Le SAM… une grande famille
internationale !
Aménagement de la montagne… tout un univers économique
au sein duquel les enjeux sont de taille : s’adapter à l’évolution
des mentalités, anticiper les exigences des comportements
touristiques, développer en permanence sur un plan
technologique tout en prenant en compte les contraintes
en terme de sécurité et de législation, intégrer les logiques
de concentration et de mondialisation des marchés, construire
les alliances qui permettront de progresser dans une logique
de développement durable… en quelques mots : construire
la montagne de demain. La montagne en tant qu’espace
à équiper mais aussi et surtout en tant qu’espace à vivre.
Dans ce cadre, tous les acteurs de la montagne ont besoin
d’un rendez-vous particulièrement fort. C’est ce que le SAM
à Grenoble est progressivement devenu. D’année en année,
la dimension internationale du salon continue de se renforcer.
Conformément à la stratégie poursuivie, l’édition 2004 permettra
de franchir un nouveau cap en terme d’internationalisation du
salon, confirmant ce dernier dans sa position de leader mondial.
Saluons au passage la Nouvelle Europe des Montagnes, forte
de ses 10 nouveaux membres, qui trouvera tout naturellement
sa place au SAM dès l’édition 2004. Gageons qu’à l’occasion
du SAM 2006 (nous y pensons déjà !) cette Union, avec tout
ce qu’elle représente en termes de besoins ou de marchés,
de forces mais également de spécificités, pourra trouver
un terrain d’expression à sa mesure.
A très bientôt à Grenoble dans les allées du salon.

Developing the mountains… a whole sector of the economy
in which the stakes are certainly high: adapting to changes
in thinking, anticipating the demands of tourist behaviour,
constantly developing new technology while taking into account
safety and legal constraints, incorporating the logic of market
concentration and globalisation, building up alliances in order
to make progress in line with sustainable development... in short,
building the mountains of tomorrow. The mountains have to be
developed, but they must also and above all remain a place
where people count.
In this context, all the mountain players need to have a
particularly strong forum of which to be a part, and this is what
the SAM in Grenoble has progressively become. From year to
year the exhibition has increasingly become an international one.
In line with the strategy that it has been following, the 2004
exhibition will go even further in terms of opening up
internationally, confirming the SAM as the world's leading
exhibition in the industry.
Mention should be made of the New Mountain Community of
Europe, which has ten new members and which will naturally be
a part of the SAM from this year. We can be sure that at the
2006 SAM (and we are already thinking about it!) the European
Union, with everything that it represents in terms not only of
requirements and markets but also its strengths and its specific
characteristics, will have a forum for expression that is its equal.

réserves d'eau en montagne. Les choix de produits suivis depuis 10 ans et le savoir-faire dans
la mise en œuvre permettent d'afficher aujourd'hui plus de 15 grandes références à travers
les Alpes.

Arvalis was established at the end of 2002 by Yves
Crosaz, and will be attending the SAM for the first
time. This design and engineering company specialises in site rehabilitation, working in project
management and supervision, conceiving and
completing projects and assisting with project
design. Services include preliminary expert assessments, technical advice and support, engineering
studies and completion studies (drawing up of
contract documents, work monitoring and results
assessment), application approval, external checks
and research and development.
Arvalis is independent of any commercial brand or
process, guaranteeing an objective approach and
the ability to tailor the solutions offered to the
expectations and constraints of developers.
Françoise Dinger, a senior expert research engineer
at Cemagref, the French national research centre
for agricultural and environmental engineering, and
a specialist in planting vegetation for stabilising and
protecting terrain in extreme conditions, has contributed to the growth of Arvalis in her occasional
capacity as ecology consultant.
Teragéos
Based in Grenoble, Teragéos is celebrating ten
years of building, distribution and on-site installation of its waterproof geomembrane products for
water reserves in the mountains. The company’s
choice of products and 10 year’s experience and
expertise in implementing its solutions are such
that it now has more than 15 major references

Following the new products introduced at the last
SAM, this year G.M.M. proposes a major change
in the development of its After-Sales Service website, with a 3D presentation of commonly distributed products, providing quick and interactive
consultation.
This year GMM is offering a new concept of its
compression sheave trains with a dampening
device which allows the grips through smoothly
and avoids the usual vibration problems on this
type of equipment.
Of course, this new sheave train will benefit from
the technical advances of the support sheave train,
i.e.:
- no welds, which makes for easy monitoring
and maintenance
- assembly and disassembly of rollers without
disassembling the sheave train from the rope
- compliance with future European standards.

visualiser le travail effectué.

GPS Location system applied
to Snow groomers
and Snowmobiles
The GPSE allows you to view the position of snow
groomers on a screen, in real time, with a precision
of roughly 1 metre. The machine's tracks are also
indicated, so that you can see how much work has
been done.
The GPS system proposed by Savoie Electronique
not only helps improve work monitoring and management, but also increases the safety of personnel
using snow groomers or snowmobiles; Savoie
Electronique is very much involved in radio equipment linked to personal safety (products developed
with the CRAM for instance).

La société Villeton en partenariat avec la
Sté Techni-Métal sont en train de concevoir une nouvelle génération de pousseur
prenant en compte l’ensemble des besoins en matières de déneigement. Après
enquête auprès de différents donneurs
d’ordres, il est apparu qu’une part significative des besoins n’était pas ou partiellement satisfaite. La demande actuelle
porte sur des engins garantissant aux
opérateurs un niveau de confort, de
sécurité, de conduite et de maniabilité
conforme aux attentes actuelles. Ce projet baptisé “CHOUCAS” vient de voir le
jour, et fera ses preuves à la saison prochaine hiver 2004/2005.
Ce pousseur est conçu au standard pour
recevoir des équipements tels que :
Etrave, aileron écretteur, fraise à neige,
faucheuse…
Comme son nom l’indique, le Choucas
passera son temps à déneiger dans les

Du nouveau chez Mecason !
Depuis 1993, Anticipation & Maintenance fournit des appareils
Mecason à Val-Thorens, Val-d'Isère,
Courchevel... pour surveiller en
continu le bon fonctionnement des
treuils de télésièges et télécabines.
Pour améliorer l'efficacité de cette
surveillance vibratoire, la société a
testé à Val-Thorens depuis mars 2001
l'intérêt d'enregistrer en continu
toutes les mesures sur un PC pour
mettre en évidence des éventuels
petits signes avant-coureurs fugitifs.
Les résultats s'étant avérés très satisfaisants, la société a développé un
système de cartes et logiciel pour
surveiller, à coût toujours très abordable, à l'aide d'un PC une ou plusieurs machines. Le produit gère les
variations de vitesse et neutralise les
phases transitoires pour ne délivrer
aucune fausse alarme.
Au travers du réseau télécom, le responsable exploitation ou maintenance pourra recevoir à son bureau
toutes les alarmes ainsi qu'un rapport
quotidien sur l'évolution de chaque
machine. En cas de besoin, il pourra
accéder à l'historique et écouter la
machine, de quoi améliorer sensiblement la réactivité de la maintenance
et par voie de conséquence, la fiabilité et la sécurité. c
Avalis
Le SNTF a demandé à la société Avalis,
basée à Meylan, de mettre au point une
nouvelle offre de formation pour les
cadres et agents de maîtrise des structures d’exploitation de remontées mécaniques et de domaines skiables.
Un premier cycle de modules communs à
l’ensemble des cadres et agents de maîtrise permet à ces personnes de prendre
conscience des différentes facettes du
rôle de cadre et de réellement élever leur
niveau de compétence.
Un deuxième cycle de modules spécifiques forme certains cadres aux métiers
particuliers de Chefs d’exploitation des
remontées mécaniques et des pistes.
Ces différentes formations, organisées en
“inter” chez Avalis à Meylan, ou en “intra”
dans les stations, sont accompagnées
d’une attestation de suivi de stage et
d’une validation des acquis.
Plusieurs stations ont déjà souhaité faire
profiter leur personnel de ces possibilités
à la fin 2003 et au début 2004. c

Villeton
Villeton, in partnership with Techni-Métal,
is designing a new generation of pushers
covering all snow-clearing requirements.
Following a survey of various contract-givers,
it appears that a significant part of their
needs was not satisfied or only partially. The
current demand is for machines guaranteeing operators a level of comfort, security and
driveability meeting the current expectations.
This project, called “CHOUCAS”, has only
just begun and will prove itself next
2004/2005 winter season.
This standard pusher is designed to take
equipment such as:
V-blade, pusher blade, snow cutter, snow
sweeper, etc.
As its name indicates, the Choucas will be
used to clear snow in alpine villages above
1 000 m of altitude. c

Dauphiné-Savoie, Adecco dispose d’un

compétences telles que conducteurs
d’engins de damage, employé de

skiables
Une cinquantaine de domaines
skiables a déjà fait appel aux compétences d’ORODIA pour des plans
topographiques, de l’Orthophoto ou
de la photogrammétrie. La plupart
des bureaux d’études de maîtrise
d’œuvre ont été satisfaits des relevés
effectués par ORODIA, sans compter
les bureaux d’études chargés des
risques naturels.
ORODIA est désormais un partenaire
et un prestataire apprécié des
domaines skiables, nous sommes
également conseillés par l’Institut
Géographique National sur la mise en
valeur de leur données cartographiques par le biais d’un partenariat.
Le trophée Géolink obtenu par ORODIA en 2002 pour la meilleure solution SIG sur les domaines Skiables
appelée GéoStation a confirmé cette
reconnaissance dans le milieu de la
montagne. c

has been appointed by the SNTF (National
Corporation of French Telepherics) in order
to set up a new training proposal designed
for the executives and managers of skilifts’
and ski resorts’ operating companies.
A first set of training sessions, which can be
attended by all executives and managers,
enable them to approach the various aspects
of their function and to really improve their
skills’ level.
A second set includes specific courses
aiming at training executives to the jobs of
skilifts’ or ski slopes’ running manager.
Those various training sessions can either
take place in our offices (gathering people
from various ski resorts) or in your resort
(better suited if you have to train an important number of persons). A certificate is
delivered to the trainees, together with a
validation of the acquired knowledge.
Several resorts have already offered their
staff to benefit from these possibilities during
the trainings we organized in late 2003 and
early 2004. c
VEM (Vibration –
Equilibrage – Maintenance
For the past 18 years, the vibratory
diagnoses conducted by V.E.M. have
guired operators in tenance of rotating
machines. Most of skilift builder trust
us for acceptance of new machines.
Real hands-on technicians, the V.E.M’
team also perform on site balancing and
laser line. c
Around fifty ski resorts have already used
ORODIA's expertise for topographic maps,
orthophotography or photogrammetry. Most
project management design and engineering
offices have been satisfied with measurements taken by ORODIA, not forgetting
design and engineering offices in charge of
natural risks.
ORODIA is now a partner and valued service
provider at ski resorts and we are consulted
by the Institut Géographique National
(National Geographic Institute) on making
the most of their cartographic data, through
a partnership.
The Geolink trophy awarded to ORODIA in
2002 for the best GIS solution for ski resorts,
called GeoStation, has confirmed this recognition in the field of winter resorts. c
Anticipation
& Maintenance
New from Mecason!
Since 1993 Anticipation & Maintenance has
been supplying Mecason products to Val
Thorens, Val d’Isère, Courchevel and other
resorts for continuous operation monitoring
of chair lift and gondola lift winches.
To make vibration monitoring more effective,
since March 2001 Anticipation & Maintenance has been testing out the idea of continuously recording all measurements on a
PC in Val Thorens, in order to detect any transient minor early warning signs.

- Une télécabine monocâble à
attaches découplables à La Clusaz.

cabines à 8 places assises qui ont
pour particularité de permettre l’accès des usagers avec leurs skis à la
main, une toute première en France.
- Un télésiège à pinces fixes de 4
places à La Plagne d’une nouvelle
génération dite “Mini Pilz” équipé

En 2004 seront mises en service

débits importants.

class IV pressure-sealed pinewood which

Each snow barrier is pre-drilled and assembled on-site using zinc-plate bolts supplied

The new Kart’oon
concept
DEFFI Constructeur is a new Grenoble SMI
just one year old, which specializes in
designing and manufacturing electric gocarts for children aged 5 to 12. Kart’oon is
an ecological cross-country go-cart for
children aged 5 to 12, for pure driving fun
indoors or outdoors.
The complete absence of air or sound pollution is a big advantage of the DEFFI gocart. Its great autonomy (4.5 hours) makes
it a unique product on the market, through
its energy regeneration system which
works during braking and deceleration.
The Kart’oon concept is protected by two
patents. c
The best way to fight against the destructive force of an avalanche is to stop it at ist
point of origin. Contrary to established safety measures, the Snowgripper is the only
system that intervenes in the stress ratios of
a covering of snow and thus prevents the
formation of an avalanche by removing the
original moment at which the avalanche is
triggered off.
The operational principle: snow transformation.
Assembly: The Snowgrippers are
arranged in the slope at a distance of
approximatly 5 meters in a triangular grid.
They are fixed to the mountainside with one
sole central anchoring unit, which saves

In 2003, two new ropeway types were
introduced in France:
- A detachable continuous monocable
gondola in La Clusaz. This installation
is the very first in France to use 8-passenger cabins where skiers can take
their skis into the cabin.
- A fixed quad chairlift in La Plagne,
equipped with the new generation of
“mini Pilz drives”. The distinctive
features of this chairlift are a very
compact drive and tension station and
a skier-friendly access area.
In 2004, another two ropeway types
shall have their première in France
and Andorra:
- A 2S detachable bicable aerial ropeway with 16-passenger cabins in La
Massana (Andorra). This installation
represents a felicitous combination of
two different ropeway technologies:
• Bicable technology (one fixed track
rope and one movable haul rope),

technology, which enables high carrier

à Congress Innsbruck
La conférence O.I.T.A.F., le 9ième Congrès
International des Transport à Cables aura
lieu au Palais des Congrès d’Innsbruck
(Congress Innsbruck) du 27 septembre
au 1er octobre 2005.
Ce congrès qui n’est tenu que tous les six
ans attirera 800 experts de l’industrie
téléphérique venant de tous les continents. Le dernier congrès avait lieu à San
Francisco.
L’organisation de l’Interalpin depuis de
longues années était une des raisons en

Innsbruck
The 9th International O.I.T.A.F. Congress for
Transportation by Rope will be held at
Congress Innsbruck from September 27 to
October 1, 2005.
This congress, which takes place every six
years only, will attract some 800 participants
from all continents. The last congress was
held in San Francisco. All participating
experts are operators and associates of the
international rope transportation industry.
Innsbruck has successfully shown its competence to hold such an event, through 15
years of experience with the organisation of
the traditional Interalpin exhibition. The next
Interalpin expects about 15 000 visitors at the
Innsbruck Fairgrounds from April 4th to 6th
2005.
Two architects of worldwide renown,

Swiss cableway company Garaventa to
intensify its co-operation with the Austrian
steel wire rope manufacturer, Teufelberger.
The first big order is the assembling of a new
cableway in the Bernese Oberland region
known as “Hasliberg Reuti – Mägisalp”, further projects in Switzerland are on hand.
Orders are already executed for a material
cableway in Turkey as well as for various ski
run preparation systems.
More than 100 years of experience and
know-how and a wide range of services are
the crucial factors for the success of the
Austrian company, complimented by progressive quality improvements from the
organisations in-house R & D department.
This makes it possible for Teufelberger to
deliver according to the European CEN standards. The aggregate safety regulations,
which will come into force in May, require

Confortablement installé dans des locaux récemment aménagés en bordure de l'A43, à
Montmélian, et partagés avec les filiales Prinoth et
Snowstar, Denis Ribot évoque avec un brin d'humour la solidité du groupe dont il préside la filiale
française : “il n'y a que dans la billetterie que nous
Denis Ribot ne sommes pas présents”. Pour ce jeune ingénieur

mécanicien de 37 ans, il va de soi que le développement de Leitner est une saga prometteuse. “La
caractéristique principale et légendaire de notre
marque est de faire dans l'efficacité et la fiabilité. Notre métier nous conduit à
fabriquer des composants de plus en plus standardisés, utilisables sur le plus
grand nombre d'appareils, et à les assembler. Au sein de notre groupe nous
développons des synergies pour optimiser nos fabrications et nos coûts.”
Sur le terrain, cette stratégie se traduit en termes d'innovations techniques :
pinces pour bi-câbles débrayables, utilisées récemment dans les Dolomites sur
une télécabine d'un débit de 4 000 skieurs/heure, nouvelle cabine “Diamond”
développée par Sigma, ainsi qu'un ingénieux système de stockage de véhicules
pour télésièges débrayables.
Les filiales Prinoth et Snowstar dirigées en France par Richard Marinelli et Marc
Hutter, connaissent, elles aussi, une importante progression : chez Prinoth, on
développe, outre la puissance et la technicité des machines, les services et
contrats de maintenance, aussi bien en hiver
que hors saison ; quant à la filiale neige de culture, elle a fait ces 2 dernières années de belles
percées dans les Alpes et les Pyrénées.
A la veille du SAM 2004, Denis Ribot est impatient de retrouver l'atmosphère conviviale
d'Alpexpo : “Le SAM est un rendez-vous
incontournable, c'est l'occasion de montrer à
nos clients que nous sommes proches d'eux, et
à leur écoute. Je pense aussi que le SAM doit
miser, pour l'avenir, sur les colloques et les rencontres professionnelles. C'est de plus en plus
néccessaire pour bien se comprendre.” Une
orientation que les partenaires et organisateurs du salon ont d'ores et déjà prise à leur
compte.

Michael Seeber is a company boss who commands admiration. In just three years he
has turned his South Tyrol-based company into a diversified and powerful group with
a presence in practically every sector of the mountain resort development business.
2000, the key year in his strategy, was one of considerable external growth in ski lifts,
piste grooming machinery and artificial snow making. Comfortably settled in to recently
built premises by the A43 motorway in Montmélian shared with subsidiaries Prinoth
and Snowstar, Denis Ribot talks of the strong position of the group, of which he is chairman of the French subsidiary, with a hint of a smile, “The only thing we are not involved
in is ticketing.” For this 37-year-old mechanical engineer it goes without saying that the
growth of Leitner is a promising saga. “The main characteristic of our brand, the one
that has made our name, is providing efficiency and reliability. The industry is moving
towards increasingly standardised components for use in a vast number of products,
which we manufacture and assemble. We are developing synergies within the group to
optimise our manufacturing processes and costs.”
The tangible results of this strategy are technological innovations: grips for a detachable bicable gondola, used recently in the Dolomites in a gondola lift with a capacity of
4,000 skiers/hour, the new “Diamond” cabin developed by Sigma, and an ingenious
storage system for detachable chair lifts.
The subsidiaries Prinoth and Snowstar, run in France by Richard Marinelli and Marc
Hutter, have also been growing rapidly: at Prinoth, in addition to increasingly powerful
and technically sophisticated machinery, the company has been developing its services
and maintenance contracts, both in winter and out of season; as for Snowstar, involved
in artificial snow making, in the last two years it has made some significant breakthroughs in the Alps and Pyrenees.
In the run up to the 2004 SAM, Denis Ribot is impatient to get back to the convivial
atmosphere of Alpexpo. “The SAM is a must, it’s our opportunity to show our customers that we are in touch with them and are listening to what they have to say. I also
think that in the future the SAM must take the plunge and organise seminars and professional meetings. It’s becoming more and more necessary if we are to understand this business.” A direction that
the partners and organisers of the exhibition have already
taken on board.

D'abord il y eût Claudius, le grand-père, habile jardinier, trop tôt disparu. Puis Jean, le père, qui développa la modeste entreprise savoyarde dans le secteur des travaux de montagne. Aujourd'hui, ce sont ses
fils qui ont repris les rennes de l'affaire familiale. En l'espace de trois
générations, le nom de MILLET est devenu symbole d'excellence sur
les plus prestigieux chantiers de revégétalisation des domaines
skiables (pistes olympiques de Val d'Isère et de Turin 2006) comme sur
les aménagements paysagers autoroutiers ou ferroviaires (autoroute
de Maurienne, TGV Méditerranée, J.O d'Athènes 2004).
Une telle carte de visite ne doit rien, bien évidemment, au hasard.
Dans les années 70, en plein boum de l'or blanc, Jean Millet fut un des
premiers à travailler sur le réengazonnement des pistes de ski, en
étroite collaboration avec le CEMAGREF et l'INRA. Très vite, le savoirfaire de MILLET s'est imposé, grâce, notamment, au développement
de contrats de production d'espèces végétales adaptées aux climats
et aux sols de montagne ; l'objectif était de fixer les pentes dégradées,
soumises à forte érosion. Avec les J.O d'Albertville, l'entreprise a pris
un nouvel élan. A côté des chantiers de revégétalisation des pistes, les
stations ont compris, en effet, l'importance de soigner leur image par
des aménagements paysagers, histoire de faire, le plus possible,
oublier le béton. “Aujourd'hui, on parle de génie végétal, en opposition,
ou plutôt en complément du génie civil. Cette notion est née chez
nous grâce au travail effectué sur les rivières, en réalisant des protections et des soutènements de berges. Nous nous sommes d'ailleurs
fait une vraie spécialité dans ce domaine, et nous transposons maintenant ces techniques en montagne.” Jean-François MILLET est intarissable sur les avantages techniques et esthétiques de ce type d'interventions, dans des sites où la stabilisation des terrains et des talus
est rendue nécessaire par une intense pratique sportive. Ce fut le cas
récemment sur les pistes olympiques de Sestrières et ce le sera sur le
futur stade de ski nordique des Jeux de Turin.
Albertville, Turin, Athènes. Décidément, le destin de cette PME d'à
peine 70 salariés est étroitement lié à l'olympisme. Altius, citius, fortius,
pourrait bien être aussi la devise de ce jeune chef d'entreprise de 35
ans, qui a pris délibérément un parti : celui d'aimer la montagne et la
nature. Tout simplement.
First there was Claudius, the green-fingered grandfather who died too
young. Then came Jean, the father, who built up a modest Savoie business
in the mountain construction industry. Today, his sons have taken over at the
helm of the family business. In the space of three generations, the name
Millet has become synonymous with excellence in the most prestigious ski
area revegetation projects (the Olympic pistes in Val d’Isère and Turin for
2006) and also in motorway and railway landscaping (the Maurienne motorway, the Mediterranean TGV line and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens).
Such a reputation is of course not down to chance. In the 1970s, in the middle of the white gold boom, Jean Millet was one of the first to be involved
with reseeding ski pistes, working closely with the French National Research
Centre for Agricultural and Environmental Engineering (CEMAGREF) and
the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA). Millet’s expertise
very quickly gained a dominant reputation, due mostly to the company’s
increasing number of contracts to produce plant species adapted to mountain climates and soils; the objective was to stabilise deteriorating slopes
which were being badly eroded. The Winter Olympics in Albertville gave
Millet another boost. Indeed, quite apart from piste revegetation projects,
ski resorts now recognise the importance of improving their image through
attractive landscaping in order to make their concrete buildings less
noticeable. “These days the phrase is plant engineering, as opposed to, or
rather as a complement to, civil engineering. We developed this concept
through our work on rivers, building riverbank protection and support.
What’s more, we have made this field a speciality and we are now applying
these techniques to the mountain environment.” Jean-François Millet could
go on for ever about the technical and aesthetic advantages of this kind of
work, on sites where intense sporting activities make it necessary to stabilise
terrain and embankments. This was the case recently on the Olympic pistes
in Sestrières, as it will be in the future nordic skiing stadium for the Turin
Winter Olympics.

Petzl Sécurité : Innovation et pédagogie
“Chez Petzl, nous exerçons un seul métier,
issu de notre expérience en matière de montagne et de spéléologie. Ce métier est étroitement lié à la corde, symbole de verticalité,
et à l'éclairage, élément prépondérant dans
la pratique de la spéléo.”
Quand Paul Petzl évoque les trente années
qui ont vu son entreprise devenir un leader
reconnu en matière de matériel d'escalade et
de spéléologie, les mêmes mots reviennent
sans cesse à sa bouche : sécurité maximale,
innovation permanente et pédagogie indispensable pour bien comprendre les pratiques de la verticalité. A Crolles (38), siège
de l'entreprise, l'atmosphère est conviviale,
quasi familiale. L'activité s'organise autour de
deux principes : innover pour garder toujours
une longueur d'avance, tout en restant attaché aux valeurs de rigueur transmises par le
fondateur vénéré Fernand Petzl.
L'activité sécurité de Petzl concerne les travaux en hauteur sur les pylones et pour l'éva-
cuation des télés portés, ainsi que, plus
récemment les évolutions sur “via ferrata” et
dans les parcs d'aventures.
Les produits adaptés à ces activités sont
dérivés de ceux destinés au marché du loisir
sportif : casques, baudriers, poulies, descendeurs, bloqueurs. Leurs dispositifs de sécurité sont simplement renforcés dans la mesure
où ils répondent à des usages et à des
normes différents.
Chez Petzl, le bureau d'études et la tour d'essais sont sollicités en permanence. Cette
année, les nouveautés concernent un bloqueur antichute mobile de conception assez
révolutionnaire (disponible fin 2004) ainsi
qu'une poulie pour tyrolienne imperdable. De
plus, tous les harnais sont équipés, à la
demande, de boucles automatiques fast.
Mais, pour Paul Petzl, la technique sans la
pédagogie serait par trop incomplète, voire
même dangereuse ; d'où l'effort financier très
important (150 000 euros) engagé dans la
réalisation d'un cédérom, véritable outil d'aide à la gestion des parcs de matériels. “Et ça
n'est pas pour vendre notre marque, car tous
les manuels de pédagogie que nous offrons
avec nos produits sont valables pour n'importe quel type de matériel de montagne.”
Enfin, la perspective de l'élargissement de
l'Europe n'est pas pour déplaire à notre chef
d'entreprise : “Notre progression est aujourd'hui importante avec les pays de l'Est dont
le pouvoir d'achat augmente, et il est clair
que nous aurons, grâce à l'Europe à 25, de
nouveaux marchés à conquérir.”

Petzl’s involvement in safety is in work at height
on pylons and in evacuating people from aerial
ski lifts, together with its more recent involvement in developing equipment for via ferratas
and adventure parks.
The products adapted for these activities are
derived from products produced for the sports
and leisure market: helmets, harnesses, pulleys,
descenders and rope clamps. Their safety features are simply more stringent since they are for
different uses and comply with different standards.
At Petzl, the design and engineering department
and test tower are constantly being called upon.
The new products for this year are a mobile fall
arrester rope clamp with a somewhat revolution-
ary design (available from late 2004) and a
Tyrolean slide pulley that always remains within
reach. In addition, on request all their harnesses
can be equipped with FAST quick-connect buckles. But, for Paul Petzl, providing technology without teaching people how to use it is doing only
half the job, and is even dangerous; hence the
considerable amount of money (150,000 euros)
spent on producing a CD-ROM designed to
teach people how to manage the different categories of equipment. “And it is not in order to sell
our particular brand because all of the instruction
manuals that we give away with our products
apply to any type of mountain equipment.”
Lastly, the prospect of European enlargement
is something that this company boss is looking
forward to. “These days we are making major
inroads into Eastern Europe, where the purchasing power is increasing, and in a Europe of 25
countries it is clear that there are new markets to
be won.”

Les transports à câbles vont bon train... Pour le géant autrichien des remontées mécaniques, le rayonnement sur le
marché mondial évolue d’autant mieux que la tendance est,
pour l’heure, au renouvellement du parc. “Cela fait déjà
quatre ou cinq ans que les stations se situent dans cette
logique. Aujourd’hui, nous atteignons notre vitesse de croisière, et espérons équilibrer le rapport renouvellement-installation ces prochaines saisons”, indique Alain Croses, PDG
de Doppelmayr France. Cette phase s’explique aussi bien par
le souci de se conformer aux nouvelles normes réglementaires imposées aux exploitants que de s’adapter aux exigences, sans cesse accrues, des skieurs. Réduction du temps
de transport, confort, fiabilité, esthétique et ergonomie sont
ainsi les maîtres mots du développement de la gamme de produits du groupe. “Car l’innovation proprement dite, par
exemple en terme de performance, reste limitée par la réglementation. Aussi, notre évolution s’appuie essentiellement sur
la sécurité et le confort de nos appareils.” Du plus petit téléski
d’apprentissage au grand Funitel, en passant par les téléphériques à va-et-vient ou les télépulsés, le constructeur élabore
du sur-mesure avec ses technologies de pointe pour répondre
aux spécificités et aux besoins de la station. Comme il s’y
attache actuellement pour le domaine de l’Alpe d’Huez, en vue
de faciliter la liaison du Pic blanc aux Marmottes III avec l’installation d’un nouveau téléphérique 3S, livré l’hiver prochain.
Comme il le fait encore pour les besoins de La Massana, en
Andorre, avec un téléphérique 2S. Quant au développement de
nouveaux équipements, dans la lignée du Vanoise Express
reliant les Arcs à La Plagne, Miachel Doppelmayr n’en fait pas
une priorité dans les perspectives d’évolution. “Encore que, si
l’occasion devait se présenter, nous étudierions minutieusement la demande et envisagerions cette possibilité. Nous ne
rejetons pas cette hypothèse de développement”, indique-t-on
au siège du groupe. Un développement qui s’oriente plutôt
vers la diversification, en innovant dans les domaines d’activités hors neige comme les transports urbains. “Nous avons
notamment développé un système de transport des voyageurs
dans les aéroports. Cela reste assez marginal, mais ce peut
être une ouverture intéressante.”

Ropeway systems are on a roll... For this huge Austrian ski lift
manufacturer, their increasing share of the world market is all the
more welcome since the current trend is for resorts to be renewing
their stock. “Ski resorts have been thinking along these lines for four
or five years now. We are now reaching our cruising speed and hope
to strike a balance in the proportion of renewals to new installations
in the next few seasons,” says Alain Croses, MD of Doppelmayr
France. This phase can be explained as much by the operators’
need to conform to the new legal standards that have been brought
in as it can by their desire to keep pace with the constantly increasing demands of skiers. Shorter journey times, comfort, reliability,
aesthetics and ergonomics are the watchwords when it comes to
developing the group’s range of products. “Because innovation in
the strict sense of the word, for example in performance, remains
limited by the legal requirements. This is why we are essentially
working on improving the safety and comfort of our lifts.” From the
smallest beginners’ ski tow to the large Funitel, and including aerial
tramways and pulsed gondola lifts, Doppelmayr manufactures
tailor-made products using cutting-edge technology, in line with the
specific requirements of each resort. As is currently the case in the
resort of Alpe d’Huez, to improve the link from the Pic Blanc to Les
Marmottes III by installing a new 3S cable car, delivered next
winter. And as is also the case in La Massana, Andorra, with a 2S
cable car. When it comes to developing new facilities like the
Vanoise Express linking Les Arcs and La Plagne, Michael
Doppelmayr is not making that a priority in his consideration of how
the company should develop. “However, if the opportunity should
present itself we would carefully consider any such request and
examine the possibility. We are not rejecting such ideas as a way of
moving forward,” is the message coming out of the group’s head
office. The group is instead moving more towards diversification,
with innovations outside the snowsports industry, in urban transport
for example. “One of our new developments is a passenger transport system for airports. This remains marginal for the moment, but
could represent an interesting opening.”

CCI de Savoie
Un espace d’accueil des visiteurs étrangers sur le SAM
La CCI de la Savoie, France Neige International et le SAM ont prévu cette année d’accueillir les
décideurs étrangers sur un espace dédié et de leur faciliter les contacts. Une action spécifique
a été lancée auprès de 2 500 décideurs sélectionnés dans le monde entier. Rappelons que le
marché mondial s’articule autour de 4 000 stations et 28 800 installations de remontées mécaniques pour 80 à 100 millions de skieurs qui génèrent plus de 380 millions de journées skieurs.
La France, dans ce contexte, possède le plus grand domaine skiable du monde avec 15 % des
remontées mécaniques mondiales.
Des liens privilégiés avec le Canada :
l’accueil d’une délégation québécoise
Parallèlement à cet événement, la CCI de la Savoie, en collaboration avec l’Espace Rhône-Alpes
(bureau économique de la Région à Montréal), ERAI (Entreprises Rhône-Alpes International),
France Neige International et l’ASSQ (Association des Stations de Ski du Québec), accueillera
des professionnels des stations de ski ainsi que des opérateurs québécois du secteur de la
montagne.
Un programme spécifique leur est réservé. Il prévoit rencontres individuelles avec des entreprises régionales, visites techniques en stations et journée au SAM. Une visioconférence a été
organisée le 25 février à Chambéry dans les locaux et avec le soutien de France Télécom, et à
Montréal. Elle a déjà permis à une soixantaine de nos acteurs économiques (dont de nombreux
professionnels des stations et des entreprises liées à l’aménagement de la montagne) de présenter le potentiel de notre région aux professionnels québécois du secteur. Les échanges
étaient lancés par Jean-Pierre Hugueniot, Président de la Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie
de la Savoie, et, le moins qu’on puisse dire, c’est qu’ils ont été directs et fructueux. Les débats
animés par le journal Aménagement et Montagne et des témoignages, notamment la société
POMA, furent de suite très pragmatiques.
De plus, dans la perspective des prochains Jeux Olympiques de Vancouver 2010, Madame
Christelle Sparapan-Bertron, chef de secteur à la Mission Economique de la France à
Vancouver, rencontrera les entreprises rhônalpines intéressées par le marché canadien de
l'équipement et de l'aménagement de la montagne. Elle sera basée sur l'espace dédié aux
décideurs étrangers pendant la durée du Salon.

A reception area for foreign visitors to the SAM
The forthcoming SAM event will again this year bring together all
the players in the mountain-based economy, with 52 countries
being represented. More than 430 exhibitors and brands will be on
show to almost 11,000 visitors from all over the world. This year,
the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the Savoie, France
Neige International and the SAM are providing a special reception
area for foreign decision makers to make it easier for them to make
contacts. A separate campaign has been launched publicising the
event among 2,500 selected decision-makers all over the world.
The worldwide market is made up of 4,000 ski resorts and 28,800
ski lift installations attracting 80 to 100 million skiers who generate
more than 380 million skier-days. In this context France has the
largest ski area in the world, with 15% of the world's ski lifts.

While the SAM is on, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for
the Savoie, together with the Espace Rhône-Alpes (the economic
office representing the Rhône-Alpes region in Montreal), the Contact :
business consultancy body ERAI (Entreprises Rhône-Alpes CCI de la Savoie F.N.I.
International), France Neige International and the ASSQ Service Relations
(Association of Quebec Ski Resorts) will host a visit by ski resort Internationales :

professionals and mountain industry operators from Quebec.
They will follow a separate programme that will include individual 04 79 75 76 36

meetings with companies from the region, technical visits to

resorts and a day at the SAM. A videoconference was organised
in Chambéry on 25 February with the support and on the premises
of France Télécom and in Montreal. The conference has already given some sixty of the region's
economic players (including several resort professionals and companies working in mountain resort
development) the opportunity to present the region's potential to industry professionals in Quebec. The
conference was started off by Jean-Pierre Hugueniot, President of the Chamber of Commerce and
Industry for the Savoie, and proved extremely frank and fruitful. The subsequent debates, chaired by the
publication Aménagement et Montagne, and the contributions from companies such as Poma, were
very pragmatic.
In addition, with a view to the forthcoming Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver in 2010, Mme Christelle
Sparapan-Bertron, division head for the French Economic Mission to Vancouver, will be meeting companies in the Rhône-Alpes region interested in the Canadian market for the mountain infrastructure and
resort development. She will be based in the reception area for foreign decision-makers throughout the
exhibition.

L’Association Nationale des Elus de la Montagne a saisi l’opportunité du rassemblement international des professionnels de la montagne pour proposer un temps de
réflexion sur les politiques de la montagne dans les différents Etats européens, dans
le cadre du SAM de Grenoble.
En effet, il faut bien le constater, l’appréhension de la réalité montagnarde est diverse sur le Vieux Continent. On peut le comprendre lorsqu’on constate qu’elle ne représente qu’une partie limitée du territoire ici (Allemagne, Suède), entre un quart et la
moitié avec des millions d’habitants là (France, Espagne, Portugal, Italie), quand ce
n’est pas tout le pays, ou presque, ailleurs (Autriche, Slovénie, Suisse).
Pourtant, cette différence objective n’explique pas tout. Des Etats dans des situations
comparables ont des démarches législatives différentes. Par ailleurs, l’Union européenne qui n’a pas d’approche spécifique intervient sur ces territoires à travers ses
politiques agricole, régionale et de cohésion.
En liaison étroite avec l’Association Européenne des Elus de la Montagne, l’ANEM a
donc décidé de rassembler la matière existante sur les pays européens, afin d’établir
des comparaisons, d’en faire la synthèse et la présentation.
Outre le témoignage de représentants de différents pays européens (Etats membres,
nouveaux entrants, candidats à l’entrée ou hors Union européenne), sur la réalité de
leur montagne et de la politique qui s’y applique, cette journée comprendra l’intervention de représentants de la Commission européenne pour rendre compte d’une
étude qui interroge la notion même de montagne. Pour la France, le délégué à l’aménagement du territoire, Nicolas Jacquet (sous réserve de confirmation) ou son représentant, restituera la teneur des débats sur la spécificité montagne, voire sur le
concept d’aménagement du territoire, perçue de façons différentes au sein du
Conseil des ministres de l’Union.
Cette rencontre sera l’occasion d’entendre les acteurs locaux de la montagne des
nouveaux membres de l’Union sur leurs ambitions, leurs projets et leurs exigences
pour développer le tourisme et l’équipement de leurs régions. Les professionnels
présents pourront les entendre et leur donner des éléments de réponse
concrets.
Ce premier rendez-vous sur les politiques de la montagne en Europe pourrait, si l’intérêt suscité par le
colloque le justifie, être suivi d’une rencontre
régulière justifiant l’approfondissement de
l’étude et de la réflexion comparative
afin de créer un véritable réseau
d’échange et d’expérience entre
responsables locaux. Il pourrait
être l’amorce d’une doctrine
commune (et non uniforme)
pour obtenir l’intégration
de mesures spécifiques
dans le cadre global

Fabriqué et largement utilisé aux Etats-Unis, le
Snomax est un additif, contenant une protéine
d'origine bactérienne, autorisé dans certains
pays, réglementé ou proscrit dans d'autres.
Employé dans les systèmes de fabrication de
neige de culture pour son pouvoir cryogène,
son impact sur l'environnement - notamment
sur la présence éventuelle de bactéries dans
la neige produite, et les modifications de la
végétation des pistes enneigées - n'avait pas
encore été analysé avec précision jusqu'à ce
jour.
C'est désormais chose faite, grâce à un programme de recherches engagé depuis 3 ans
dans deux stations alpines (Valloire et Antagnod dans le Val d'Aoste) par l'équipe “végétalisation d'espaces érodés” du Cemagref de
Grenoble et les départements biologie végétale, agronomie, sylviculture et gestion du
territoire de l'Université de Turin. Les deux
équipes de recherche présenteront donc, au
cours de ce colloque, les résultats définitifs
de leurs études sur l'impact du Snomax sur
l'homme et l'environnement. Rappelons qu'en
France, 4 000 hectares de pistes,
dans 185 stations, sont
enneigées
artificiellement.

and Snomax…
what impact on
the environment?

Manufactured and widely used in the United
States, Snomax is an additive that contains a protein extracted from bacteria. Its use is permitted in
some countries and regulated or prohibited in
others. It is used in artificial snow making systems
because of its cryogenic qualities, but its impact
on the environment - particularly the possibility of
bacteria being present in the snow produced and
changes to vegetation in snow-covered areas had never been properly investigated until now.
This is the result of a research programme conducted over the last three years in two Alpine
resorts (Valloire in France and Antagnod in the
Aosta Valley, Italy) by a team from Cemagref (the
French national research centre for agricultural
and environmental engineering in Grenoble)
studying the planting of vegetation to stabilise terrain in areas subject to erosion, and the plant biology, agricultural science, forestry and land management departments at the University of Turin. At
this seminar the two research teams will present
the definitive results of their studies of the impact
of Snomax on humans and the environment. In
France, 4,000 hectares of pistes in 185 ski resorts
are provided with artificial snow cover.
European
Mountain
Meeting
Seminar organised by ANEM in
Grenoble on 21 April 2004
The National Association of Elected Representatives
from Mountain Regions has taken the opportunity of the international gathering of mountain professionals at the SAM in Grenoble
to hold a discussion on mountain policies in the various countries of Europe.
Indeed, we must face the fact that our understanding of the reality of the situation in the
mountains varies widely around Europe. This is understandable in view of the fact that in
some countries (Germany and Sweden) mountains represent only a small part of the territory, whereas in other countries (France, Spain, Portugal and Italy) mountains cover between
a quarter and half of the country with a population of millions, and still other countries are
made up almost entirely of mountains (Austria, Slovenia and Switzerland).
But this objective difference does not explain everything. Countries in comparable situations
have different approaches to legislation. Furthermore, the European Union, which does not
have a specific mountain policy, has some influence on these areas through its agricultural,
regional and cohesion policies.
Working closely with the European Association of Elected Representatives from Mountain
Regions, ANEM has therefore decided to provide a roundup of the existing state of affairs
in European countries in order to draw up comparisons, summarise the situation and present its findings.
In addition to contributions from representatives from various European countries (member
states, accession countries, countries applying for EU membership and non-EU countries)
on the actual situation in their mountains and the policies in force, the day will include contributions from representatives from the European Commission, reporting on a study investigating the very concept of the mountains. For France, the delegate for land-use planning,
Nicolas Jacquet (subject to confirmation) or his representative, will provide food for thought
on the specific situation in the mountains and possibly also on the concept of land-use planning, which is itself perceived in different ways within the EU Council of Ministers.
This seminar will provide an opportunity for those working in the mountains in the new EU
member states to have a say on their ambitions, their projects and their requirements for
developing tourism and facilities in their regions. The professionals attending will be able to
listen to what they have to say and provide some specific answers to their questions.
If this seminar generates sufficient interest, this first meeting on mountain policies in Europe
may be followed up by a regular meeting justifying more in-depth study and comparative
discussion in order to set up a network for exchange and experience between local players.
It could serve as the starting point for a shared (and not uniform) doctrine leading to the
introduction of specific measures within the global framework of the regional and cohesion
policies within the EU, or even within some countries, whether they are EU member states
or not.
