requires a NDS/DSlite console and a linker to be launched. The main problem here is that the
3DS cartridges got a special design and can't fit into the old NDS consoles.
But Some solutions exist: Modify your NDS slot 1 to accept 3DS cartridge cases, or cut/open
your 3DS cartridge to be able to make the pcb entering into the NDS, or finally make your
homemade adapter to do a sort of external extension to your NDS slot 1 (that was what i did
personnaly).
But this time, you're lucky because the Save Dongle seems to mix all the advantages of
methods above: USB connection, and full support (for now at least) of NDS, DSi and 3DS
cartridges.
So how does it work? Be prepared... that's pretty hard:
1) unbox your little dongle, and insert your favorite cartridge inside it.
2) from the official website, download the dongle drivers, and the last version of the PC client
allowing you to dump/restore the saves.
3) install the drivers, and insert your dongle. It should be detected fast by your computer,
and the client.
4) Finally, click on the action you want to do: dump from cartridge to PC, or restore from PC
to cartridge. Apprentice cheaters will be happy to see that hundreds of saves are already
posted by the community on the official website!
So, after various tests done on NDS and 3DS cartridges, everything worked so far for the
moment.
Talking about the speed now, on a quite old computer dealing with the biggest actual save
types (flash 512k) we are dumping the save in approx 47 seconds, and restoring it in nearly
2.30 min.
So as you can imagine, a cartridge having a quite small savetype will only take few seconds.
We just regret to not have "Daigosso Band Brother DX" game under our hands to test it, with
its famous big save type I'm just curious!
Conclusion:
Advantages: super easy installation and utilisation, transfert speeds are impressive, full
compatibility with every type of cartridges and save types for all the games tested so far.
Cons: of course you need to use a computer (but if you want to grab your saves online, you'll
need one anyway). The little guys wanting everything free will probably cry, the hardware
costs around 20 euros depending of the countries and the resellers for the moment.
So as you can figure, this tool is actually the most complete and easy one to use until now if
you want to play a bit with your game saves, cheating, or restarting a game from zero with
always a possibily to move back to your old progression if needed. Pokemon cloners will be
happy ;)
FRENCH VERSION
Avant de commencer cette petite review, nous tenions tout d'abord àremercier l'équipe R4i
pour nous avoir envoyéun exemplaire de leur Save Dongle pour nos tests. Les mails comme
l'envoi ont étévraiment rapides, donc premier bon point pour le service!
Pour démarrer, un rappel de l'actualité: Au moment oùnous écrivons ce test, deux solutions
existent déjàpour réaliser vos dumps de sauvegarde (vos parties sauvegardées, pas de ROM,
je précise bien!).
- Les dongles usb (NDS Backup Adapter, NDS Backup Adapter Plus, Néo SMS2 ou SMS4):
bien pratiques et parfois pas cher, mais ne supportent pas toutes les types de saves, et
certains arrivent même àcorrompre la sauvegarde la cartouche.
- Le dumpeur de Crediar: supporte toutes les types de saves àl'heure actuelle mais nécessite
une NDS/DSLite et un linker pour fonctionner. Seul soucis, les cartouches 3DS ne rentrent
pas dans ces consoles, il vous faudra donc soit bidouiller votre slot 1, soit raboter votre
cartouche 3DS, soit fabriquer votre adaptateur maison pour faire une extension du slot 1.
La team R4i combine les deux, en combinant l'usb, et une compatibilitétotale (pour le
moment): NDS, DSi, et surtout 3DS.
Comme vous allez le voir, le fonctionnement du dongle est vraiment ultra compliqué:
1) déballez votre dongle, insérez votre cartouche fétiche a l'intérieur.
2) depuis le site du constructeur recupérez les drivers de la clé, et le client permettant le
dump/restoration de vos sauvegardes.
3) une fois les pilotes installés, insérez le dongle. Celui ci devrait etre rapidement reconnu par
le client.
4) et finalement, lancer un dump cartouche vers PC, ou une restauration PC vers cartouche.
Les tricheurs en herbe seront heureux de trouver plusieurs centaines de saves déjàpostées
par les utilisateurs du dongle sur leur site officiel.
Sur les divers tests effectués sur des cartouches NDS comme 3DS, pour le moment tout
semble très bien fonctionner. Niveau vitesse, sur un pc relativement ancien, les plus grosses
saves actuelles (flash 512K) nous avons réalisés des dumps en 47 seconds, et des
restaurations en 2m30. Autant dire qu'une cartouche avec une petite save ne prend vraiment
qu'un instant.
Bilan:
Qualités : Installation et mise en route facile, vitesse de transfert vraiment rapide,
compatibilitétotale avec tous les types de save (pour le moment), communautédéjàtrès
active avec des centaines de saves en téléchargement libre.
Incovéniants : avoir un pc sous la main. Les accros du tout gratuit vont devoir mettre la main
au porte monnaie, en moyenne 20€ selon le pays et les revendeurs.
