EGreetings and good wishes from Lomé. It’s
Ditorial
been long since you heard from us. In fact
this is our first official news letter. It’s been
late because of new appointments which had been reconsidered repeatedly for one reason or the other.
In this first edition you will find a four-year plan for our
unit after considering the responses to our question regarding how we want our unit to be. Looking at our new
and young unit we face quite a lot of challenges in terms
of finance and personnel but we are equally hopeful that
the future is going to be bright. We must therefore gather
courage to do what is worth doing. Let us support one
another in our bid to reconstruct and maintain a coherent
and unified family of missionaries as demonstrated by the
older provinces.
To do anything truly worth doing, we must not stand back
shivering or fanning ourselves and thinking of the cold
or heat and danger, but jump in with gusto and scramble through as well as we can. Let us not forget to go to
our elderly brothers and confreres whenever we get into
difficulties. We all get ‘em at times you know! Don’t let
pride stand in the way of asking friends and well wishers
for help.
Life’s not about waiting for the storms to pass, it’s about
learning to dance in the rain and this goes so well with one
of my favourite stories based on the joy and wisdom of
kids (a child’s view of thunderstorms):
A little girl walked to and from school every day. Even though the weather one morning was very questionable, and dark
clouds were forming, she still headed off to enjoy her day at
school. As the day progressed, the winds whipped up, along
with a tremendous thunderstorm.
The little girl’s mother felt concerned that her daughter
would be frightened as she walked home from school, and
she feared that the electrical storm might harm, or at least
terrify her child. Full of concern, the mother quickly got into
her car and drove towards her daughter’s school.
As she did, she saw her little girl walking along in her own
very unique and care-free way. And this time around there
was also an added surprise: At each flash of lightning, the
child would stop, look up, and smile.
More lightning than the mother had seen in a while, and with
each flash the little girl would look at the flash of light and
smile.
When the mother drew up beside her adorable child, she
lowered the window and called to her, ‘What are you doing
sweetheart’? The child answered, ‘I’m just looking as pretty
as I can because God keeps taking my picture’.
Just have a good day today; and every other day as you
face the storms that may come your way. We ask for your
cooperation and may God’s wisdom guide us in all we
do!

Présentation de la première équipe administrative du District-enFormation Golfe de Guinée
L’assemblé du DFA tenu à Calavi en Janvier 2008 avait demandé au Conseil
Plénier de cette même année la création de trois différentes entités en Afrique en
vu de répondre plus efficacement aux exigences et défis missionnaires actuels.
Ainsi depuis Janvier 2009 les Pères Basil SOYOYE, Nelson ADJEI-BEDIAKO
et Thaddeus OGATO dirigent respectivement les Districts-en-Formation Baie
du Bénin, Golfe de Guinée et Grands Lacs. Le District-en-Formation Golfe de
Guinée (DFGG) comprend 4 Régions : le Togo, le Ghana, la Côte d’Ivoire et le
Liberia. Mais dans un future, que nous espérons très proche, Le Burkina Faso et
la Sierra Leone seront comptés parmi ses composantes.

Côte d’Ivoire, il assure
au Secrétariat ; avec par
moment les conseilles
du ténor en la matière

au secrétariat du DFBB
à Ibadan.
Comme pour donner
son soutien total à cette
première équipe administrative et valider
sa prise de fonction, le
supérieur général de la
Société des Missions
Africaines, le P. Kieran
O’REILLY à participé
en personne à sa 1ère
rencontre tenue en Février 2009.
En effet, le Conseil du
DFGG se rencontre
deux fois par an. La
1ère qui se tient avant le
début de chaque année
pastorale consiste à définir le plan d’action de
l’année pastoral à venir,
puis au cours de la seconde qui a lieu principalement avant la fin
de l’année académique,
le conseil évalue aussi
bien son plan d’action que
les rapports des étudiants.
C’est aussi au cours de cette seconde réunion annuelle qu’entre autre se fait les
affectations et nominations
des confrères et étudiants
après consultations avec le
généralat.
Avec tout ce travail, espérons que la présence
du Supérieur Général à la
première rencontre de ce
Conseil sera un stimulant
pour qu’il mène à bien ses
projets administratifs puis
concrétiser ses différents
plans d’actions.

A Four-year plan (2009-2013) for
SMA District-in-Formation,
Gulf of Guinea
To secure a viable human and financial resource base for a sustainable
mission Ad Gentes.
1.Liberia:
1.1.Present Reality:
•SMA Parish, St Mulumba in Monrovia
•Vocation animator ready to go to Liberia
by 2010
•Investment in Agriculture: eg. rubber
plantation, a lucrative venture
1.2. Projects:
1.2.1. Mission and vocation animation:
- appoint a Mission animation & Vocations
Director by 2010
- He will assist in getting the Liberian
Regional house project started by 2010
1.2.2. Fund Raising and Investments
- buy a big stretch of land for rubber plantation
- invest in commercial plantation: rubber,
palm trees, etc
- Appoint someone to oversee these projects
1.2.3. and help push forward with the building of Regional House
2. Côte d’Ivoire
2.1. Present Reality:
2.1.1. there is a director for vocation and
mission animation
2.1.2. a group of Amical SMA exists
2.1.3. a land has been offered for a retreat
center
2.1.4. the possibility of getting land for
rubber/palm plantations
2.1.5. Commercial farming very lucrative.
2.1.6. Some bishops inviting SMA to take
parishes.
2.2. Projects:
2.2.1. Mission and vocation animation.

the help of Irish & American provinces by
the beginning of 2010.
Summer Holiday Retreat & Annual Meeting
3.2.4. Help push with the construction of
Regional house this year year.
3.3. Investments:
3.3.1. Strengthen the schools in Adukrom,
Kumasi and fence the SMA land there.
3.3.2. Get building and architectural plans
for school in Accra by the end of 2010
(help from GG Trust Fund, Extra-ordinary
building Fund & Bulid).
4. Togo
4.1. Present Reality:
4.1.1. There is a mission/vocation animator
4.1.2. There is an SMA support group
4.1.3. Archbishop ready to renew the
contract
4.1.4. Possibility of creating two SMA
parishes from the present one
4.2. Mission & vocation animation
- Make mission/vocation more dynamic by
2010
- Strengthen the SMA team in Agbedekè
- Assist in getting a contract between the
SMA and bishop of Lomé signed.
- Get a parish in Kara by 2011
-Try to get the problem of the land in
Lomé solved.
4.3. Investment:
- Explore the best option for the use of the
land already acquired.
-To divide the parish of Adamavo into two
sma parishes by end of 2012.
The administration of the District-in- Formation Gulf of Guinea invites all its members both on holiday and
working in the district’s territory, including those who can make it from Benin and Nigeria, to attend their 1st
annual meeting taking place in Winneba, Ghana on 15th & 16th September 2009. It is to pray, share, propose,
plan, encourage, stimulate….. You should be there for evening prayer and dinner on Monday 14th September.

Loving Father, I praise you, I
love you, I adore you.
Send your Holy Spirit to enlighten my mind to the truth
of your Son, Jesus, Priest
and Victim.
Through the same Spirit
guide my heart to his Sacred Heart, to renew in me
a priestly passion that I, too,
might lay down my life upon
the altar.
May your Spirit wash away
my impurities and free me
from all my transgressions
in the Cup of Salvation, Let
only your will be done in
me.
May the Blessed Mother of
your dearly beloved Son,
wrap her mantle around me
and protect me from all evil.
May she guide me to do
whatever He tells me.
May she teach me to have
the heart of St. Joseph, her

to protect and care for my
bride. And may her pierced

who suffer at the foot of the

son. Lord, make me a holy
priest, inflamed with the fire
of your love, seeking nothing
but your greater glory and

What our confreres want in the DFGG unit
As soon as he took command of office, the superior of DFGG consulted his unit members to
know what their expectations are and asked for their suggestions for the betterment of this
newly created entity? Here are the views of 10 members who responded.
1. Mission priorities. Map out
mission areas/territories/countries. Avoid having dispersed
missions
2. Organize DFGG assembly
this summer
3. Appointments be made for
a reasonable duration: 6 yrs or
more
4. To have a full time vocation
animator/fund raising personnel appointed immediately in
every region. Go to schools for
vocation animation. Work also
with diocesan vocation directors. Organize youth camps.
5. Develop and live concretely
a very strong fraternal and family spirit among members
(holiday sessions, sharing of
meals, days of recollection and
retreats, outings, etc). Organize
a forum, a facilitator outside
SMA, to discuss on how to
improve on inter personal relationship. Improve our family
spirit and sharpen our missionary conviction with determination, devotion, honesty and
self denial for the well being of
the District
6. Simple life style, fraternal
family spirit must be encouraged
7. Mission towards immigrants,
students, African elites, politicians and intellectuals
8. What contribution can we
bring to the agricultural sector
which is 50% of the economy
of our countries
9. Well planned programme for
initial and on-going formation.
Give quality formation; confreres be sent for studies early.
Send members for further studies even in Africa for some
lay courses
10. The superior and Council
will have to make very difficult
decisions on transfers and new
appointments for studies, sma
parishes in the unit and parishes
abroad
11. Concern for and encouragement to confreres who show
signs of vocation crisis
12. Consultation of members on
issues affecting them.
13. Affirmation of our identity

which are short lived
15. To form a missionary reflection commission

regions

18. Personnel for fund raising in
Canada, USA and Europe. An
African parish from where we
can create a network of benefactors

with information about our unit
and the other units.

22. Greeting Cards (X’mas,
Easter, birthday, etc), Mass
cards, calendars and diaries
23. Investments: lands, properties, schools, retreat centres, real
business (stores, shops, filling
stations, pharmacy, shops), buy
shares, rear Estates (in South
Africa for example), farm,
plantations (cocoa, coffee, palm
trees, rubber, etc)
24. SMA parishes in each Region. Promote our unit, letting
the bishops and the laity know
about it.
25. Mission appeal in the Regions, e.g. One Sunday during
the year in diocesan parishes
and once a month in SMA manned or pastured parishes: seek
permission first from the bis-
hops.
26. Internal banking within the
SMA
27. Encourage members to go
for supply during their holidays
28. Transparency in our accounts. The bursar to make
regular accounts and give information on the financial situation of the unit.
29. Confreres in South Africa
should be consulted before appointing a member there

The Year for
Priests
Pope Benedict XVI encourages all to pray for priests,
the Church’s spiritual leaders
and those who administer the
sacraments by declaring the
“Year for Priests,” which started June 19. The Holy Father
selected St. John Vianney as
patron saint for the special
year themed, “Faithfulness of
Christ, Faithfulness of Priests.”
St. John Vianney is honored by
the Church for his faithfulness
to the priesthood and is referred
to as a “model to the parochial
clergy.”
Catholic priests celebrate Mass,
hear confessions, visit the sick
and homebound, and bring all
of us closer to Christ in the
sacraments of baptism, Holy
Communion and reconciliation. They also serve on college
campuses, hospitals and
prisons bringing a message
of hope and forgiveness to
all. They work in all aspects of outreach including
religious education, respect
life, farm worker, youth
and family ministries.
During this special year,
please pray for the SMA
priests and other priests
working and retired who
have given their lives to the
Church and the people of
God. Please also pray for
an increase in vocations to
the priesthood.

mondiale.
Je voudrais tout d’abord rappeler
à tous les membres des districts en
Afrique que tous sont affiliés à EMI
a part ceux qui sont aux Etats Unis et tout autre
pays en Amérique qui ont un autre contrat.
Pour une utilisation maximale de cette assurance, il est important d’avoir sur soit les fiches de
l’EMI que l’on présent au docteur à la consultation pour signer. On peut faire signer autant
de fiche, autant de fois que l’on se à l’hôpital.

Le conseil Plénier de la Société des Missions Africaines
s’est tenu cette année à Domatine en Irlande. C’est une
rencontre très importante pour le Société ! Le DFGG
y était représenté par le P. Nelson ADJEI-BEDIAKO.
Avec l’aide de Dieu le Père par Jésus Christ, des grandes décisions ont été prises en présence du Saint Esprit.

Puisque nous perdons une somme considérable à la cotisation des confrères, j’encourage
tout le monde à prendre ces recommandations au sérieux et de les mettre en pratique
car cela nous permettrait d’avoir un retour,
aussi peu que cela puisse être, sur cet investissement.
Aussi, je voudrais continuer à encourager
les confrères où qu’ils travaillent de penser à comment aider le DFGG à générer
les 50% de son budget. Nous faisons face
à un problème financier sans précédent et
à moins d’apporter chacun sa contribution,
il nous serra difficile de gérer la situation.
Nous avons des membres à aider dans leurs
missions et d’autres membres a partir de
leurs missions peuvent aider le district. Travaillons main dans la main pour démontrer
notre solidarité les uns pour les autres. Cela
commence déjà par une bonne utilisation
des ressources à notre disposition.
Obsèques
Au cours de ce semestre, des membres du DFGG ont perdu des parents et
parentés. L’administration du DFGG par cette présente, voudrait encore
exprimer ses condoléances les plus attristées à:

Alexis Bassoma, pour le décès de son père, Woamede Walter, pour le décès de sa mère, Abalo Raphaël pour le décès de son père et Ghislain Inaï,
pour le décès de son père puis à tous les membres, amis et bienfaiteurs de
la Société des Missions Africaines en général et du DFGG en particulier
qui ont perdu un être cher.

Connais-tu le Bu.Li.D - Afrique ?

Tout d’abord Bu.Li.D-Afrique
veut dire Bureau de Liaison et
de Développement en Afrique.
Ceux qui étaient présents à la
dernière Assemblée du DFA à
Calavi se souviendront de ce
projet qui a été présenté et accepté par les différents délégués
présents. Il est inscrit dans les
résolutions. Le jeudi 26 mars
2009, à LOMÉ, les responsables
des trois DFA se sont retrouvés
pour définir les modalités de la
création du Bu.Li.D - Afrique.
Le BuLiD - Afrique pourrait
paraître ambitieux, peut-être
utopique pour certains. Il ne
veut en rien court-circuiter les
structures existantes ou à venir.
Il émane d’une demande exprimée par nos confrères des DFA
pour penser et renforcer la mise
en place des trois nouvelles entités. C’est ainsi qu’il s’est concrétisé. Il évoluera sûrement au
fil du temps.
Après concertation et réflexion,
il est apparu plusieurs aspirations :
● Promouvoir plus de solidarité
et de collaboration à l’intérieur
des districts,
● Un partage des ressources plus
équitable,
● Assouplir les procédures existantes de demande,
● Garantir l’aptitude à rendre
compte de l’usage des ressources financières auprès
des bailleurs de fonds,
● Et un engagement auprès des
plus pauvres, une mise en œuvre de la doctrine sociale de
l’Eglise pour l’Afrique et pour
ses peuples.
Quelle sera l’action du Bu.Li.D
– Afrique ? Il oeuvrera sur trois
secteurs :
1 – La coordination des projets
DFA (faisabilité, suivi du projet
sur le terrain et les bailleurs de
fonds, recherche de finances,
micro crédits, création de partenariats et de réseaux, …)
2 – L’initiation à la « mise en
place de projets » par des sessions organisées au profit des
acteurs de projets (présentation
et procédure de demande, étude
sociale et économique de l’environnement, gestion, rendre
compte des ressources, …)
3 – Une cellule Communication (chargée des informations
auprès de tous les Médias, interviews, photos, montages vidéos…) en collaboration avec le
Centre International des Médias
SMA.
Actuellement le Bu.Li.D - Afrique se compose d’une équipe de
deux personnes :

Le BuLiD - Afrique travaillera en étroite collaboration avec les trois nouvelles entités africaines qui
décideront des projets à financer selon les objectifs de
la SMA. C’est un chantier
de longue haleine qui nous
concerne tous. Il ne consiste
pas seulement à chercher des
financements mais veut être
un outil de conseil et de management pour ces nouvelles structures dans un esprit
de service. Nous comptons
sur votre confiance et votre
collaboration avec l’aide de
la solidarité de tous nos partenaires. Nous confions tout
cela à vos prières.
Le siège de ce bureau sera
basé à LOME. Sans vouloir
minimiser l’aspect administratif, le bureau se déplacera
aussi sur le terrain en vue
de conseiller et soutenir les
confrères qui sont responsables des projets définis.
Les nouveaux Districts-en-Formation, quelles abréviations ?
D’aucun pourrait argumenter que la question de savoir quelle abréviation utiliser pour les nouvelles entités ne vaut pas un article.
Peut être, mais force est de constater que selon que l’on lise un document ou un texte sur ces entités, les noms utilisés pour les désigner sont les mêmes. Par contre, les acronymes diffèrent selon la provenance de ces écrits. Ainsi, l’on peut lire DFB, DFBB ou BB
comme sigles pour le District-en-Formation Baie du Bénin, DFG ou DFGG pour le District-en-Formation Golfe de Guinée et DFL
ou DFGL pour le District-en-Formation Grands.
Le fait de parler Français et Anglais dans la Société des Missions Africaines et particulièrement dans les entités concernées, rend
l’équation encore plus complexe car les deux différentes abréviations françaises et les deux anglaises font quatre abréviations pour
chaque District-en-Formation. Par conséquent, il serait pratique d’harmoniser le tout. Que chaque entité opte pour le sigle qui lui
convient, bien sûr en concert avec le généralat.
Dans le cas du District-en-Formation Golfe de Guinée, il serait intéressant de choisir le sigle DFGG qui peut être utilisé aussi bien
en Anglais (District-in-Formation, Gulf of Guinea) qu’en Français (District-en-Formation Golfe de Guinée). Cette option lui permettrait d’emboiter le pas à la Société mère qui reste SMA quelque soit la langue.
