L'équipe de l'IISMM est fière d'annoncer que Nathalie BernardMaugiron, codirectrice, directrice de recherche à l'Institut de
recherche pour le développement (IRD) s'est vue décerner le
deuxième prix 'Recherche-Sud" pour ses travaux sur le droit des
pays arabes. Par cette distinction, l‟IRD souhaite "récompenser
des chercheurs et agents contribuant au dynamisme et au
rayonnement de la recherche pour le développement, et ainsi

Table ronde : Pensée et Littérature.
Pouvoir et société de l’islam classique aux lendemains de la Nahda
organisée par Maher Al Munajjed,
dans le cadre du Séminaire interdisciplinaire « Orient langue et littérature arabes » de l‟IISMM-EHESS
La question du rapport du pouvoir et de l‟Etat à la société a toujours
été une préoccupation importante depuis l‟islam classique, que ce
soit pour la littérature, les essais ou la philosophie. Puis, dès le 19e
siècle, avec la Renaissance culturelle /Nahda, la pensée sur les
rapports de l‟Etat et de la norme religieuse et ses interprétations a
connu un véritable renouveau: les penseurs et les différents auteurs
se sont penchés sur le rôle de l‟Occident et ses contributions dans le
domaine de la modernité, de la démocratie, du droit et de la
constitution. Un autre courant s‟est plutôt attaché aux fondements
de l‟islam comme source de revivification et d‟opposition à
l‟oppression. Les littératures de la Nahda, comme celles de l‟époque
classique, apportent leur témoignage et seront soumises à notre
examen critique.
Aujourd‟hui, avec le recul que nous avons à l‟égard de ce que l‟on a
appelé les printemps arabes depuis 2011, nous remarquons que
certains courants dans les pays arabes reprennent en grande partie
l‟esprit de réforme de la Renaissance/Nahda pour mettre en place
des régimes où le seul mot ne revient pas à un parti unique
dictatorial et tyrannique ainsi que le prédisaient Al-Kawakibi et sa
génération. Nous serions alors dans le droit fil des initiateurs de la
Renaissance/Nahda

Table ronde : Les coptes et la révolution en Egypte
La question de la place de la communauté copte dans une Egypte
dont le caractère islamique s‟accentuait constamment est devenue
plus importante dans le débat public égyptien dans les années
2000, et préfigurait en partie les espoirs et les attentes exprimés
place Tahrir en 2011. Peu après le renversement du raïs Hosni
Moubarak, disparaissait le pape copte Chenouda III (1971 – nov.
2012). Celui-ci avait structuré l‟Eglise sur le modèle autoritaire de
l‟Etat, et se voyait contesté à l‟intérieur de la communauté depuis
quelques années.
Mais la révolution a abouti à l‟arrivée au pouvoir des Frères
Musulmans. Des débats ont porté sur le statut et le droit
personnel des chrétiens et des juifs dans la phase d‟élaboration de
la nouvelle constitution, sans aboutir finalement à des
changements significatifs. Actuellement, les coptes ressentent
encore plus fortement que sous l‟ancien régime l‟insécurité face à
la politique gouvernementale et à la violence à leur encontre. Par
contre, le remplacement de Chenouda à la tête de l‟Eglise par
Tawâdros II pourrait orienter la communauté vers une nouvelle
forme de gouvernance.
Le débat permettra d‟évoquer le statut et les droits des chrétiens
en Egypte, les mobilisations des coptes avant et pendant la
révolution, enfin leur situation depuis l‟arrivée au pouvoir des
Frères Musulmans et la fin du long règne de Chenouda III.

Premier pays musulman du monde par le nombre de croyants,
l‟Indonésie a donné naissance, dans les années 1945-1960, à l‟une
des tentatives les plus abouties pour concilier principes islamiques
et démocratie. Bien au-delà de l‟Asie du Sud-Est, cette première
expérience méconnue d‟un islamisme en situation de pouvoir est
riche d‟enseignements quant aux possibilités et aux difficultés d‟une
recherche de compromis entre norme religieuse et exigence de

emergence of powerful transnational media which lead to the
formation of new public spheres with hitherto unknown
opportunities for open debate on a variety of political, cultural
and socio-economic topics. During the Arab Spring and its
repercussions these transnational media have played a central role
in sending the spark of change from one "maidan" to another.
Consequently, good command of Media Arabic is an essential
prerequisite not only for researchers on Arab World related
topics but also for practitioners in the field.
The Asia-Orient-Institute at the University of Zuerich offers an
intensive course to meet the needs of PhD students, scholars,

This symposium will attempt to address the ways in which preand early-modern interconnectivities – both real and imagined –

into modernity. Our focus will be upon transitions stretching

Centre de la Méditerranée moderne et contemporaine MSH Sud-Est of the Université de Nice SophiaAntipolis, in partnership with l‟Institut Universitaire de
France and Science-Po Menton.
It will kick off a series of meetings that are part of the cycle "A
New Agenda of Research for Mediterranean Studies" aimed at
finding the most promising areas within Mediterranean Studies.
The goal is clear, to gather researchers also involving different
generations of scholars, and identify together the most promising
perspectives for future study, so that they may be studied by
research laboratories as well as senior researchers and their
doctoral students.

The conference is organized by the DFG research network
“Medialisation and Social Change outside Europe ... ”, Berlin,
funded
by
the
German
Research
Foundation.
The conference is based on the assumption that social and cultural
change never originates exclusively from the media or
technological innovations, but rather depends on the changing
conceptions with which people adopt media technologies and
integrate them in their daily lives. Besides the transregional
exploration of new media configurations and changing media
practices, the conference will discuss the specific economic, legal
and political structures in the different local and national contexts
of what is increasingly referred to as the Global South.

Imam Rabbani: The mugaddid of the Second
Millennium", Institute of Islamic Theology,


Conference on Ahmad Faruq al-Sirhindi (1564-1624), on the
occasion of the 450th anniversary of his birth. Imam Rabbani is
one of the most prominent and influential personality in the
Naqshbandi Sufi lineage. Academics and scholars of Islamic
studies and of other disciplines are invited to contribute with
lectures examining the emergence of Rabbani‟s thoughts, his
political and religious teachings, his influence, the reception
which his teachings have received and the controversial discourse
on him and on the Islamic traditions inspired by his thought and
his works. In addition, mystical scholars of his tradition are also
invited to provide an inside view on the spiritual theological
pathway followed by Rabbani and on the scholar‟s legacy. A

Encyclopaedia of the Qur'an: Supplement
Brill and the editorial team under the direction of Jane McAuliffe
(also including William Graham, Daniel Madigan, Andrew
Rippin, and Mona Siddiqui) have decided to start working on
regular supplements to the Encyclopaedia of the Qur'an. The
goal is to expand the existing base of articles with freshly
commissioned ones on the same, related and new topics. These
will serve to complement, supplement, elaborate on, and provide
additional perspectives on the current print and online edition.
The editorial team would welcome suggestions of topics that
users of the Encyclopaedia feel should be included or expanded
upon. Following the contemporary process of “crowdsourcing,”
the collective input of the scholarly community and other
interested individuals will ensure that the coverage of the
Encyclopaedia continues to evolve with the field of Qur‟anic
Studies itself and to be as comprehensive as possible.

This research programme reflects targets new security-related
issues that are prime examples of the post-Cold-War era but
have been largely neglected in mainstream research. The
programme is intended to encourage junior scholars to pursue
unconventional research agendas that are nonetheless crucial,

intensively on work in progress for a limited period.

Each year, the School of Social Science at the Institute for
Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, invites about twenty scholars
to be in residence for the full academic year to pursue their own
research. The School welcomes applications in economics,
political science, law, psychology, sociology and anthropology. It
encourages social scientific work with an historical and
humanistic bent and also entertains applications in history,
philosophy, literary criticism, literature and linguistics.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. at time of application. Each year
there is a general thematic focus that provides common ground
for roughly half the scholars; for 2014-2015 the focus will be
Egalitarianisms.
