BURAK ARIKAN WITH ANALIX FOREVER IN LONDON & PARIS
Burak Arikan, born in Turkey in 1976, is one of the most astonishing creators of
numeric images. Indeed, and in contrast to numerous pioneers of new media art,
who use computers and internet as a source of inspiration, a technique or and
exhibition space, Burak Arikan, who was trained at MIT and a student of John
Maeda, creates programs. The artist then uses these programs to explore the world,
social relationships, political and economical realities and the links between them
and within them, as well as to create images, images altogether fascinating, vertiginous, esthetic and poetic. The representations of social, artistic, institutional,
conceptual networks become mysterious constellations; the « Network Map of
Artists and Political Inclinations » (Berlin, 2012) seems to include, besides the
multiples constellations, beyond the moon, the Milky Way…
Invited by curator Kathleen Forde, Burak Arikan will present Büro at the Moving
Image Art-Fair in London, in October 2012. With this title that seems evocative of
administrative work and tidiness (büro meaning “office” in several languages), but
in reality this title was chosen according to one of the many musical collaborations
that Burak Arikan is fond of, the artist shows us a novel representation of Chaos.
All the elements form the environment appear to float towards a « black whole »
that irreparably draws them like a moving magnet. While expecting to see his own
« büro » snatched by the forces of chaos and swallowed up by itself, the visual result, while hypnotic, is also sensual and carnal and evokes the female body. These
impressions of Burak Arikan’s dynamic chaos then become « Instances » of grace.
Technically speaking, in the visual software, two light circles (invisible for the
viewer though essential for the program) draw and attract to their center all surrounding elements and while moving these circles randomly, the animation develops, evolves and changes endlessly.
Burak Arikan obtained a Master in of Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Laboratory and is henceforth a Faculty Member at the Tisch School of Arts, New York University, where he contributes to the teaching of Interactive telecommunications.
Burak Arikan has been invited in Paris by Gaité Lyrique en 2011, at the Berlin
Biennial in 2012, and is one of the seven international artists nominated for Nam
June Pike Award 2012.
BURAK ARIKAN WITH ANALIX FOREVER IN LONDON & PARIS
June Pike Award 2012.
