BACKGROUND:
Originally from Rockland, a small town near Ottawa, Jean-Nicolas (Nick) Carriere,
the youngest of three brothers was always involved in organized sports during his
youth. At the age of 14, he moved with his family to the Ottawa suburbs. It was at
that age he was approached by his math teacher to play football for his new school,
St-Matthew’s. Upon graduation Jean-Nicolas was awarded the honor of Mr. Football
Academic of Ontario.
Jean-Nicolas attended McGill University on athletic bursary, provided by the Donald
E. Meehan Intercollegiate Football Award. During his tenure at McGill, he was
named Captain of the Redmen football team in his junior year, and remained so
until graduation. During his four years at McGill, Jean-Nicolas was the recipient of
many awards, including the Montreal Shrine Bowl MVP and Top Defensive Player
award. Two-time recipient of the Willie Lambert Trophy awarded to the team’s
defensive MVP, and was also awarded the Friends of McGill Most Dedicated Player
award two years running. In his senior year, Jean-Nicolas was drafted 21st overall
to the Toronto Argonauts, of the Canadian Football League, and finished his degree
at McGill between CFL seasons, earning a B.A. degree with a double major in
Industrial Relations and Sociology. Having only played in two seasons, Jean-Nicolas’
professional career was cut short by a shoulder injury he suffered in the off-season.
After a lengthy year of recovery, and having entered in the workforce at the height
of the financial recession, it was difficult to find work that was truly fulfilling.
Dealing with a loss of identity, and a realization that his elite athletic career might
well be over he was ready to throw in the towel. But, the intangible that brought
him much athletic success in the past started to burn bright again and Jean-Nicolas
found within himself a newfound motivation, and a new goal; to try and compete in
the upcoming Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. After a year of hard work, training, and
getting back into shape, Jean-Nicolas tested in an athlete identification camp for
bobsled Canada in Ottawa and managed a performance worthy of an invitation to
train with the National Canadian Bobsled Team in Calgary, Alberta.

Jean-Nicolas packed his bags and set out for Calgary as soon as he could and began
training with the National Canadian Bobsled Team in the spring of 2012. Having
been officially named to the National Team in the fall of 2012, Jean-Nicolas is
heading into his first World Cup season to slide for Canada, and is one step closer
of reaching his ultimate goal, of competing in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic
Games.
After his athletic career comes to an end, Jean-Nicolas would like to go back to
school and earn a Master’s degree in Economics and work in a related field.
Outside of bobsleigh, Jean-Nicolas engages in public speaking at high schools, and
is also involved in helping French students in the Montreal area learn English
through an interactive learning program as he is a very proud bilingual FrancoOntarian and knows the advantages of being able to speak both National languages.
PARCOURS DANS LE SPORT :
Originaire de Rockland, une petite ville près d'Ottawa, Jean-Nicolas (Nick) Carriere,
le cadet de trois frères, participe aux sports d'équipe depuis la très jeune
enfance. À l'âge de 14 ans, lui et sa famille ont déménagé en banlieue d'Ottawa.
C'était à cette époque que son professeur de maths l'a encouragé à jouer au
football pour sa nouvelle école, St-Matthew’s. Au moment de la remise des
diplômes, Jean-Nicolas a reçu le prix de «Mr. Football Academic» de l'Ontario.
Jean-Nicolas a reçu une bourse sportive de l'Université McGill, intitulée la Bourse
Donald E. Meehan de Football Interuniversitaire. Pendant ses années à McGill, il a
été sélectionné chef d'équipe de football des Redmen dans son année junior, et il a
gardé ce poste jusqu'à la fin de ses études de premier cycle. Au cours de ses
quatre ans à McGill, Jean-Nicolas a récolté bon nombre de prix et de mentions, dont
JPU du Shrine Bowl de Montréal, et Meilleur Défenseur. Lauréat à deux reprises du
Trophée Willie Lambert de meilleur défenseur de l'équipe, il a aussi récolté le Prix
du Joueur le plus Assidu des Amis de McGill et ce, pendant deux années
consécutives. Dans son année senior, Jean-Nicolas s'est vu repêché 21e à l'équipe
des Toronto Argonauts de la Ligue Canadienne de Football, et il a fini ses études à
McGill entre saisons LCF; il a complété un diplôme B.A. à double majeure en
Relations Industrielles et Sociologie. Ayant joué seulement deux saisons, JeanNicolas a vu finir sa carrière de football professionnel à cause d'une blessure
d'épaule subie en saison morte.
Après un long rétablissement d'un an, et étant entré dans le milieu de travail à
l'apogée de la récession financière, il se débattait pour trouver un emploi vraiment
satisfaisant. Se sentant en manque de repères et conscient du fait que sa carrière
d'athlète d'élite était probablement terminée, il était prêt à se résigner à une vie
sans le sport. Mais la qualité intangible qui lui avait procuré tant de succès dans les
sports dans le passé s'est rallumée et Jean-Nicolas retrouvait un nouvel élan et un
nouvel objectif: concourir aux Jeux Olympiques d'hiver de Sochi 2014. Après un an

de travail dur, d'entraînement et de reprise d'un programme de conditionnement,
Jean-Nicolas s'est présenté à un camp d'identification de talent pour le bobsleigh à
Ottawa, et la qualité de sa glisse lui a mérité une invitation à s'entraîner avec
l'équipe canadienne de bobsleigh à Calgary, Alberta.
Jean-Nicolas a plié bagages et est parti pour Calgary aussitôt que possible et il a
commencé à s'entraîner avec l'équipe canadienne de bobsleigh au printemps, 2012.
Ayant été officiellement sélectionné à l'équipe nationale en automne, 2012, JeanNicolas aborde sa première saison à représenter le Canada en Coupe du Monde, un
pas en avant vers son objectif ultime, à savoir concourir aux Jeux Olympiques
d'hiver 2014 à Sochi.
Après qu'il aura pris sa retraite du sport, Jean-Nicolas aimerait reprendre ses
études et compléter une maîtrise en économie, puis faire carrière dans ce domaine.
À part le bobsleigh, Jean-Nicolas prononce des discours dans les lycées et il fait du
bénévolat en aidant les étudiants francophones en région montréalaise à apprendre
l'anglais dans un programme interactif. Il est fier d'être Franco-ontarien bilingue, et
il connaît et apprécie les avantages que procure le bilinguisme au Canada.
