MARCO ARDIGO AGAIN WORLD CHAMPION. Already world champion after his 2007 triumph,
Marco Ardigo retained his title this afternoon on the international La Conca circuit at Muro Leccese.
The Tony Kart factory spearhead headed home the young Czech hope, Libor Toman (Birel-Parilla), just
17 years old, and team mate Gary Catt (Tony Kart-Vortex).
Those who had anticipated a fine spectacle and lots of suspense during the 45th staging of the World
Karting Championship were proved right. As expected, the competition was wide open with lots of
twists and turns to the plot. At the end of the day however, it was the reigning champion Marco Ardigo
(Tony Kart-Vortex) who once again climbed on to the top step of the podium.
After having won his 4th consecutive European Championship, the 25 year old Italian now joins the
elite group of drivers to have won at least two world titles. ‘However it was not an easy weekend’, explained Marco. ‘After my pole position secured on Friday, I encountered problems during my qualifying
heats and I was only 5th on the grid for the pre-final. I climbed to 2nd place, but then preferred to be
3rd to clinch an inside start for the Final. I got a good start and found myself in a battle with Kozlinski,
then with Gary (Catt) my team mate. But when he began to have problems with his tyres, I took command and I went clear of the pack. And here I am, the World Champion for the second time!’.
The opponents of the speedy Italian are therefore left to harbour hopes of the crown next year. Winner
of the pre-final, Arnaud Kozlinski (CRG-Maxter) went out on the second lap (engine failure) just when
he had taken control. Never really in contention since the beginning of the weekend, Sauro Cesetti (Birel-TM) and Jonathan Thonon (CRG-Maxter) lost out in turn as did the young Dutchman Jack Te Braak
(Zanardi-Maxter) who nevertheless has had a very good season.
Asserting himself at the beginning of the race as the principal rival of Marco Ardigo, his British team
mate Gary Catt (Tony Kart-Vortex) took the early initiative before suffering increasingly from excessive
tyre wear. So much so that he was punished not only by his team leader, but also by young Libor Toman (Birel Parilla). At 17 years of age, the Czech driver turned in an incredible performance. Classified
only 26th after timed practice, he pulled out all the stops to qualify 9th for the Final. Then passing one
by one, all those in front of him, Libor grabbed 2nd place and set off in pursuit of Ardigo. Eventually
finishing less than one second behind the winner, the young Czech was as happy as if he had taken the
top prize. ‘To finish in second place in my first world championship in KF1 I would not have dared hope
for’ he suggested, a broad smile on his face. ‘This race was incredible! I felt that I drove well and that
I could get up to second place. I had Marco in front of me but I could not quite close the gap. But so
what! It was a fantastic weekend! Now I hope to return next year and really impose myself’.
Finally finishing third, one place lower than last year, Gary Catt (Tony Kart Vortex) once again finished
in front of the Dane Nicolaj Bollingtoft (Kosmic Vortex). Leader at the end of the qualifying races, Nikolaj was made to pay dearly for a bad start in the pre-final and only finished in 8th place. In the Final,

the Dane occupied only 10th place at the end of the first lap. So his drive up to 4th place was therefore a good performance.
Behind them, once young British driver, Jason Parrott (Birel Parilla) had lost sight of his goal, there
was a particularly hot scrap between David Fore (Maranello-Maxter) and Manuel Renaudie (Gillard-Parilla) for 5th place. Renaudie’s team mate Matt Truelove (Gillard-Parilla) took a fine 7th place in front
of his compatriot Will Stevens (Tony Kart-Vortex) who was probably having his last kart race before
embarking on a car racing career. Frenchman Anthony Abasse (Sodi-Parilla) and Dutchman Bas Lammers (Top Kart-TM) completed the top ten.
The World Cup for the Teams was, as in 2007, awarded to the Tony Kart Team thanks to the victory of
Marco Ardigo and the 3rd place of Gary Catt.
KF2 World Cup : Camponeschi from start to finish
As a support class to the KF1 World Championship held in Murro Leccese, was the KF2 World Cup, the
class for aspiring young hopefuls. All the signs pointed to the favourite Flavio Camponeschi (Tony KartVortex). Third in the World Cup last year and European Champion this year, this young 16 year old
Italian had all the odds in his favour. Far from being intimidated by all this pressure, Flavio Camponeschi lived up to his Favourite’s billing. On Friday he missed out on top spot in the timed practice by just
55 one thousandths of a second. But thereafter, he was wheel perfect. Five wins in his five qualifying
races, victory in the pre-final and then absolute domination in the Final. Camponeschi didn’t offer his
opponents even a chance of beating him.
I can hardly believe it’ said the shy young Italian with stars in his eyes. ‘To win the world cup after having already won the European Championship... This has been a perfect year for me. I thank the team
and everybody who has helped me win so many trophies this year. Now I am ready to move up to the
top class, the KF1’.
After having secured the world championship with Ardigo, the Tony Kart team won the world cup and
even made it a double courtesy of British driver Oliver Rowland (Tony Kart-Vortex). Already integrated into the McLaren young drivers development programme, just like Lewis Hamilton was, Oliver was
to regret a penalty imposed in the pre-final for a jump start. Starting in 9th place, at the start of the
second lap Oliver had had a fantastic first lap to move up to 3rd place. But Camponeschi had already
established a gap... ‘I don’t think I could have beaten Flavio anyway, the British driver sportingly acknowledged. ‘I could match him for speed on a particular lap, but not consistently throughout the race.
I am already satisfied by winning my battle with Zdenek Groman over the closing laps’.
In the absence of a close race for first place, the spectators enjoyed the battle between Rowland and
the Czech Zdenek Groman (Maranello-Parilla). With Toman and Groman on the podium, the Czechs

MARCO ARDIGO À NOUVEAU CHAMPION DU MONDE. Déjà Champion du Monde en 2007, Marco
Ardigo a reconduit cette après-midi son titre sur le Circuit International La Conca, à Muro Leccese. Le
fer de lance de l’usine Tony Kart a devancé le jeune espoir Tchèque Libor Toman (Birel-Parilla), 17 ans
à peine, et son équipier Gary Catt (Tony Kart-Vortex).
Ceux qui espéraient du spectacle et du suspense pour la 45e édition du Championnat du Monde de
Karting ont été servis ! Comme on pouvait s’y attendre, la lutte fut en effet très ouverte et les rebondissements multiples. Au bout du compte, pourtant, c’est le tenant du titre Marco Ardigo (Tony KartVortex) qui est à nouveau monté sur le plus haute marche du podium.
Après avoir remporté pour la quatrième fois consécutive le Championnat d’Europe, cet Italien de 25
ans vient donc de rentrer dans le cercle des pilotes ayant remporté au moins deux titres mondiaux.
« Pourtant, ce ne fut pas un week-end facile, expliquait Marco. Après ma pole position de vendredi,
j’ai connu quelques problèmes lors des manches qualificatives et j’étais seulement 5e au départ de la
préfinale. Je suis remonté à la 2e place, puis j’ai préféré me retrouver 3e pour partir à l’intérieur. Le
départ s’est bien passé et je me suis retrouvé en lutte avec Kozlinski, puis avec mon équipier Gary.
Mais quand il a commencé à avoir des problèmes avec ses pneumatiques, j’ai repris le commandement
et je me suis échappé. Et me voilà Champion du Monde pour la 2e fois ! »
Les adversaires du rapide Italien en sont donc quittes à remettre leurs espoirs de couronne à l’année
prochaine. Vainqueur de la préfinale, Arnaud Kozlinski (CRG-Maxter) renonçait dès le deuxième tour,
alors qu’il venait de prendre le commandement. Jamais aux avant-postes depuis début du week-end,
Sauro Cessti (Birel-TM) et Jonathan Thonon (CRG-Maxter) renonçaient à leur tour, tout comme le
jeune Néerlandais Jack Te Braak (Zanardi-Maxter), qui n’en a pas moins réalisé une très bonne saison.
S’affirmant en début de course comme le principal rival de Marco Ardigo, son équipier britannique
Gary Catt (Tony Kart-Vortex) prenait les devants… avant de souffrir de plus en plus d’une usure excessive de ses pneumatiques. Au point qu’il se faisait doubler par son chef de file, mais aussi par le jeune
Libor Toman (Birel-Parilla). A 17 ans, le Tchèque est passé très près de l’incroyable exploit ! Seulement
26e des essais chronos, il remontait au fil du week-end pour s’élancer de la 9e position pour la finale.
Dépassant un à un ses adversaires, Libor s’emparait de la deuxième place et se lançait à la poursuite
d’Ardigo. Terminant à moins d’une seconde du vainqueur, le jeune Tchèque était aussi heureux que
s’il s’était imposé. « Terminer à la deuxième place de mon premier Championnat du Monde en KF1, je
n’aurais pas osé l’espérer, estimait-il, un large sourire aux lèvres. Cette course a été incroyable ! Je
sentais que tout fonctionnait bien et j’ai pu remonter jusqu’à la deuxième place. J’avais Marco devant
moi, mais je n’ai pas pu combler complètement le trou qui nous séparait… Qu’importe ! Ce fut un
week-end fantastique ! Maintenant, j’espère revenir l’an prochain pour m’imposer ! »

çait, comme l’an dernier, le Danois Nikolaj Bollingtoft (Kosmic-Vortex). Leader au terme des manches
qualificatives, celui-ci a payé cher un départ manqué lors de la préfinale, qu’il terminait à la 8e place
seulement. En finale, le Danois occupait seulement la 10e position au terme du premier tour. Sa 4e
place constitue donc une bonne performance.
Derrière, après l’abandon en vue du but du jeune Britannique Jason Parrott (Birel-Parilla), ce fut particulièrement chaud entre Davide Fore (Maranello-Maxter) et Manuel Renaudie (Gillard-Parilla) pour la
5e place. L’équipier de Renaudie, Matt Truelove (Gillard-Parilla), décrochait une belle 7e place devant
son compatriote Will Stevens (Tony Kart-Vortex), qui disputait probablement sa dernière course en
kart avant de passer à l’automobile, le Français Anthony Abasse (Sodi-Parilla) et le Néerlandais Bas
Lammers (Top Kart-TM) complétaient le top 10.
La Coupe du Monde pour les équipes a, comme en 2007, été attribuée à l’équipe Tony Kart grâce à la
victoire de Marco Ardigo et la troisième place de Gary Catt.
KF2 : Camponeschi fait la totale.
En marge du Championnat du Monde KF1, se déroulait à Murro Leccese la Coupe du Monde KF2, la
catégorie regroupant les espoirs. Les suiveurs pointaient principalement comme favori Flavio Camponeschi (Tony Kart-Vortex). Troisième de la Coupe du Monde KF2 l’an dernier, Champion d’Europe cette
année, ce jeune Italien de 16 ans avait en effet des arguments à faire valoir ! Loin de se laisser perturber par la pression, Flavio Camponeschi a fait honneur à son rang. Vendredi, il ne manquait le meilleur
temps des essais chronos que pour 55/1000e. Mais par la suite, Flavio a rendu une copie parfaite :
cinq victoires en cinq manches qualificatives, victoire en préfinale puis domination absolue en finale.
Camponeschi n’a rien laissé à ses adversaires !
« Je n’arrive pas à y croire,soufflait le jeune et timide Italien, des étoiles plein les yeux. Remporter la
Coupe du Monde après avoir déjà remporté le Championnat d’Europe… Ca a été une année parfaite
pour moi. Je remercie l’équipe et tous ceux qui m’ont permis d’accumuler autant de trophées cette
année. Maintenant, je suis prêt pour passer à la catégorie reine du karting, la KF1. »
Après avoir remporté le Championnat du Monde avec Ardigo, l’équipe Tony Kart remportait la Coupe
du Monde, et s’offrait même un doublé, grâce au Britannique Oliver Rowland (Tony Kart-Vortex). Déjà
intégré au programme de développement des jeunes pilotes de McLaren, comme le fut Lewis Hamilton
en son temps, Oliver pouvait regretter une pénalité reçue en préfinale pour un départ anticipé. Parti
de la 9e position en finale, au lieu de la deuxième, Oliver réalisait un fantastique premier tour qu’il
bouclait en 3e position. Mais Camponeschi avait déjà creusé l’écart… « Ceci dit, je ne pense pas que
j’aurais pu battre Flavio, reconnaissait humblement le Britannique. J’ai pu me montrer aussi rapide que
lui sur un tour, mais j’étais moins régulier. Je suis déjà content d’avoir remporté mon duel des derniers

A défaut de suspense pour la victoire, les spectateurs ont en effet profité de la lutte opposant Rowland
au Tchèque Zdenek Groman (Maranello-Parilla). Avec Toman et Groman sur le podium, la Tchéquie
était décidément à la fête à Muro Leccese.
Au pied du podium, les autres places d’honneur étaient décrochées par le Français Loïc Reguillon
(Sodi-Parilla), l’Italien Felice Tiene (CRG-Maxter), le Belge Sami Luka (CRG-Maxter), le Britannique
Elliot Burton (Tony Kart-Vortex), le Finlandais Leopold Ringbom (Gillard-Parilla), le Suédois Timmy
Hansen (Tony Kart-Vortex) et le Britannique Robert Foster-Jones (FA Kart-Vortex).
