PRESENTLY ENROLLED IN EARLY FRENCH IMMERSION

Dear Parent/Guardian:
Procedures and guidelines for registration of pupils for a French Immersion program in the 2017-2018 school
year are now determined.
Siblings (brothers and sisters) of children presently enrolled in a Surrey School District Early French
Immersion class (up to and including Grade 6) will be given priority for registration in the same program at
the same school until 3 p.m. FRIDAY, January 13, 2017 ONLY. Registration may take place
IMMEDIATELY upon receipt of this letter in person at the schools listed below, during school hours (please
see reverse side for documentation that is required).
After 3 p.m. FRIDAY, January 13, 2017, sibling registration is no longer guaranteed.
Children already in the program do not have to register again.

Documentation
The following documents are required at the school when registering:
1. Proof of birth date for the student (birth certificate or passport).
2. Proof of guardianship (as shown on child’s birth certificate, or other appropriate legal
documentation such as landed immigrant document or guardianship order).
3. Proof of residence (e.g., ordinarily resident) of parent/guardian in BC:
a. BC driver’s license, BC Services Card, BCID or BC Care Card of parent/legal guardian; or
b. A combination of other supporting documentation such as a passport, permanent residency card,
ownership/long-term lease of dwelling, vehicle registration, employment within community, Canadian
income tax record, etc.
4.Proof of student’s living address (purchase or rental agreement, utility bill, driver’s license, etc.).*
* Sullivan Heights Secondary, Woodward Hill Elementary, Goldstone Park Elementary, Cambridge
Elementary and Sullivan Heights Elementary are subject to additional proof of living address
requirements. Three pieces of ID showing address, one of which must be government issued,
must be presented in order to complete the registration process.

GRADE 7 BAND CONCERT
MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2016 @ 1:45pm
Our grade 7 students will have their first band concert on Monday, December 12, 2016 @
1:45pm under Mr. Lord’s direction. All parents are welcome to attend this concert. No tickets
necessary.
HOLIDAY CONCERT
Célébrations de la saison/A Season To Celebrate
Grade K – 6 Students
Tuesday, December 13 - Dress Rehearsal – 1:00-2:15pm
Wednesday, December 14, afternoon performance – 1:00-2:15pm
Wednesday, December 14, evening performance – 6:30pm – 7:45pm – TICKETS REQUIRED
We will have two performances of the Christmas concert. Due to limited seating capacity and
fire safety regulations, we ask that only parents attend the evening performance. A maximum
of 350 tickets will be issued, on a first come basis. Siblings and other family members are
welcome to attend the 1:00 pm performance on December 14 or the December 13 dress
rehearsal (space limited as the students will watch the performance) TICKETS WILL BE ISSUED
FOR THE EVENING PERFORMANCE ON DECEMBER 14TH. (Maximum 2 TICKETS PER FAMILY
MEMBERS) Additional tickets may be issued the day before the concert if we have left overs.
Please check at the office. Please fill out the form below if you require tickets. There will be a
cash donation box in support of the Surrey Christmas Bureau at the door.

Update on B.C.’s New Curriculum from Education Minister Mike Bernier
November 29, 2016
Dear Parent,
The world is changing and B.C.’s new curriculum is critical in making sure your child is connected with the
skills he or she needs to succeed in this changing world. We have just announced important updates on B.C.’s
new curriculum – on how it will be implemented in grades 10-12, and on the Foundation Skills Assessments
(FSA) written in grades 4 and 7.
Grade 10-12 curriculum implementation
Teachers, principals and trustees asked for more time to work hands-on with the redesigned draft curriculum
in grades 10-12 – and we agree. The extra time means teachers can try out the draft curriculum and provide
feedback before it is fully implemented in the 2018/19 school year. The new curriculum is already fully in
place in the earlier grades.
The extra year makes sense because the graduation years are more complex than the K-9 years. They are tied
to provincial exams. They are connected to post-secondary choices. We are making sure that we get the
Grade 10-12 redesigned curriculum right for students, ensuring their future success in post-secondary and
the workforce.
When it comes to provincial exams, we have mapped out which old exams and new exams will be written
and when. The most important thing is that new or old, our standards remain high, testing remains rigorous,
and combined with in-class exams we will be thoroughly testing student knowledge. Detailed exam

Foundation Skills Assessments
Along with our new curriculum, we are enhancing our Foundation Skills Assessment that students in Grades 4
and 7 are required to write under B.C.’s School Act. The FSA measures reading, writing and math problemsolving skills that students have gained over several years of learning and provides critical information for
parents, for teachers, and for the education system.
Starting next year, students in grades 4 and 7 will complete their FSAs in the fall instead of the spring. This
means you and your child’s teacher will get results earlier – and that means any necessary actions can be

Additionally, we will be giving parents like you a snapshot of the FSA results in broader school reports. You
deserve to know how your child’s school is succeeding on a variety of fronts – and we will include that
