Department Biol. & Environ. Sc. Doha Qatar -Program coordinator of the Master of Science in Environmental Sciences -Skills development: In the department, we first of all tried to improve and update the basic skills of the technicians interested in our research topics. At least 2 technicians are now able to carry out research independently.. -Research programs: As a team, we started a research program in Microbial and Environmental Biotechnology: -Production of Bioactive Molecules and compounds not polluting for the environment: antibiotics, fungicides, bioinsecticides, ... -Bio-Degrade Polluting Molecules and compounds. In the frame of Qatar vision 2030 for a sustainable Qatari Environment, our action plan consisted in establishing and setting up a microbial gene bank. In the first stage, a culture collection of more than 500 strains of Bacillus thuringiensis, a friendly biopesticide producing bacterium, has been set up. These biopesticides will be developed towards a sustainable Qatari and Gulf Environment free from chemical pesticides. So, this collection is being used for several projects but will be useful in term of research opportunities Master, PhD, postdoc,… but also industrial opportunities .. We have started in parallel another project dealing with the isolation of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria… We have now a strain that can grow and degrade 70% diesel… 6 Another NPRP project will start on December 2011 : Mycosafe: Control of food-borne mycotoxins in Qatar Research grants: Since 2010 -QU Internal grant QUUG-CAS-DBS-09/10-7: Apr 2010- March 2012 PI: Prof Samir JAOUA -QNRF-UREP 08 - 077 - 1 - 012: 2011: PI: Prof Samir JAOUA -QNRF- UREP 09 - 019 - 1 : 2011-2012: PI: Prof Samir JAOUA -Student Grant- QU- OAR- QUST-CAS-BES-10/11-3 – 2011 : PI: Prof Samir JAOUA -Contributing in an NPRP 27-6-7-24 : Ended 2011 -NPRP No.: 09 - 705 - 4 - 025 - Co-PI: Samir JAOUA -- Dec2010 - Nov2013 -NPRP No.: 04 - 259 - 2 - 083 ……………- LPI: Samir JAOUA -- Dec 2011-Nov2015 11-University and community service at Qatar University (2009-2012):: -1- Internal department seminars -Many seminars done for the department week- seminars -Many Seminars for the graduate project students - Qatar Career Fair 2011---11-April 2011: Presentation on behalf of the Head of the Dept. of Biol. & env Sc, of the programs of the department -2-Organization of the 1st Workshop for Lab Technicians on January, 6th 2011 Title: THE BASIC SKILLS OF THE BIOLOGY WORKPLACE: Towards the research lab accreditation -3-A New Research Lab of Biotechnology is set up -4-New fermentor [New-Brunswick] for the first time at CAS- Qatar university –May 2011 -5- Home- made recombinant Taq DNA polymerase: [Biotechnology and Genetic engineering], with outstanding benefits for the department: We produce each semester more than 15,000 Units of Taq DNA polymerase enzyme for PCR and DNA amplifications techniques .
