US Marines Aim For Jammers On „Every Airplane‟

With the rise of high-tech threats from
Russia and China, the Marine Corps
plans a major increase in its forces
devoted to jamming, hacking, and
deceiving enemies. That includes:
- putting new sensors and jammers in
everything from ground units to drones to
V-22 Osprey tiltrotors and KC-130
transports, despite a tight budget;
- adding 1,000 to 3,000 more personnel,
carved out of other parts of a Marine
Corps legally limited to 182,000 activeduty troops. (That’s on top of a 1,300plus increase in these specialties over
the last several years);
- retraining skilled electronic warriors
from
disbanded
EA-6B
Prowler
squadrons to work with ground units and
drones;
- consolidating disparate disciplines—
from offensive cyber warfare and
electronic warfare to psychological
operations and military deception— into a
new “information warfare” force.
The changes are part of a top-to-bottom
overview of the Marine Corps ordered by
Commandant Gen. Robert Neller. That

Lacking the funds to purchase new
and bespoke maritime patrol aircraft,
two Latin American militaries are
looking to extend the life of their
current fleet of legacy Lockheed
Martin P-3 Orion aircraft.
The torturous development process of
the A400M transport plane has been
extended yet again after Germany’s
Defense Ministry admitted that it had
been hit more technical problems. Its
latest delivery date is now in doubt.
Chile and Brazil have operated the
sub-hunting aircraft for a number of
years now and, not wanting to lose the
vital capability offered by the P-3, are
in the process of upgrading. The
Chilean Navy has already contracted
Lockheed Martin to upgrade its fleet of
two P-3s, as part of a mid-life upgrade
(MLU) package, which involves
refitting the aircraft with a new centre
wing section and outer wings, as well
as new horizontal stabilisers.
Germany’s list of military equipment
calamities was extended once again
on Friday, when the country’s biggest
newspaper reported that the new
European transporter plane, the
Airbus A400M Atlas, had faulty
engines.

characteristics, the P-3 Orion is prone
to corrosion and fatigue, particularly
on the areas close to where the wing

The “Bild” newspaper reported that
parts of the propeller engines could
not cope with extreme temperatures
and that individual parts of the engine
were found to have “material flaws.”
The newspaper also claimed that one
engine on a British A400M had cut out
during a flight, though this had not yet
