MCA-UGT ex-General Secretary, has passed away

Le camarade Manuel Fernández López, "Lito" Ex Secrétaire General
de MCA-UGT et actuel président de la Fondation de MCA-UGT, AG-Fitel, est décédé ce
matin à l'hôpital central des Asturies, à Oviedo.
Travailleur Arcelor Mittal (la précedénte Ensidesa), a commencé sa carrière syndicale en
tant que secrétaire de la section syndicale de l'UGT dans l'usine de Veriña (Asturies), un
poste qu'il a également joué plus tard dans l'Union régionale de l'UGT-Gijón et l'Union
régionale UGT-Asturies. Pendant dix ans, il a été secrétaire général de la même. Le 22
Octobre 1988, il a été nommé secrétaire général de la Fédération nationale du fer et de
l'acier de l'UGT, poste auquel il a été réélu dans les congrès de 1990, 1994 et 1996. Par la
suite, lors du Congrès de fusion entre les fédérations de métal et Fédération de construction
et du bois UGT, en 1998, a été élu secrétaire général du MCA-UGT, Fédération de
l'industrie, dont la responsabilité a été désigné jusqu'à ce que le Congrès fédéral 26 à
Burgos du 2 au 4 Octobre 2013, quand il a été élu président de MCA-UGT.
Il était vice-président de la Fédération européenne des métallurgistes (FEM), appelé
aujourd'hui IndustriALL Europe et membre du Comité Executive de l’International des
métallurgistes (FIOM) aujourd'hui IndustriALL Global Union. Il a aussi été conseiller
d'Aceralia, Arcelor et Arcelor Mittal.
Il a été membre du Comité Exécutif de la Fédération Socialiste régionale Asturienne et
député régional du PSOE en Asturies par le PSOE ainsi que membre du Comité Fédéral du
PSOE.
Dans le 26 Congrès fédéral MCA-UGT, qui s'est tenue à Burgos en 2013, a été élu
Président de MCA-UGT.
Le Comité exécutif fédéral de MCA-UGT regrette profondément la mort de notre ami et
accompagne avec douleur à sa famille et ses collègues qui ont partagé avec lui de
nombreuses années de militantisme et de lutte syndicale.

The Federal Executive Committee and all UGT colleagues express their condolence to his family
and friends
Our colleague Manuel Fernández López “Lito”, ex- General Secretary of MCA-UGT and President of
AG-FITEL Foundation, has passed away today’s early morning in Hospital Central in Oviedo (Asturias).
He worked in ArcelorMittal (former Ensidesa) and began his union career as Secretary for
Organizational issues in UGT of the Veriña factory (Asturias). He continued this responsibility at local
level in UGT Gijón and UGT Asturias. There he was General Secretary during ten years.
On October 22nd 1988 was elected as General Secretary for the Federal Metalworkers of UGT,
reelected on 1990, 1994 and 1996. Later on, caused by the merger Congress between Metal
Federation and Construction, Wood and Allied Federation of UGT, he was elected as General
Secretary of MCA-UGT, Industry Federation, and reelected during the following congresses for this
responsibility until the 26th Federal Congress celebrated in Burgos on October 2-4th 2013. On that
Congress he was elected as MCA-UGT President.
He was Vicepresident of the Metalworkers’ European Federation (EMF), today’s IndustriAll European
Trade Union, and Vicepresident of Metalworkers’ International Federation (IMF), today’s IndustriALL
Global Union. He was also member for the Board in Aceralia, Arcelor and Arcelor Mittal.
He was member of the Executive Committee in the Asturian Socialist Federation and PSOE regional
deputy for Asturias during two terms in office and member of the PSOE Federal Committee.
In the 26th MCA-UGT Federal Congress held in Burgos in 2013, he was President of MCA-UGT.
The MCA-UGT Federal Executive Committee deeply regrets the death of our colleague and shares
family’s pain and the pain of the colleagues who shared with him so many years of unionism fight.
