Document A
A. During the voyage, Mr Fonseka spends most of his time in his cabin. He stays at his desk (lines 23 “he sat at his desk all day”) and wonders how he will teach literature in England (line 3
“thinking what he could say about them”). When the narrator comes to visit him, he often reads
stories to him (line 13 “”he would at some point begin reading to me”) or recites passages from
books to him (line 2 “passages from all kinds of books he could recite by heart”). He also smokes
a lot as his cabin is described as smoky (line 12 “that smoky room”).
B. Mr Fonseka seems to be kind as we can read line 4 “he welcomed me”. He is captivating for he
tells him “unusual and interesting stories” (line 4) or because line 20 the narrator says that Mr
Fonseka “beguiled them as well”. He is serene about his future as the narrator underlines his
“serenity” (lines 23 and 24). Eventually we can say he is knowledgeable because “he knew
passages from all kinds of books he could recite by heart” (line 2).
C. The narrator visits Mr Fonseka because
- 3. Mr Fonseka’s stories fascinate him as shown by lines 13 and 14 “It was the anonymity
of the stories and the poems that went deepest into me”.
- 4. Mr Fonseka is interested in the narrator’s life as we can read line 20 “he made me tell
him of our adventures on the ship”.
D. Mr Fonseka’s goal is likely to have a prestigious career. FALSE

Document B
E. The two characters go to the cinema/movies together. That’s the way they have found to see each
other discreetly. They are engrossed in the films they see so we can deduce that they are fond of
movies. Then they seem to meet in order to escape from real life.
F. Pembe, the female character seems more captivated by the film than he is. Indeed he keeps
looking at her, smelling her perfume, touching her hand. He is even jealous of the fact that she is
more interested in Charlie Chaplin than in him.
G. At the moment when the lights came back on, she comes back to real life. She no longer can le
him touch her hand (someone might see them) or stay with him so she flees, she quickly goes
away from the cinema.
H. Elias likes the fact that Pembe is
- 1. attractive as shown by lines 28-29 “this unfathomable, almost enigmatic attraction that
he felt for her”
- 3. different from him as we can read line 29 “a woman so alien to the life he had led”
I. They chose places that are distant from their homes because they must have wanted not to be seen.
One of them (or both) may be married or something may prevent them from dating.
Documents A and B
J. To begin the characters are almost strangers. The narrator from text A knows Mr Fonseka only
because they travel on the same ship. In text B Elias doesn’t know much about Pembe who he gets
to know little by little (lines 26-27).
Then, they start talking about art : literature in text A and cinema in text B.
Finally, art is a way for them to escape from real life. Indeed in text A Mr Fonseka has his books
and thus doesn’t need to leave his cabin and in text B the 2 characters find a place to hide when
they go to the cinema.
K. Mr Fonseka has his knowledge of literature to offer to the narrator while he offers him his
adventures on the boat with his friends.
Elias offers Pembe a way out of reality as she is engrossed in the films they go to see. Similarly
Pembe makes Elias escape from his routine as she makes him remember his childhood.
L. 1. In text A the narrator seems younger than Mr Fonseka and is less educated/learned than him.
In text B real life may be an obstacle to the characters’ relationship.
2. These activities allow them to discover something new, something different from their real life :
either art (literature or cinema) or another lifestyle (the other character’s lifestyle).

- Pembe writes in her diary about her special relationship with Elias.
Attention de respecter la mise en forme du journal intime. Bien utiliser le pronom « I ».
Il fallait ici développer les sentiments du personnage : sa fascination pour le cinéma mais
également ses doutes et craintes quant à leur relation.

How can differences between people enrich their relationships ?
On pouvait penser ici à plusieurs types de différences : culturelles, sociologiques, d’éducation ou
même de goûts en matière de musique, de films, …
Celles-ci permettent l’échange, la discussion, la confrontation d’idées et au final la découverte et
l’apprentissage de la différence, du respect de l’autre.

Art brings people together. Discuss.
Des personnes d’horizons très différents peuvent se retrouver face à un tableau, une pièce de
théâtre ou encore une sculpture et se rendrent compte que leurs sentiments sont les mêmes. D’où
une certaine universalité des émotions.
Pour d’autres œuvres, il peut s’agir d’un message qui touche et rassemble : la dénonciation d’un
crime par exemple (Guernica).
