BASWA – acoustics system
General information
The BASWAphon acoustic system is an innovative, mineral-based, patented modular product line designed for
controlling sound reverberation time. The system is
comprised of a pre-coated mineral fiber panel which is
glued on a hard surface (cement, plaster fiber panel) and
is then seamlessly coated with a micro-porous coating
mass.
The system is suitable for:
• level surfaces such as ceilings, floors
• arched and vaulted surfaces
• double-folded surfaces
BASWAphon technology provides architects and acousticians with new design possibilities thanks to the following characteristics.
•
•
•
•
seamless, smooth surfaces
exceptional sound absorption
minimal loss in room height
unrestricted color choice according to
Corbusier or NCS
• non-combustible
• sound absorbing cooling and
heating surfaces
Please visit our Internet address www.baswa.com which
will provide you with photos of several objects and design possibilities.
Systems
In order to satisfy a wide variety of acoustic and architectural requirements, four systems are available to you in
four different system strengths with a price-performance
ratio optimally suited to the various features and field of
application.

Acoustic features of the system’s thickness
The systems satisfy a variety of acoustic and architectural requirements. Which is why BASWAphon acoustic
systems are available in a system thickness of 30, 40, 48
and 68 mm.
We recommend consulting with an architectural acoustician for your specific dimensioning requirements. The
measured values are listed in the BASWA test report documents.
Acoustic design
For acoustic reasons, it can be an advantage to have increased sound reverberation in some of the ceiling fields.
This can be achieved by using sound-proof surfaces such
as cement chases, curtain walling or by closing the pores
on the supporting panel with a latex paint.
Due to the various degrees of material porosity and flow resistances, the level of soiling may vary during the course of
use, which cannot be avoided and which is why no claims
will be accepted in this regard.
On the next pages, you will be givan a system description of the following systems:
• BASWAphon – Classic
• BASWAphon – Base
• BASWAphon – Fine

Seamlessness
Taking into account the specific features of the ceiling
surface such as: shape of ceiling, material expansion,
possible sinking and/or deformation of the building’s
shell, up to 400 m2 of surface can be designed seamlessly with a corresponding shadow gap of approx. 1 cm.
We’d gladly be of assistance to you in finding the suitable solution to meet your specific needs. .

Product manufacturing / manufacturing quality
The quality of the surface greatly depends upon the care
that went into carrying out and adhering to the manufacturing instructions. BASWAphon ceilings are not merely
industrial creations, rather are handmade, quality objects
and therefore do not show any signs of irregularities, furnishing clear evidence of the fact that our products are
the result of high-quality craftsmanship.
Should the ceiling be exposed to extreme side light, minimal signs of unevenness in the smooth white plaster
surfaces may become visible. (In order to give you an
idea of the quality achieved on site, we would be pleased
to name several objects with side light).
Manufacturing is only permitted by employees certified
by the BASWA acoustic AG company.
Inexperienced contractors can receive a qualification for
installing the BASWAphon acoustic system by receiving
in-house technical training.
The different detailed solutions are also discussed during
training thus providing contractors with a high degree of
expertise in the manufacturing and consultation of the
product.
Partial soiling
Partial soiling such as nicotine stains, water and beverage stains, traces of chlorophyll, etc. can be carefully
removed by moistening the area with a 10% oxygenated
water solution. Please contact us should you be confronted with a case involving some form of damage.
Refreshing process
Any yellow or gray discoloration of the surface resulting
from normal use of the room can be refreshed by spraying the paint in the process of being prepared. This procedure can be repeated as many as three times.
Renewal process
When confronted with badly soiled surfaces, the last layer is removed and re-built. In order to do so, steam is applied to the BASWA surface for approx. 3 minutes with a
standard steam-cleaner used for household purposes.
After a brief saturation period, the BASWA Top layer (approx. 0.5 - 1.0 mm) is scraped off with a simple tool,
swept off with a clean broom and is newly applied.
Thanks to this rapid renovation process, the BASWAphon acoustic system is predestined for locations such
as restaurants, hotels, conference rooms, etc.
We’d be pleased to provide you with a current list of plaster contractors upon request.
Ceiling maintenance
Systems used to reduce reverberation time are based on
micro-porous surfaces where sound energy is transformed into heat. These pores may become soiled over the
course of time due to soot, nicotine or dust.
This may especially take place when the backside of the
BASWAphon ceiling forms a negative pressure. It is therefore particularly important to pay attention during planning that no pressure inclinations (location of the ventilation ducts, leakage) are formed between the cover’s
bottom and the massive ceiling.
The pores would also become clogged by a coat of paint,
which is why BASWA surfaces should under no circumstances be painted.
In order to uphold optimal acoustic characteristics and
optic requirements with respect to clean surfaces and/or
change in shade of color, BASWA’s construction principle
is based on enabling the system to be renewed at any given time.
Depending on the size of the object being dealt with, renewal can be carried out within 1 to 2 working days.

Color concept
In order to create colored surfaces, the coating mass is
dyed. In order to retain open-porousness, acoustically
effective surfaces may under no circumstances be covered in paint.
Most colors are available in the Corbusier color concept
or NCS color range. The special composition of the
coating mass limits the selection of the pigments and the
usable amount thereof so that we may not be able to honor all requests. Due to the open-porousness, variations
in lighting, angles of vision, the manufacturing process
chosen, a color may somewhat differ from the model.
Depending on the intensity of the desired color, the foundation coating may have to be dyed as well.
As is the case with other mineral systems, slight cloud
formation cannot be ruled out.
When dealing with bordering building components that
are the same shade of color as the BASWA surface, we
recommend painting them only after completion of the
BASWA component.
Illustration 3 Colors NCS
Vaulted, arched surfaces
When dealing with vaulted ceilings or surfaces with severe curves, the pre-coated mineral fiber panels are cut into
approx. 3/4 of the way and are carefully pre-bent and then
glued to the surface.
Do you have a specific color in mind? We’d be more than
pleased to send you a sample.
In case of radii of less than 0.5 m, we recommend constructing with an uncoated mineral fiber panel as a basis
which is then coated in three working stages (BASWAphon Fill, BASWAphon 407 and BASWAphon – Top).
Building management, work planning
The system is purely water-based. The drying process,
therefore, is not accelerated by hydraulically binding additional substances. This is why we estimate, with appropriate manpower, a minimum building time of 5 working days per surface.
Thanks to the supporting panels’ high degree of flexibility, not only can walls of simple vaults be developed, but
also cross-vaults and/or double-curved walls. Depending upon the appearance of the object, structured surfaces can also be developed as is the case with restorations of historically valuable buildings.
Generally speaking, smooth surfaces are difficult to repair, which is why the final coating ought to be applied as
late as possible during the building process. By doing
so, clients can minimize the risk of damage. Gloves
ought to be worn when putting applications on already
existing ceilings in order to avoid fingerprint marks.
Electrical, ventilation and plumbing installations as well
as any possible fastening devices are to be precisely determined and planned in advance. Contrary to a normal
smooth plaster ceiling, making corrections at a later point
is very costly.
Sound reverberation zones are planned by an acoustician and indicated prior to applying the foundation coating.
By applying the final coating as late as possible, mechanical flaws as well as soiling due to color, fingerprints,
etc. can be avoided.
Illustration 4 Exemple de cintre
Seeing to it that all involved in the construction are aware of the vulnerable nature of the final coating can help
ensure a problem-free process as well optimal end results.

Schallabsorptionsgrad as
General
Rightfully so, one of the biggest topics today is how our
environment is being treated and the sustainable protection thereof. A significant factor in this regard is surely
the amount of energy required for the air conditioning of
our living space.
In order to guarantee a lasting basis for our lives, we
must optimize the energy used and make use of alternative forms of energy.
The classic systems used in order to air condition buildings such as ventilating systems, static heaters, are often limited when it comes to providing a comfortable atmosphere using the least amount of space and energy
possible.

Capillary tube technology
Capillary tube technology provides new possibilities
in terms of environment. It is in tune with Nature: Waterbearing capillary tube mats made out of flexible synthetic
material are installed very close to the surface of the
space development surface, enabling mild temperature
equalization of the ceilings, walls or floors.

lead to the creation of our new BASWAphon – Cool
product.
System set-up
Capillary tube mats were glued onto the BASWAphon
supporting panels, were embedded and covered in two
stages, and in the end were covered with the desired final coating.
The BASWAphon – cool system can also be set up directly on a concrete ceiling or a suspended ceiling, as
well as slanted roofs and even in vaulted and arched locations.
However, due to the measurements of the water-supply
pipe, the system is only available in a system thickness of
approx. 53 and 73 cm.
We’d be more than pleased to be of assistance to you
during the planning process.
Function description
Thanks to the system’s large exchange surfaces, large
amounts of energy can be transferred without any
draught or noise, even in cases where the difference between the active room surface and the air is small.
Cooling
Depending upon the flow temperature, the surface temperature is approx. 19 °C at merely 2-3 K spreading between the flow (15°C - 17°C) and the return (17°C - 19°C).
When installed, up to 85 w/m2 refrigerating capacity can
thus be attained. Dew point thimbles steer the volume
energy and/or the flow temperature, thereby preventing
condensation formation.
Heating
In this case, the surface temperature is between approx.
27°C - 30°C. Therefore, skin surface temperature (32 °C)
is not exceeded, thus causing no physiological impairment.
Tests performed by Prof. Dr. Berned Glück have shown
that no loss in comfort is to be expected at a heating
capacity of 60 - 70 W/m2 based on radiation asymmetry.

Ceiling construction
Massive ceilings
BASWAphon acoustic systems have been tried, tested
and proven to be ideal for this application thanks to a minimal loss in ceiling height, the additional thermal insulation, the system’s seamlessness, all combined with exceptional acoustics.
When dealing with already existing ceilings (abrasion,
coat of paint), the adhesive strength ought to be determined in advance. Should it be less than 250 N/m2, the
background has to be strengthened by an insulation liquid suitable for the existing coating and/or an additional
mechanical fastening has to be placed on the glued supporting panels with BASWA metal clips.
Otherwise, the supporting panels’ entire surface is glued
on the dust-free and forming-oil-free cement ceiling with
the adhesive suited for the background. Casing offsets
larger than 3 mm have to be levelled out in advance.
Illustration 7 Additional mechanical fastening
(see drawing Z001)
Suspended ceilings
In order to avoid partial soiling of the surface and in order
to uphold the fire resistance class F30, the system requires a closed ceiling sub-structure. A standard suspended system made out of metal tracks can be used for the
sub-structure. Wooden sub-structures are not recommendable due to possible fissures as a result of longterm deformation.
As a suspension basis for the BASWAphon – construction, a solid, 12.5 mm plaster board or plaster fiber panel
covering ought to be chosen. (When constructing in humid rooms, such as swimming pools, the choice of substructure must be determined on the basis of building
physics.)
Illustration 8 System-set up of Classic suspended
In order to avoid partial soiling of the surface, the butt
joints have to be levelled out. If a pressure differential
over the ceiling application cannot be ruled out, a large
opening, which can be concealed with a loudspeaker
cloth, should be formed.
The surface of the suspended ceilings must be dry and
free of any dust particles. The pre-coated supporting panels are glued entirely on the smoothed plaster board
ceiling with a gypsum based adhesive. Additional mechanical fastening is not necessary.

Wall construction
Increasing mechanical stability by
incorporating a net
The BASWAphon acoustic system can also be used for
projection purposes, that is for overhead projectors, movie and slide presentations. The application of the system on walls is similar to ceiling application. As an alternative, a white synthetic reinforcement net can either be
partially or entirely embedded when the first foundation
layer is being applied (BASWAphon – 407). This helps increase system stability. However, additional reinforcement may cause absorption to be somewhat diminished.
Illustration 9
Wall construction
with reinforcement material
(see drawing Z023)
Increasing mechanical stability by means of
curtain walling
Maximum mechanical stability of specific exposed areas
can be attained by applying curtain walling
made out of mineral building material. This is then covered by the acoustically effective surface, thereby creating
a seamless wall. The transition region between the curtain walling and the BASWAphon supporting panel ought
to be reinforced with a net in order to prevent the formation of fissures.

Surface connections
Wall connection with severance strips
In order to prevent fissuring, all BASWAphon acoustic
surfaces ought to be separated from bordering surfaces
and objects in the vicinity such as curtain rod tracks, tubular feed-throughs, embrasures, etc. with a BASWA
tape joint.
In addition to what is shown on the diagram to the
right/to the left, the severance strip can also be cleanly
cut only after completion of the BASWAphon top surface.
Illustration 12 Wall connection with severance strips
(see drawing Z002)
Wall connection with a Swedish cut
Due to higher mechanical oscillations or expansion coefficients (with respect to air humidity), respectively, when
dealing with connections on dry walls or wooden walls,
we highly recommend choosing a 2 to 3 mm Swedish
cut.

Edge filling
Inserting edge protection
Untreated aluminum or metal profiles are not suitable for
filling edges. When using aluminum, for instance, gray
streaks may be caused by the abrasion when the coating
is being applied. Metal profiles may leave color residue
when applying thin layers.
In order to grant material homogeneity, we recommend
the use of BASWAphon synthetic edge protection profiles (BASWAphon – KS, Art.Nr. a027) when filling edges.
Illustration 15 Edge filling with BASWAphon KS
(see drawing Z012)
Edge filling with an angle section
In lieu of BASWA-KS, an appropriate angle section made
out of stove-enamel sheet metal, chrome steel or the
white synthetic material BASWAphon-end section can
also be used. This can be an advantage when having to
clean lateral air evacuation ducts or to provide protection
from mechanical damage.
Illustration 16 Edge filling with an angle section
(see drawing Z014)
Side filling with gypsum skirt
The side of light shafts are often covered with gypsum
plaster board. The diagram shows a suggestion for how
to fill the edge without making a severance. This calls for
optimal dry construction. In order to rule out any fissures
between the fiber panel and the bottom view of the ceiling, we recommend making a severance cut.

Hybrid systems/seamless surfaces
Massive hybrid systems
Although directly coating cement or plaster with
BASWAphon-Top virtually has no acoustic effect, it ought
to be taken into consideration for reasons of appearance.
These hard surfaces can, after applying an appropriate
primer (for plaster: water protection coat, for cement:
alkaline resistant proof coating) simply be covered with
the coating mass. Irregularities in the cement’s surface
can be smoothed out with BASWAphon Fill.
In the transition regions of the pre-coated panel, in order
to prevent fissures, an approx. 15 cm wide synthetic net
should be inserted. This net should be inserted with great
care so that at a later point, the surfaces, which will fade
differently, can be precisely separated by an approx. 1mm
thick cut and thus not interfere with the appearance.
Illustration 18 Massive hybrid systems
(see drawing Z011)
Suspended hybrid systems
For acoustic reasons (creation of a sound reverberation
surface), hybrid systems can also be used for suspended
systems, thus providing acoustic design within the room.
The points listed above also apply to this type of application.

Dilatations
Formation of expansion joints
When confronted with large surfaces, the formation of
dilatations may become necessary based on the specific
characteristics of the object in question and the work
sequence of the construction. When following the principle shown, no air circulation can take place in the vicinity
of the hollow space, explaining why partial soiling can be
ruled out.

Ceiling installations and constructions
Recessed lights
Openings for recessed lights can be made by means of a
carpet knife, crown bit or saw after completion of the final coating.
In order to conceal damage done to the edge during installation or maintenance, the masking ring should have
a width of a minimum of 1 cm. The lights have to be fastened to the solid background or substructure, respectively. We do not recommend merely laying installations
on the fiber panels.
If however recessed lights are installed with a narrow
masking ring or with a spring system, a metal case or a
BASWAphon installation platform (BASWAphon IP) must
be built in, in lieu of the elastic mineral fiber panel.
Illustration 22 Installation of recessed lights
BASWAphon-IP
(see drawing Z006)
All panel’s front faces, penetrations are to be hermetically sealed by means of a PE-band or a coat of gypsum
plaster board. By doing so, partial soiling, which can
take place as a result of panel airflow, can be prevented.
BASWA Installation Platform (BASWA – IP)
The BASWA-IP is used for recessed lights with bracing
springs, as a background for heavy objects such as surveillance cameras, fire alarms, loudspeakers, heavy ceiling lights, electric outlets, ventilation and plumbing installation openings, etc.
Thanks to the panel’s pressure-proof quality, there is no
risk of the edge breaking through, thus rendering the use
of a wide masking ring superfluous.
The BASWA-IP is comprised of an open-porous, pressure-proof panel, is calibrated according to the thickness of
the respective BASWAphon supporting panel and can be
delivered either with or without an opening cut-out.
BASWA – IP Standard:
150 mm x 150 mm for d < 90 mm
300 mm x 300 mm for 90 mm < d > 220 mm
Additional dimensions are available upon special request.
The platforms are fastened in advance on the existing
background (glued and then screwed to the background). Then, the supporting. panels are snugly pushed
onto the installation platform. Any remaining space is filled with BASWAphon-Fill.
Service openings
Standard products which can be adjusted in height
ought to be used for service openings. The cover is
coated with the foundation and cover coating and therefore has the same surface as the ceiling.

Miscellaneous
Incisions for cable and electric tubes
When dealing with a system thickness of 68 mm, electric
tubes can also be fastened to the ceiling and cut-outs
can be made on the reverse side of the supporting panels
accordingly. This can especially be an interesting alternative in the renovation sector. One must bear in mind,
however, that the tubes’ covering is at least 2 cm and
that the tubes ought to be tightly fastened to the ceiling
with wall clamps, without any sagging.
min. 2 cm
Cross-overs are strictly prohibited!
Illustration 23
Air flow with suspended ceilings
In order to rule out or minimize partial soiling through air
slits, the in-going or out-going air ought to be directed laterally towards the wall. Should this not be possible, we
recommend making sure that a constant small air exchange take place, preventing the creation of an air vortex. An air exit angle of 45 degrees greatly reduces the
degree of soiling.
Installation of cables and electrical conduit
(see drawing Z015)
open passage
Any risk of differences in pressure (between the installation area and indoors) can be prevented by inserting a
blind hole, which can be concealed, for example, with a
loudspeaker. The dimension thereof ought to be calculated by an ventilation or structural engineer.

Installation of sliding doors and the like
Large interruptions in the ceiling are to be separated and
separately fastened from the substructure. Here, too, we
recommend separating the ceiling by means of a severance strip.
Illustration 26 Installation of sliding doors
(see drawing Z004)
Installation of luminous band
Based on the lamps chosen, the fixture can either be fastened directly on the substructure or be fastened to the
suspended ceiling by means of expansion joints. The alternative illustrated shows the luminous bands without a
visible lamp socket.

General Conditions of Contract of the Baswa compa-nies
1. General
These General Conditions of Contract ("GCC") are valid for all services and supplies rendered by BASWAtherm AG and BASWAacoustic AG (hereinafter "Baswa") to a cus-tomer ("Customer"). Any contradicting conditions stipu-lated by Customer are not binding for
Baswa unless ex-pressly acknowledged by Baswa in writing. Baswa is
not obliged to oppose to such conditions explicitly.
2. Offers
Baswa's offers are always without obligation. Technical data, descriptions or illustrations of the products in offers, brochures or in any other information media shall not be deemed as representations and are
subject to unilateral changes by Baswa.
No warranty is given for the indicated quantities of average consumption of Baswa products. Customer shall immedi-ately examine calculations of quantity (extract of material) provided by Baswa. Customer
notes that no warranty is given for such calculations.
Contracts with Baswa shall be deemed concluded only upon written
confirmation of order by Baswa, latest with the de-livery of the products. The terms of the contract are as per the confirmation of order
or, in the absence of such con-firmation, the offer of Baswa.
Baswa reserves its right to modifications in technology, construction
or design, particularly for improvements, where reasonable for Customer, even after the confirma-tion of order.
3. Prices
Unless otherwise agreed upon, all prices are in Swiss Francs, excluding
Swiss VAT, packing included.
Unless otherwise agreed upon in writing, price calcula-tions shall be
based on the prices as valid on the day of de-livery.
In Switzerland all prices shall be deemed to be free building site if accessible to trucks; unloading is done by Customer. Delivery is made
on returnable pallets. Unreturned pallets will be charged by Baswa.
8. Complaints, Warranty
Warranty for defects is excluded except for the declared characteristics
of the products as set out in Baswa's product list. No warranty is given
for customised solutions (i.e. for products which are not enumerated
in Baswa's product list) and dyed coating compounds. Differences in
colour caused by the raw materials are no defects. Customer undertakes to examine the delivery immediately. Complaints due to incomplete, wrong or defective delivery shall be notified to Baswa immediately after delivery of the products, in any case within the following
eight days.
The liability of Baswa for defects in the sense of the foregoing section
shall be as follows:
Unless otherwise agreed upon in writing, the warranty period shall be
6 months from the delivery date.
Customer has to adhere to its contractual obligations in any case,
especially to the agreed terms of payment. Baswa is entitled to replace
defective products by a redelivery.
Annulment of the contract by Customer is inadmissible. Any warranty and liability is excluded if the products are not stored appropriately
and/or if Customer or any third party does not adhere to the application guidelines determined by Baswa, or if the proper due diligence as
a craftsman is not observed by Customer or any third party.
Any further claim of Customer towards Baswa or its auxiliary persons
is herewith excluded, in particular any claim for damages other than
for a damage to the delivered product itself. The amount of damages
is limited by the amount of the purchase price.
9. Returns
Baswa is not obliged to accept returns or to refund them. Returns are
however possible in exceptional cases if they are in good and original
condition. Refund for accepted returns amounts to 90 % of the value
of goods minus deduction for the costs of transportation. Baswa charges Customer with an expense allowance of CHF 30. Dyed products
can neither be returned nor refunded.
4. Terms of Payment
Unless otherwise agreed upon, all invoices are net payable within 30
days. In case of default in payment, Baswa is en-titled to charge an interest of 6 % p.a. for late payment. Save for the existence of an acknowledgement in writing or for a final judgement for any counterclaim of Customer, Customer is not entitled to make any off-set
against Baswa's claims. The goods remain property of Baswa until
they are completely paid.
10. Liability
Unless expressly provided for otherwise in the GCC, Baswa is only liable for damages which were caused with unlawful intent or by gross
negligence. Any liability for auxiliary persons of Baswa is hereby excluded.
5. Delivery date
Terms of delivery communicated by Baswa are fixed care-fully, but are
not binding. If delivery is delayed due to rea-sons not being attributable to Baswa, the terms of delivery are deemed to be observed if the
readiness for dispatch is notified within the agreed term. If delivery
becomes com-pletely or partially impossible due to force majeure or to
difficulties without a fault, Baswa is entitled to withdraw from the
contract. The same applies if such circumstances arise with subcontractors or suppliers. In such cases Cus-tomer is not entitled to damages or subsequent delivery.
12. Place of Jurisdiction and Venue
For all disputes arising out of or in connection with the GCC and the
individual purchase contracts concluded in the frame of the GCC the
exclusive place of jurisdiction shall be at Baswa's registered seat. Baswa
is, however, entitled to sue Customer in any other court which has jurisdiction over Customer.
6. Delivery
Baswa charges an additional freight for deliveries with a value of goods
of less than CHF 500. Unloading is done by Customer. Customer is
charged with costs of special trans-ports.
7. Risk of Loss or Damage
All deliveries including returns are at Customer's risk. The risk shall
pass from Baswa to Customer as soon as the delivery leaves Baswa's
storehouse or the storehouse of a third party operated by Baswa. If dispatch is delayed upon request of Customer or on grounds being attributable to Customer, the risk of loss or damage shall pass over to Customer once the readiness for dispatch is notified.
11. Place of Performance
The place of performance shall be at Baswa's registered seat.
13. Applicable Law
The GCC and the individual purchase contracts concluded in the
frame of the GCC shall be governed by the substan-tive laws of Switzerland.
The application of the United Nations Convention on Contracts for
the International Sale of Goods of April 11, 1980, is excluded.
