Lettre du Président
La 30ème Conférence de la SISR à Saint-Jacques de Compostelle (27-31 juillet 2009)
sur Les défis du pluralisme religieux est entrée dans sa phase très active de programmation
comme vous pourrez le découvrir dans ce Réseau 34. M‟étant rendu sur place avec le
Secrétaire Général en novembre dernier, nous avons pu constater que l‟Université de SaintJacques de Compostelle offrait des conditions d‟accueil, de travail et de séjour tout à fait
agréables et fonctionnels pour notre prochaine conférence. Je tiens à remercier très
chaleureusement Juan-Luis Pintos et son équipe pour le travail déjà accompli (et celui qui va
suivre !) pour que notre prochaine conférence se déroule dans les meilleures conditions.
Laissez-moi vous dire, chers amis de la SISR, que la capitale administrative et culturelle de la
Galice réserve bien de bonnes surprises. Ville reconnue comme « patrimoine de l‟humanité
par l‟UNESCO », Saint-Jacques de Compostelle a bien des atouts pour attirer non seulement
le pèlerin, mais aussi le touriste, le voyageur, l‟écrivain, l‟artiste et l‟homme de science. Le
métissage et l‟ouverture à l‟international façonnent à bien des égards cette ville tout aussi
appropriée pour recevoir des sociologues en congrès - y compris des sociologues des
religions ! - que les traditionnels pèlerins. Et pour une société bilingue anglais-français
comme la nôtre, quoi de plus approprié que d‟emprunter, comme le font les pèlerins, la voie
anglaise du nord ou la voie française de l‟est pour y parvenir ? Sans oublier, bien sûr, les
voies portugaise et espagnole du sud et du sud-est. La langue espagnole sera évidemment
présente à côté de l‟anglais et du français en séance d‟ouverture (avec traduction), et mêlée à
l‟anglais et au français dans quelques sessions thématiques.
A Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, nous serons aussi nombreux et peut-être encore plus
nombreux qu‟à Leipzig qui avait déjà battu un record. Qu‟on en juge : le programme que
Karel Dobbelaere a concocté avec sa vigilance et son attention habituelles - qu‟il en soit
vivement remercié ! - compte plus de 500 auteurs de communication qui se répartissent en
180 séances, la plupart des 78 sessions thématiques ayant dû être doublées ou triplées. En plus
de ces 78 sessions thématiques, notre 30ème conférence accueillera 4 groupes de travail, 5
sessions de Nouveaux/ Nouvelles Chercheurs/Chercheuses et 7 séances « auteurs face à leurs
critiques ».
Pour la première fois, des collègues venant de certains pays d‟Afrique (Algérie,
Cameroun, Ghana, Ethiopie, Zimbabwe….), et de certains pays d‟Asie (Bangladesh, Chine,
Malaisie, Vietnam, …) participeront à une conférence de la SISR qui s‟affirme ainsi de plus
en plus comme une société internationale à l‟échelle du monde. Bien sûr, les collègues de la
péninsule ibérique et de l‟Amérique Latine seront bien représentés, Saint-Jacques de
Compostelle oblige.
Parmi les nombreuses sessions thématiques, permettez-moi de remarquer d‟abord celle
portant sur les pèlerinages pédestres et celle portant sur les destinations religieuses et
touristiques de pèlerinage (cela s‟imposait !). Ensuite, plusieurs sessions sont, à partir d‟aires
culturelles diverses, en lien direct avec le thème de la conférence Les défis du pluralisme
religieux. Enfin, des champs d‟études originaux ou que l‟on peut saluer car la recherche
sociologique qui leur est consacrée n‟est peut-être pas encore suffisamment développée :
religions et Internet, le monde religieux orthodoxe, religions et laïcités au Vietnam,…On
retrouve également dans le programme de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, des sessions jointes
de la SISR avec d‟autres sociétés scientifiques (ISA, AISLF, RRA, ACSRM, ISORECEA,
…)1.

Pour terminer, je voudrais insister sur le respect des délais pour le paiement de votre
cotisation et l‟inscription à la conférence : ceci facilitera le travail de notre Trésorier JeanPierre Hiernaux toujours aussi dévoué à sa tâche pas toujours facile. En juillet 2009, notre
Trésorier et notre Secrétaire Général arrivent à la fin de leur mandat. Karel Dobbelaere qui,
depuis de nombreuses années, a mis son intelligence, son efficacité et son dévouement au
service de la SISR, souhaite passer la main. Faites-lui plaisir en respectant scrupuleusement
ses consignes : c‟est la dernière conférence SISR qu‟il prépare comme Secrétaire Général !
Qu‟il puisse se dire : la 30ème ce fut la meilleure, tout le monde a bien coopéré dans les
grandes comme dans les moins grandes choses ! Le moment venu, je lui exprimerai au nom
de vous tous notre profonde reconnaissance pour tout ce qu‟il a fait pour la SISR. Mais, pour
l‟heure, votre président s‟active pour lui trouver un(e) successeur qui sera élu(e) à SaintJacques. Au moment de rédiger cette lettre, je peux tout simplement vous dire qu‟une solution
est en vue.

pour vous informer et
pour vous permettre de vérifier :
- si votre proposition apparaît effectivement dans le programme (un problème de courriel
ou un effacement accidentel peut toujours se produire) et si elle apparaît dans la (les)
bonne(s) session(s)
- si votre proposition est correctement présentée (il peut y avoir des erreurs de frappe)
vérifiez particulièrement les adresses électroniques
- si toute l‘information requise est donnée (n‟avez-vous pas oublié de fournir la traduction
du titre de votre papier en anglais; votre appartenance institutionnelle et/ou votre adresse
électronique manquent peut-être)
- si dans l‘horaire, p. , il n‘y a pas de chevauchement entre les différentes sessions
auxquelles, lors d‘une plage horaire spécifique, vous participez à l‘un ou l‘autre titre :
orateur, discutant, président (avec l‟aide de Mme Van Meerbeeck, j‟ai vérifié au mieux
mais certaines choses ont pu nous échapper). Bien qu‟il était clairement spécifié dans le
précédent Network/Réseau que « Chaque participant ne peut présenter qu‟une seule
communication » et que le président d‟une session devait être choisi au sein de celle-ci, plus
de 20 % d‟entre vous n‟ont pas respecté ces règles, ce qui, malgré tous nos efforts (un travail
de deux jours à deux personnes) a rendu très difficile et parfois impossible d‟éviter certains
chevauchements. Si vous repérez un chevauchement vous concernant, veuillez chercher à
résoudre ce problème avec les organisateurs des sessions concernées (changer la séquence de
présentation, renoncer à un papier,..)
Veuillez m‘informer de tout éventuel changement ou correction avant le 15 janvier 2009
en m‘envoyant à l‘adresse suivante [email protected] un courriel
mentionnant, selon le cas, le numéro de la Session Thématique (T), du groupe de travail
(WGT) ou du Forum des Nouveaux Chercheurs (NRF) concerné ou en indiquant si ces

Statement of Purpose:
The academic study of religion occupies an ambiguous place within the humanities and social
sciences. Characterized by a distinct interdisciplinary tenor, the study of religion initially emerged as a
critique of the failures and limitations of the theological sciences to explain and understand human
behavior. As this critique matured, the innovative scholars of the past turned to the established
disciplines for insight and legitimacy: anthropology, history, philology, sociology, etc. Borrowing from
these disciplines has contributed much to the success and the institutional viability of the study of
religion. Yet, in spite of this success, we find that the methods and theories within these disciplines
have often been developed and incorporated into the study of religion in an unreflective way,
preserving ideological prejudices that hinder our understanding of human behavior and its potentials.
As a response, our book series aims to develop a sustained interdisciplinary project with the express
purpose of articulating a body of critical research on religion.
The purpose of this book series is to provide a venue for scholars engaged in critical research on
religion. Our aims include studies contributing to our understanding of how religious institutions and
religious thinking may simultaneously serve as a source of domination and progressive social change.
We seek to analyze the historical and economic conditions giving rise to religious systems while
recognizing that religious ideas can be motivational and therefore dialectically related to material
conditions. We aim to understand more precisely the role of religion within social and political conflicts.
These conflicts are often based on ethnic, racial, and regional differences, which have political and
economic inequity as crucial factors. As with most disciplines, a critical perspective recognizes that its
own historical continuities lie within the confluence of numerous religious, political, and philosophical
traditions. Critical reflection does not reject this intellectual heritage but critically self-reflects on its
relationship to it.
This book series invites proposals and submissions of monographs and edited volumes from scholars
across all academic disciplines. These include but are not limited to theology, religious studies,
sociology of religion, anthropology of religion, psychology of religion, history, political science, and
philosophy. Works can use a wide range of methodologies, including quantitative, qualitative, and
historical. While encouraging works to be theoretical driven by a critical perspective, it is particularly
interested in empirical research which is theoretically guided by interdisciplinary concerns.

The programme probes the current condition of religion in Europe against the background of
European secularism and the re-kindling of religious activity brought about by the political
and social changes in Europe of the past thirty years.
The ten innovative and methodologically varied projects take a look at the significance of
religion in contemporary social life, as well as exploring the social and cultural impacts of
recent religious growth points, such as Pentecostalism and Islam.
Quantitative studies analyse data from the major social surveys conducted over the past ten
years to examine whether religion has re-emerged as a social force, how much has changed,
how much is religion still in decline, how far have new migrant groups transformed or merely
refreshed the picture.
Qualitative projects involving ethnographic, visual and othe methodologies, look at the detail
of religious activity through empirical and theoretical research, exploring issues concerning
gender, transnational processes, the politics of religious cultures, new forms of religious
expression and many other dimensions of contemporary relevance.
The Programme was launched in March 2007 and will continue through 2010.

ANNOUNCING THE 2009 TAYLOR & FRANCIS SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION POSTGRADUATE
ESSAY COMPETITION
The British Sociological Association Sociology of Religion Study Group is now inviting entries for the
2009 Taylor & Francis Sociology of Religion Postgraduate Essay competition.
We welcome essays from postgraduates at all stages of their studies on any aspect of contemporary
religion grounded in a sociological perspective. The prize for the winning essay is £100 and, subject to
undergoing the usual refereeing process, it is hoped that the winning essay will be published in the
Journal of Contemporary Religion.
Essays should be between 5000 and 7000 words, and should be submitted electronically as a single
MS Word document to Kristin Aune ([email protected]), including bibliography and cover sheet
(which can be downloaded from the Study Group website). The deadline for submission is the 27th
February 2009, and entries can be submitted at any time between now and then.
The winner of the competition will be announced at the Study Group's Annual Conference Dinner in
Durham (30th March to 1st April 2009). If you are not already a member of the Study Group, you will
need to join prior to submitting an essay.
If you are a member of staff, please download a poster to display on your departmental notice board
and encourage your postgraduate students to submit essays. If you are a postgraduate this is great
opportunity to work towards an early publication on your thesis topic, or a chance to explore another
