Domaine du Haut Bourg
Situated at the heart of the Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu appellation, Domaine du Haut Bourg is a
family winery that has been built up by the efforts of four generations. The first Muscadet vines
were planted on the estate in 1945 and, since then, the vineyard area has grown steadily to reach
40 hectares today.
The estate is planted with the following varieties:
- Melon de Bourgogne (Muscadet)
- Folle blanche (Gros Plant)
- Grolleau Gris (white)
- Sauvignon (white)
- Grolleau (rosé)
- Gamay (red)
- Merlot (red)
- Cabernet (red)

Our vineyards are all situated in the Commune of Bouaye. Our terroirs are mostly made up of red
sand, gravel and small rolled quartz pebbles that give our wines fullness and a fine balance. The
nearby Lake Grand Lieu to the south, the Loire to the north and the low height above sea level (15
to 25 m.) create a microclimate characterized by low variations in temperature between day and
night. This favours early maturity.

Work in the vineyards
Our vineyards are 30 years old on average, but certain parcels planted with Muscadet are 70 years
old. These old vines give our wines structure and minerality.
To obtain maximum root growth, we plough the soil around our newly-planted vines for the first
four years. This allows the roots to explore the soil more deeply and take advantage of better
water and nutrition reserves.
Four years after planting, we use controlled natural grassing and work the soils mechanically
between the vines.
The vines are planted at a density of 7000 per hectare and pruned in the “Guyot simple” style. Out
of a concern for plant life and the environment, we cultivate our vineyards in accordance with the
Terra Vitis charter.

Work in the cellar
The grapes are picked at ideal maturity and pressed directly by pneumatic presses. The juice is
then left to settle for approximately 48 hours at 13°C. Some of the deposit is filtered to give our
wines more substance and complexity. Alcoholic fermentation therefore takes place on very clear
juices in tanks, with constant temperature control (between 18°C and 20°C). This vinification
technique aims to produce fine, more aromatic and superbly balanced wines.
The white wines are matured on the lees. This is typical of the Nantais wine region and gives the
Muscadet and Gros Plant varieties the freshness they need for good balance.
The wines spend the whole winter on the lees and are bottled by us on the estate in March, having
become richer and more elegant.
We carry out tartaric stabilization of our wines by chilling them.

We have our own filtering and packaging equipment for bottles and wine boxes, which allows us
to react quickly to prepare your orders.

The Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu appellation
To achieve recognition of their quality, the 19 communes around Lake Grandlieu discussed the
possibility of creating a regional appellation. The region has a special microclimate due to the
lake’s 9000 hectares. It is said to be the biggest lake on the European plain. The national
committee of experts appointed by INAO studied and analyzed the criteria defined by the growers
and, in December 1994, approved the recognition of the new Côtes de Grandlieu appellation.
Côtes de Grandlieu is differentiated by parcel delimitation and by adult vines more than 7 years
old, which inevitably adds to quality.
A PRIVILEGED SITUATION
Created in December 1994, the Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu appellation’s first wines appeared
with the 1995 vintage.
15 years later, the appellation enjoys a very positive image, as its Muscadet wines are often
considered to be rich, fruity and elegant.
Situated to the north of Lake Grandlieu, the commune of Bouaye enjoys privileged exposure. Its
south-facing slopes, covered with gravel, favour early maturity.
