The front cover of the Ontario Special features the mature cow class winners at the
International Dairy Showcase. These 3 Ontario bred cows represent the Ayrshire breed very
well. They are strong producers, great show cows and two of them have been sold during
their lifetimes as people saw the potential in their pedigrees. These cows have embryos sold
to different countries. For more information on the junior and intermediate champions see the
IDS report and show results further in this issue.

Ce sont de fortes productrices, de superbes vaches d’expositions et deux d’entre elles ont été

We purchased Kamero privately as a calf from
her breeders Ken & Shirley Rose at the IDS in
2008. That fall she went 2nd prize summer
yearling behind the Junior Champion at the
Royal. She topped her year off as Reserve
All-Canadian. We took Kamero to the IDS this
year with intentions of letting the Ayrshire
world know she still existed. We feel we came
home accomplishing that!
Nous avons acheté Kamero privément comme
génisse de ses éleveurs Ken & Shirley Rose au
SIL 2008. L’automne suivant, elle fut 2e génisse
1 an été derrière la championne junior de la
Royal.

Nous voilà de retour après un voyage intéressant et éducatif
avec la grande Famille Ayrshire mondiale!
We are now back from an interesting and educational trip with
the Great Worldwide Ayrshire Family!
To begin, I wish to thank Linda for her 17 years of work, sharing her knowledge, her passion, her human contact and her
determination for our Ayrshire. Thank you and good luck in
the future.
Our industry changes rapidly around us: whether it’s the number of producers, breeders, suppliers, constraints of all sorts,
rules, environment, social, we must grasp the present situation
and turn it into an opportunity for our Ayrshire’s prosperity.
Pour commencer, je voudrais remercier Linda pour ces 17
années de travaille; pour avoir partager son savoir, sa passion,
son contact humain et sa détermination pour notre Ayrshire.
Merci et bonne chance pour l’avenir.

Informally, we have received many C.V.’s for the job to be
filled. We also had talks regarding our investments in TAG.
Ayrshire Quebec has also signed a new collaboration agreement with the CIAQ. The World Ayrshire Conference in South
Africa was a great success: farm visits, safari and marketing for
the Canadian delegation. Thank you to all the participants who
made it such an unforgettable experience.
À titre informel, nous avons reçu plusieurs C.V pour le poste
qui est à combler. Nous avons aussi eu des pourparlers au
sujet des investissements TAG. Ayrshire Québec a également
signé une nouvelle entente de collaboration avec le CIAQ. La
Conférence Mondiale Ayrshire en Afrique du Sud fut un grand
succès : visites de fermes, safari, marketing pour la délégation
canadienne. Merci à tous les participants qui en ont fait un
souvenir inoubliable.
We have two coming events, the picnics of Ayrshire Ontario
and Ayrshire Quebec. The Ontario picnic will take place on
July 28, following the Youth Week (see the ad). The Quebec
picnic will be held on August 18 including a sale of top genetic animals.
Deux événements sont à venir : les pique-niques Ayrshire
Ontario et Québec. Celui de l’Ontario aura lieu le 29 juillet,
précédé de la Semaine jeunesse (voir annonce p.5). Celui pour
le Québec aura lieu le 18 août et comprendra une vente d’animaux.

Holstein Canada Eastern Fieldman Chris MacLeod, and breeders
Larry & Wilma Park from Manitoba. After going through the formal
reading of the minutes and reports, the group had a great discussion on how our dollars are being spent. We were trying to decide
how to best use our advertising budget and where we would be
able to trim down costs.
Dave and Darryl gave their fieldmen reports, both saying they will
make a stronger effort to visit members as well as non-members.
Cynthia gave her Breed Improvement Committee report, and asked
Bernard to elaborate on a hoof trimming seminar he attended in
Maxville. Bernard said that more hoof trimmers are moving to a
computer software program that draws connections between sires
and hoof health. This would be a very useful tool for the breed to
use in tracking any potential problems in the future.
A lengthy discussion ensued on perhaps the biggest issue at
hand, Ayrshire Canada’s investment in TAG genetics and the
impending vote that was to occur the following day at the
National AGM. Henri Hofer and Andrew Shufelt handled the
questions and concerns of the breeders, and did a great job of
running through the different scenarios that could arise from
the vote. Between all of the Board members at the meeting,
they did a terrific job of explaining the position that we are
currently in, and what the potential outcomes could be. Being
that the breeders from Quebec had put forth a motion for the
National AGM, Bernard asked the Ontario breeders if they also
wanted to put forth a motion. A motion was made but was
defeated. Bernard asked that we move on, as the issue could
be discussed at greater length at the National AGM.
L’AGA a eu lieu à Ottawa, ON à l’Hôtel Lord Elgin le 1er mars 2012,
avec 21 membres et des représentants de l’industrie présents. En
plus de notre président, M. Andrew Shufelt, Linda Ness et Jenny
Henchoz, nous avions la chance d’avoir la présence du président
d’Ayrshire USA, M. Steve MacDonald, Claude LeRault de Phizer, le
conseiller de l’Est d’Holstein Canada, M. Chris MacLeod ainsi que les
éleveurs Larry & Wilma Park du Manitoba. Après avoir procédé aux
lectures des procès-verbaux et des rapports, le groupe a eu une
bonne discussion concernant la façon dont nous utilisons notre
argent. Nous avons tenté de décider comment notre budget de publicité pourrait être le mieux utiliser et où nous pourrions réduire les
coûts.
Dave et Darryl ont présenté leurs rapports de conseillers, les deux
disant qu’ils tenteront de faire un plus grand effort à visiter les membres ainsi que des non-membres. Cynthia a présenté son Rapport du
Comité d’amélioration de la race, et a demandé à Bernard d’élaborer sur à un séminaire sur la taille des sabots auquel il a assisté à
Maxville. Bernard a mentionné que les tailleurs de sabots se tournent de plus en plus vers un logiciel informatique afin d’établir l’habileté des taureaux à transmettre de sabots en bonne santé. Ceci
serait un outil très utile pour la race afin de localiser tous problèmes
potentiels à l’avenir.
Une longue discussion s’est amorcée sur probablement la plus
grande question du moment; l’investissement d’Ayrshire Canada
dans Trans-America Génétiques et le vote imminent qui devait survenir le lendemain à l’Assemblée générale annuelle. Henri Hofer et

ont fait un bon travail à
expliquer les différents
scénarios qui pourraient
découler de ce vote.

du Conseil présents à la
réunion, ils ont tous fait

ils se trouvent présentement, et ce que pourraient être les conséquences potentielles.
Puisque les éleveurs du Québec avaient présenté une résolution
pour l’AGA nationale, Bernard a demandé aux éleveurs de l’Ontario
s’ils voulaient présenter une résolution. Une résolution fut présentée,
mais défaite. Bernard a demandé de poursuivre, puisque le problème pourra être discuté plus profondément à l’AGA nationale.
Bill Hampson, Darryl & Harold Smith travailleront ensemble à tenter
de fournir la paille pour la Foire agricole Royale d’hiver à nouveau
en 2012. En tant que Club, nous supportons financièrement ce projet chaque année, et cette année nous aurons aussi le support financier de la South Western Ayrshire Club.
Dave a mentionné les visites du samedi qui débuteront à 9h30 à
Sunnymead Farms, où le dîner sera servi à l’église de Vernon avant

to donate straw for the Royal Winter Fair again in 2012. As a club,
we do financially support this venture each year, and this year we
will have financial support from the South Western Ayrshire Club as
well.
Dave mentioned that the tours for Saturday will start at 9:30 at
Sunnymead Farms, and lunch will be served at the
church in Vernon before heading to Tilecroft Farms.
Bernard mentioned that the GDS Spring Showcase
Sale would be March 26 and invited everyone to
attend. The meeting adjourned at 12:18 and we
departed by bus for Rosayre for lunch and a tour.
We spent the afternoon viewing the heifers that are
going to be auctioned off at the National banquet
the following evening and enjoying the hospitality
of the Rose’s.
We topped off the night with a terrific banquet at
the aviation museum. James Cotton was awarded
the Ayrshire Appreciation Award, and we presented
our All Ontario and Production Awards. Thank you
very much to Norman Boswall and all who organized this fantastic
event. Thanks also to Ken & Shirley for hosting the sale animals,
and for opening their barn for all of us to tour. The organization is
only as strong as its members, and we definitely have a lot of members with a lot of heart and dedication.

nous avons présenté nos prix AllOntario et de production. Merci

tous ceux qui ont participé à l’organisation de cet événement fantastique. Merci aussi Ken et Shirley
Rose pour nous avoir reçus pour la
vente d’animaux, et ouvert ses
portes pour une visite de ferme.
L’organisation est aussi forte que le sont ses membres, et nous avons
définitivement énormémement de membres qui ont beaucoup de
cœur et de dévouement.

GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP / GRAND CHAMPIONNAT
The 9 edition of the International Dairy Showcase was held on April 12
and 13th in Saint-Hyacinthe. There were a large number of visitors, surely
you were there too! The International Dairy Showcase is the most important coloured breed show in Eastern Canada. It is made possible thanks to
the collaboration and team work of the Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Canadienne
and Jersey breed associations joining together to create an unique event
that attracts more and more visitors from one year to the next.

La 9e édition du Salon International Laitier se tenait les 12 et 13 avril dernier
à Saint-Hyacinthe. Les visiteurs étaient nombreux et sûrement que vous y
étiez vous-mêmes! Le Salon International Laitier représente la plus importante
exposition de races colorées de l’Est du Canada. Elle est rendue possible
grâce à la collaboration et au travail d’équipe des associations de races
Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Canadienne et Jersey qui s’unissent pour créer un
événement unique qui attire d’année en année de plus en plus de visiteurs.
Le coût d’envoi des activités a été donné ce jeudi 12 avril dès 15 h avec la
tenue de la Vente Élite de printemps. La vente des 27 sujets Ayrshire de
grande qualité a permis d’atteindre une moyenne très respectable de 3 774 $.
Le plus haut prix de la vente est revenu à Du Petit Pont Love-ET consignée
par François Phoenix de Saint-Eulalie au Québec. Félicitations à Mario et
Maxime Henderson et Frances Simard pour l’acquisition d’une exceptionnelle
Femelle 2 ans junior pour la somme de 9 200 $. C’est la sœur propre de
Lessard Calimero Lorelli TB-88 qui a obtenu le deuxième plus haut prix de la
vente. Lessard Calimero Lorelli 2, une superbe Génisse Intermédiaire, a été
acquise par la Ferme Jean-Guy Faucher et Fils de Sainte-Marie-de-Beauce au
Québec pour 7 500 $. De tels résultats révèlent l’engouement pour la race
Ayrshire et lui offrent une place enviable sur les scènes locale, nationale et
internationale.
INTER CHAMPIONSHIP / CHAMPIONNAT INTER
The activities were launched on Thursday April 12th at 3:00 p.m. with the
Elite Spring Sale. The sale of the 27 Ayrshire high-quality animals made it
possible to reach a very respectable average of $3,774. The highest price of
the sale was paid for Du Petit Pont Love-ET consigned by François Phoenix
of Saint-Eulalie in Québec. Congratulations to Mario & Maxime Henderson
and Frances Simard for having purchased an exceptional Junior 2-year-old
female for the amount of $9,200. She is the full sister to Lessard Calimero
Lorelli VG-88 who obtained the second highest price of the sale. Lessard
Calimero Lorelli 2, a superb Intermediate Heifer, was purchased by Ferme
Jean-Guy Faucher et Fils of Sainte-Marie-de-Beauce in Québec for $7,500.
Such results show the keen interest for the Ayrshire breed and offers scope
for an enviable place on the local, national and international scenes.
The success of the 2012 Ayrshire Elite Spring Sale surely rests on the quality of the animals offered for auction but also on the work of the management and animal preparation team. It is also essential for the Québec
Ayrshire Society to take a few moments to gratify the excellent work of the
team with which Alexandre worked during the week of the sale: Angèle
Hébert, Pascale Daoust, Pascal Bourgault, Dale Macfarlane, Marie-Pier
Allard, Éric Bilodeau, François Rioux, André Richard, Richard Ferland, Neil
Kittle, Janie Côté, Mireille Cloutier, Patricia Fontaine, Francis Roberge, Linda
Ness and Yves Charpentier. Without you, the sale would certainly not have
been the same. A special word of thanks to Bruno Soucy for his support
and his presence!

L’édition 2012 du Salon International Laitier s’est poursuivie avec la présentation du jugement ce vendredi 13 avril. Le jugement Ayrshire a présenté 117
sujets de qualité exceptionnelle. C’est à François Beaudry de Granby au
Québec qu’est revenu le privilège d’être juge officiel de la journée. C’est avec
brio qu’il a accompli sa tâche. Il a accordé le titre de Championne Junior à
Chaluka Nemo Xioli ET, première Femelle 1 an senior, propriété de Ferme
Charest (2001) Inc. devant Vieux Village C Henriette, première Femelle 1 an
intermédiaire, propriété de Florent, Vicky et Bianca Foley et Sablière Oblique
Astéroide, deuxième Femelle 1 an intermédiaire, propriété de la Ferme
Sablière 2007 Inc. Le titre de Championne Intermédiaire est revenu à Bonnie
Brae Phoenix ET, propriété de Ken et Shirley Rose devant Terrace Bank Elana,
propriété de Terrace Bank Farms Inc et Élégance Distinction Sheila, propriété
de la Ferme Élégance Inc. et de la Ferme Distinction. Les grands honneurs de
la journée ont été remis à la première de la classe Vache adulte, Lombard Dale
Wilton Icing, propriété de la Ferme Bavaroise ainsi que Charpentier, Roberge
et Alholm. Icing a reçu la rosette de la Grande Championne devant Rosayre

The 2012 edition of the International Dairy Showcase continued with the
judging presentation on Friday April 13th. The Ayrshire show featured 117
individuals of exceptional quality. It was François Beaudry of Granby in
Québec who had the privilege of acting as the official judge for the day,
and he did it extremely well. He awarded the title of Junior Champion to
Chaluka Nemo Xioli ET, first Senior 1-year-old Female, owned by Ferme
Charest (2001) Inc., ahead of Vieux Village C Henriette, first Intermediate
1-year-old Female, owned by Florent, Vicky & Bianca Foley, and Sablière
Oblique Astéroide, second Intermediate 1-year-old Female, owned by
Ferme Sablière 2007 Inc. The title of Intermediate Champion went to
Bonnie Brae Phoenix ET, owned by Ken & Shirley Rose, ahead of Terrace
Bank Elana, owned by Terrace Bank Farms Inc and Élégance Distinction
Sheila, owned by Ferme Élégance Inc. and Ferme Distinction. The top honours of the day were given to the winner of the Adult Cow Class, Lombard
Dale Wilton Icing, owned by Ferme Bavaroise as well as Charpentier,
Roberge & Alholm. Icing received the Grand Champion Rosette ahead of
Rosayre BB Rebel, second Adult Cow, owned by Ken & Shirley Rose of
Mountain in Ontario and Rosayre BB Kamero, first 5-year-old Female,
owned by Paul Hampson of Woodstock in Ontario. The full results are

Again this year, the cheese-tasting booth allowed for visitors and exhibitors
attending the judging day to discover a delicious cheese, the Tremblay,
from Fromagerie l’Autre-Versant, owned by Stéphane Tremblay and
Chantale Lalancette. A huge thank you to the cheese dairy for these products!
De retour cette année, le kiosque de dégustation de fromages a permis aux
visiteurs et exposants présents lors de la journée du jugement de découvrir
un délicieux fromage, le Tremblay, de la Fromagerie l’Autre-Versant, propriété
de Stéphane Tremblay et Chantale Lalancette. Un gros merci à la fromagerie
pour ces produits!
The CIAQ Zone allowed for the breeders to benefit from the genetic counseling provided by the employees of the organization. They were present
throughout the event to answer the breeder needs and to advise them in
their choice of bulls. Again this year, Ayrshire breeders could purchase
semen on site with several percentage discounts. Also, CIAQ launched a
new sire: Faucher Homerun, son of Faucher Loto Opa EX-96 2E, several
times All-Canadian nomination, out of one of the top type sires in the
Ayrshire breed: Mapleburn Remington. Do not hesitate to use this sire as
he will certainly be an improver for several individuals in your herd. Many
thanks to CIAQ for supplying these services that were greatly appreciated
by both exhibitors and visitors.
La Zone CIAQ a permis aux éleveurs de profiter des conseils génétiques des
employés de l’entreprise. Ces derniers étaient présents tout au long de
l’événement afin de répondre aux besoins des éleveurs et de les conseiller en
matière de choix de taureaux. Encore cette année, les éleveurs Ayrshire pouvaient se procurer de la semence sur place avec plusieurs pourcentages de
rabais. De plus, le CIAQ a fait le lancement d’un nouveau taureau : Faucher
Homerun, fils de Faucher Loto Opa EX-96 2E, nominée plusieurs fois AllCanadian, par l’un des meilleurs taureaux en conformation de la race
Ayrshire : Mapleburn Remington. N’hésitez pas pour faire l’utilisation de ce
taureau car il sera certainement améliorateur de plusieurs sujets dans votre
troupeau. Un gros merci au CIAQ pour ces services qui ont été très apprécié
autant des exposants que des visiteurs.
This event could not have happened without the work and the support of
the breed association, the generous sponsors and mainly the exhibitors
who work relentlessly year after year in order to promote the Canadian
Ayrshire. The exhibitors must be proud of this event where their breed was
well represented and resulted in an excellent showcase for our Canadian
genetics. In short, proud Ayrshire breeders, together we have once again
proven that the breed can compete, even with other breeds. Let’s get
together on April 11th and 12th 2013 for the 10th edition!

It was with fond memories that the 50 Canadian participants
returned home from the World Ayrshire Conference that took place
in South Africa. Many participants stayed for the 3 weeks of activities that were very interesting, day by day.
C’est avec plein de souvenirs mémorables que les 60 participants du
Canada sont revenus de la Conférence Mondiale Ayrshire, qui a eu
lieu en Afrique du Sud. Plusieurs de ces participants sont demeurés
pour les 3 semaines d’activités, qui jour après jour, était toujours des
plus attrayantes.
After two days of rest in Sun City the participants entered into the
Conference ambiance beginning with the activities related to the

La troisième partie fut consacrée uniquement à des safaris au
Botswana ainsi qu’a une journée passée au Zimbabwe où nous
avons pu admirer les magnifiques et imposantes Chutes Victoria.
Cinq courageux Canadiens uniquement, mentionnons le, ont su
profiter de ces chutes de 108 mètres de hauteur et plus de 1700
mètres de largeur pour vivre des sensations fortes en sautant en
Bungie du célèbre pont des chutes.

To complete this Conference section, what would be better that a
beautiful “lesson in life”…..Dr. Wayne Derman, specializing in
sports medicine who had the honor of working with the South
African para-olympic team came to share the beautiful experience
he had while he lived with these athletes.
The third part was uniquely reserved for safaris in Botswana as well
as a day in Zimbabwe where we admired the magnificent and
imposing Victoria Falls that measure 108 metres high and 1700
metres wide! Only five courageous Canadians (only Canadians),
took advantage of the situation by Bungie Jumping these meter high
falls for a thrill from the famous Falls Bridge.

The African’s generosity, breathtaking sceneries and diversity of
land were only a few points that rendered this trip so perfect.
Exceptional farm visits where the cows are at pasture year round
giving us a glimpse into different methods of business management
such as Anton Homsek’s herd, Lamprecht, Riaan Reynders, Far
View, Kevin Lang, Rhodes Food Group, Maan Kotze, Robert Blom,
Jan Wessels & Alec Muller. It was with great pride that they showed
us how they work and manage their business in their country.
