The term Gaudete refers to the first word of the Entrance Antiphon, ‘Rejoice’. Rose vestments are worn to emphasize our joy that Christmas is near. We also light the rose candle on our Advent wreath. Indeed we have much to rejoice about during this time of year, the most important being “the reason for the season” - Christ Jesus. Yet, there are immense secular pressures to overdo it in the shopping malls. We can just pay for it later...right? In the face of all the excessive secular celebrating we rejoice in the gift of a stewardship way of life because it provides us with balance and discipline. Its color rose is a sign of hope. When excitement builds, as it certainly does for children at Christmastime, there is often a temptation to jump right into the event without having properly prepared for it. We do this too often. Such things take away from the joy of the actual feast. We still have time to properly prepare our souls and our hearts for the true meaning of Christmas. 4th Sunday of Advent: Mary responded yes to the request of God to bear His Son. Jesus responded yes to the will of the Father and gave His life for the sake of humankind. We, too, are invited to be part of the New Covenant that Jesus established. We say yes when we act out of love toward those around us and reach out to those in need throughout the world. You will notice in this week’s bulletin that there are three school masses.
