Introduction T he Teens in Spirit with Art exhibition provides students at Mountainview School, a last resort school for adolescents, with a venue to showcase their artistic talent. Students have the opportunity to develop personal and professional skills by creating and displaying their artwork. Various media such as drawing, painting, sculpture, poetry, and multi-media are included in the exhibition. The goal of this event is to provide youth with the opportunity to: increase selfreliance and decision-making; self-esteem, self-confidence, social contact, and mutual support; as well as build a sense of community belonging and open teens’ eyes to their own potential through exposure to the visual arts. Mountainview students had the privilege of attending workshops at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) part of the MMFA’s sharing the museum program. The Workshops were open to all interested students. With the guidance of a Museum educator the students appropriated the gallery spaces and explored the world of art and how it affected them. The visits were followed by practical workshops where the youths worked on themes that emerged from the art works that inspired them. They experimented with a variety of techniques and materials – including clay, paint, printmaking, and mixed media. The students were offered the option to select or create certain works for public viewing. In these retrospective works, the artists present us with face-to-face, compelling, evocative expressions of experience and reveal thought-provoking portrayals of their impressions and inspirations. The Teens in Spirit with Art Program is funded by the CIBC’s Miracle Childrens Foundation. In this kingdom lies a sword created by the five Gods themselves. The name of this great and uncontrollable power-hungry sword was Soul Caliber. It was so evil that the Demon Gods locked it away in the middle of the kingdom because they say whoever wields this sword shall become the King of Darkness as well as have total domination over the world. The young boy desperately wanted Soul Caliber. He knew that in order to get it he had to take out the kingdom’s demon guards as well as pass through the great labyrinth and last but not least kill the five headed dragon of chaos. This would be a death wish for most young warriors but this boy was not just a boy he was the Prince of Darkness and the sword was made for him so nothing could come in his way. He finally reached the gates where he noticed two huge warrior demons-like statues. He touched the gate and was catapulted backward by and electrical force. At that very moment the statues came to life and started to attack the Prince. The Prince leaped into the air and punched one of the demon warriors with all his might and crushed him into a million pieces. The Prince continued fighting the other demon. Meanwhile, in a planet known as Zentianecro a young Zentian named Ecnirp desired great power and total domination. This power was denied to him because his planet was already rule by a great king. Ecnirp was told if he had travel to planet Earth that he would find a tool great enough to kill his king and rule his world. Therefore he transformed himself into a sphere-like object and with a burst of light disappeared into outer space. While soaring through millions of miles of space he passed through a nuclear fusion supernova event. This nuclear fusion reacted with his body chemistry and affected his ability to fly. His body began to melt. After an hour of drifting in outer space Ecnirp froze instantly like molten lava touching cold ocean water. Back on earth the Prince got past the last demon guard and he was making his way through the labyrinth. At that moment a five-headed dragon jumped out of the wall of the maze and attacked him. He jumped onto the dragon’s back and rode him to the middle of the kingdom. The dragon was unaware of his presence and therefore ended up bringing the Prince right to the very place he wanted to be. The Sword! While the dragon was asleep the Prince slew the dragon, the only way to kill this kind of deadly beast. Finally he was standing before his heart’s desire, Soul Caliber. He reached out to touch the sword where he sensed a curse was placed. At that moment he was transported to Tatokimoo with Soul Caliber grasped firmly in his fist. This island was created by the Gods as a penal colony. All the deadliest criminal minds of the kingdom were banished here. The only way to escape was to find the meaning of goodness. This, for most of the people there was an impossible feat. 25 Months pass and the Prince took over the island and wiped out every prisoner. While he was in deep thought he looked towards the horizon and saw a spark of light coming toward him. The light seemed to be getting brighter and closer as he watched. Then he realized that the light was on a collision course heading straight for him! He jumped out of the way and at that very moment there was a rainbow explosion which left him unconscious. Sometime later he opened his eyes to see a human standing in front of him. He could sense that even though the creature looked human something was different. The creature then spoke. It said, “Hi, my name is Ecnirp. I have traveled a great distance in search of something. I seek a tool which is very important to me. Can you help me find it?” The prince then said, “If I help you, you must help to free me from this curse. Can I count on you?” Ecnirp agrees and they set off together. As they walked and talked the prince realized that Ecnirp was not like him. He inquired where Ecnirp was from. Ecnirp told him he was from planet Zentianecro which was 200 billion light years away. The prince was extremely interested. He had never met someone from Zentianecro before. He decided to trust his instinct and befriend this strange visitor. They had come out of the forest and were nearing the shore of the sea. The prince could smell the salt in the air and feel the spray of mist on his face. At that moment a woman’s scream pierced the silence. Ecnirp ran in the direction of the scream and the prince had no choice but to follow. When they reached the water they realized too late that it was a sirens song. They had been tricked by a leviathan! Its tentacles reached out from the water with lightning speed. The gnarly black suckers on the long arms grabbed the prince and threw him into the air like a juggler tossing a ball. Ecnirp stood alone on the beach facing the giant beast. His eyes turned pitch black and an eerie green glow surrounded him. The prince, still being toyed with, spotted this transformation and felt the energy emanating from his companion. He watched as Ecnirp grew long spikes from his back, a huge spiny tail, enormous claws and giant angel-like wings. He approached the fiend and reached out with his mighty claw. He plunged his limb into the creature’s heart and instantly the prince was released. He fell to the beach unharmed. He watched as the monster was shredded by Ecnirp’s colossal strength. As he lay watching the prince realized that there was more to this visitor than he first thought. He had hidden strength and was without fear. Once the leviathan was defeated Ecnirp resumed his original form and walked up the beach to where the prince lay. He was smiling to himself. The prince watched in astonishment. “He looks as if he had fun,” the prince mused to himself. He decided he liked this guy. 26
