THE STORY
Nadine and Franck Renouard set off to the Petite Camargue to meet Pierre-Marie
Brisson, the painter, in 2000. As lovers of wine and contemporary art, they fell in love
with the area, and happened to stumble upon an estate that turned out to have
unexpected potential...
Luck quickly gave way to organisation as the couple had the estate scientifically
assessed, revealing a terroir similar to that of Châteauneuf du Pape, with the same
climate as found in the southern Rhone Valley. They soon realised they had stumbled
upon a diamond in the rough.
With the help of a young oenologist, Stéphane Beuret, the Renouards transformed
their few hectares of vineyard into an ambitious, innovative business, the Domaines
Viticoles Renouard. In 2003, their Cartesian approach paid off and the domain’s first
fine wine was born. Its name: Scamandre.

VALUES
SCAMANDRE, A CARTESIAN WHIM
The talent of the founders of Scamandre lies in their Cartesian approach when
working with the vine.
As the label suggests, the vine is cultivated by experts to produce a unique and highly
original Rhone Valley wine.
This continuous quest for innovation is accompanied by keen environmental
awareness. The entire winery is designed with harmony in mind, from the modern
architecture which blends into the landscape to the treatment plant which returns
only the purest water back to nature. Energy-efficient facilities meeting carbon
footprint standards are planned for 2015. However, the land is already worked by
draft horse and only the exact amount of natural fertiliser required is used. The price
to pay for such perfectionism is low yields, between 20 and 30 hl per hectare.
2
The sample drillings the Renouards had done for the initial soil survey showed that
the Scamandre vineyard lies on an 18 meter deep layer of rolled pebble stone and
clay that naturally controls the soil's water content. It enjoys a special microclimate,
permanently warmed by the southern sun, stroked by Mistral and refreshed by the air
from the nearby pond. But nature alone is not enough. Each vine plant is examined
and tended to 7 or 8 times a year.

SCAMANDRE, AN ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY ESTATE
The vineyard is currently composed of 17 hectares with trellises reaching 2 metres in
some plots, and a 1000m² winery. It is a contemporary, ultramodern building that is
nonetheless extremely well-integrated into the surrounding countryside. Situated in
the middle of the Petite Camargue, 30km south of Nîmes and a protected natural
area, the wood, glass and stainless steel building blends completely into the
landscape.
It includes a cutting-edge fermenting room and an underground cask storage cellar.
The building’s design is based on the wine-making process, allowing most transfers
to be done using gravity, which means better preservation of the crop. The cask
storage cellar is built beneath a water tank so that the temperature can be kept under
better control in summer. This is an ancient Egyptian method.
The whole team at Scamandre is intent on respecting the environment. A main
treatment system treats our waste water for three months, oxygenating then filtering
through two reed beds, allowing it to be returned to nature as pure as drinking water.
Our water supply comes from an 80m deep well adjacent to the Perrier® water
spring. The water we use for cleaning and rinsing all our barrels and vats is entirely
free of contamination and couldn't be purer.

SCAMANDRE, THE IMPORTANCE OF DETAIL
Attention to detail is our team motto. Our yields are low (20 to 40 hectolitres per
hectare). The total production was 27,000 bottles in 2004, but only 22,000 in 2007.
We harvest by hand and transport the grapes in cold storage to ensure perfect
control of their fermentation. Our stainless steel vats are heat controlled.
The cask storage cellar is underground. Above it, there is a water tank providing
natural temperature control. The cellar is equipped with a misting system to
preserve the ideal moisture content in the atmosphere and bring down the ambient
temperature by a few degrees. Thirty percent of our barrels are new. Their capacity
and heating are fixed at the end of the fermentation process, depending on the
grape variety.
Our vines are grown organically, and we have reduced fertiliser amounts by 60% in
the last three years. Tilling the soil in our vineyards means that we don't need to
use weed killer. We have introduced draft horse work on some of our plots. We
want tractors to gradually disappear from the estate. In 2009, we planted our estate
with other varieties of trees and plants to improve biodiversity.
The average age of the vines is 40 years.
Our yields are between 25 and 40 hectolitres per hectare.

Wines
SCAMANDRE RED…
Year in, year out, the delicious flavour and complexity of our red wine is the result of
a careful combination of grapes from well-established vines. Syrah gives structure,
whilst Vieux Carignan provides tannins and fruit. Mourvèdre completes the blend with
a hint of spice, and the roundness of Grenache adds the finishing touch. The vines are
all grown organically (no insecticide, weed killer, etc.). The whole harvest is carried out
manually using small 10 kg crates. The wine is aged in barrels of 1 to 3 wines
originating from Véga Sicilia. After ageing for 18 months, all the barrels are tasted
and less than 50% of the harvest will be selected to make Scamandre
Production: around 15,000 bottles per vintage.
Four grape varieties are cultivated to create the unique character of Scamandre Red:
-
Syrah provides flavour and forms the basis of the blend, with notes of truffle,
blackcurrant and raspberry.
-
Vieux Carignan gives opulence and aromatic complexity.
-
Mourvèdre surprises with spicy notes, liquorice, cinnamon, leather and pepper.
-
Grenache gives roundness and sweetness.
SCAMANDRE 2007
Appearance: deep red with hints of purple.
Nose: red fruits, spices and bramble.
Flavour: full-flavoured, intense, smooth flavour development.

SCAMANDRE GRANDE RÉSERVE 2007
The exceptional Grande Réserve de Scamandre is only produced in important
vintages. Only grapes from the most-established Carignan plots (older than 60 years)
of the highest quality can be used in the Grande Réserve. The land is only worked by
plough and no mechanical equipment can be used on these vines. Obviously, yields
are low (around 25hl/ha). Wines are aged for 18 months in 30% new barrels. The
2007 vintage is exceptional for the Southern Rhône valley. Grande Réserve is an
explosion of aromas and flavours, and highly complex. It is a wine that ages incredibly
well.
Production: 1000 bottles.
Appearance: dark in colour, almost black.
Nose: concentrated, fine aromas, black fruits and toasted, spicy notes.
Flavour: silky with intense richness of flavours.
SCAMANDRE DRY WHITE 2009
This surprising Chardonnay is the main varietal at Scamandre. It is rarely used in the
southern Rhône valley. However, very good Chardonnays used to exist in southern
Europe on red clay soils. We planted our plot 5 years ago, in the coolest part of the
estate, on red and grey clay soil. Scamandre Chardonnay has proved to be
remarkable, and yields are always very low. Our Chardonnay forms the basis of
Scamandre white, and in 2009 we added Marsanne and Rousanne to the blend to
bring even more complexity to the wine. Fermentation takes place in barrels using
natural yeasts.
Production: 1200 bottles produced.
Appearance: bright yellow colour with silver sheen.
Nose: flowers and white fruits initially, then, after airing, toasted and brioche notes
come through.
Flavour: the complexity of flavours is balanced by the liveliness and freshness of the
wine.

SCAMANDRE WHITE “VENDANGES D’AUTOMNE” 2008
Only 5hl/ha using Muscat à Petits Grains are produced. The grapes are harvested
three times in order to create an exceptional dessert wine with a perfect balance of
flavour, acidity and sweetness. Grapes are harvested before full maturity to give
acidity, at maturity to provide fruit and when over-ripened to provide sweetness. With
around 200 grams of residual sugar, Scamandre dessert wine is as good as the best
sauternes.
Production: 900 half bottles produced.
Appearance: golden.
Nose: explosion of floral aromas, citrus fruit, pineapple and dried apricot.
Flavour: the balance of sugars and acidity gives a complex, attractive wine.

SCAMANDRE ROSÉ 2009
This wine should theoretically not exist. It is made from an ancient, revered grenache
(80 years old). Using this early varietal for a final time to produce rosé revealed its
enormous potential. The vine only produces 7.5hl/ha, and the juice is obtained using
a small pneumatic pressing machine. Vinification takes place in barrels of 2 wines and
yeast is naturally present. Two months are needed for complete alcoholic
fermentation, and ageing gives this wine the characteristics of the great white
burgundies. The wine is bottled after 4 months ageing. It begins as transparent and
the colour develops to a pale pink.
Production: 1200 bottles produced.
Appearance: pale pink.
Nose: white peach and white flowers.
Flavour: perfect balance between freshness, liveliness and roundness.
