The Princess, fearing the effects of displacement, brought Hungarian vines to her new home in Alsace. The wines from the vines she brought were called Tokay after the famous Hungarian dessert wine known as Tokaji. Recent EU agreements have found that the Tokay d’Alsace infringes on the proprietary name of the Hungarian wine and Alsatian producers have agreed slowly to phase out the name Tokay, expunging all of the latent homesickness from the wine. There is, after all, no relationship between Furmint, the grape in Tokaji, and Pinot Gris. Tant pis, no? Tokay Pinot Gris Grand Cru 2003, J.M.
