Je me sens sale et ça me plait. Marisol
Carlos
a balancé personne. Et il a pris le max. Vingt ans ferme ! Marisol a vu l’avocat hier après-midi
(Bizarre.) Le
garçon a l’air content.
Là-dessus, on me demande au
téléphone.
The cage
I’m in my bedroom eating an apple-banana. Marisol is preparing eggs with chorizo for my
breakfast. I love that. Lying down on Pipito’s bed I try to think about nothing, just this
simmering fat around the egg white. I feel dirty and I like it. Marisol comes inside with my
breakfast on a plate which she places on the bed. (I’m a bit macho…). She goes out again
empty handed and comes back with a large guava milkshake. She knows perfectly it’s my
favorite. We don’t talk much, just a little about her brother Carlos, who is in prison. I’d like
to talk to his lawyer to get him out of there. He’s implicated in drug trafficking. His name
was written in the address book of a Colombian girl who was taking cocaine into Cuba.
That’s how he was caught out. Carlos grassed on no-one. And he was given the maximum. A
twenty year sentence ! Marisol saw the lawyer yesterday and he strongly advised her to
keep me a long way from the affair. This is what she’s explaining to me, now. It’s a case of
international drug trafficking and I must not get accused of being mixed up with it, just
because I want to help him. Blablabla. So no question of initiating any procedures. (A
completely crazy idea, in any case !). I have to be content with doing what I’ve always done :
writing to him, and sending him books. I can’t even hope to visit him in prison. Fine. I take
note of the information and install myself at the window with my eggs and chorizo, legs
dangling over the void. A dozen meters or so separate me from the backyard. If I slip, I only
have a slim chance of surviving. There is no guard rail at this window, placed at the level of
the room’s floor. It was there long before the mezzanine was built, which explains its strange
position. It’s almost midday. I now observe the kid from downstairs. He keeps going in and
out of the building, closely followed by his little sister. They are putting the final touch to a
wooden cage at the back of the courtyard. The kids in the neighborhood being pretty sadistic
to animals, I suspect them of wanting to shut a cat or whatever animal in it, in the blazing
sun. Paying no attention to me they continue their dirty work. They plug the slightest hole of
light with scraps of cloth, then they both creep into the cage to check its strength and that the
light can’t get in. (Bizarre). The boy seems happy. I can’t see very well from where I am, but
he seems to be wearing a diabolical grin when he comes back out. His little sister is still
inside. I think I can hear her crying, unless it’s the meows of a cat she is torturing. I would
really love to fling a stone at the radiant face of the boy, but I’ve nothing to hand but a dozen
pairs of Nikes that belong to Pipito, whose room I’m occupying. A shame. The little bastard
is now nailing down the door. Then he leaves. The little sister is no longer making a sound.
Maybe she’s excited by being at her brother’s mercy. Sometimes he beats her, I swear. The
other day they were playing pimp and whore. He was getting worked up like a real pimp
and was giving her an earful because she hadn’t brought back enough cash. She was trying
to find excuses, in vain. He beat her even harder, until she passed out. Shit, it was horrible !
And now he was acting even worse, locking her into this miserable cage in the hot sun. I
watch him seize a broom handle and hit the hands that are trying to reach the light. She
hurls abuse at him through the wooden slats, calls him all the names under the sun, screams
in pain, all under my eyes. I don’t move a muscle, I might fall if I do. I finish off my plate, lick
the fat. I’m ignoble, I cum, I am superman El yuma ! I’ve got dollars and I can buy what I
want. Je suis le surhomme, the perfect being, on your beaches and in your beds. Drag her
out and do the same to her as you do to the neighborhood cats ! There you go, he throws her
against the wall. Clack, what a commotion ! She passes out, the cheat. He decides to finish
her with a good kick in the side. And when it’s done, he hangs her up on the washing line by
her hair, just like the kitten yesterday. There, I start to applaud. I can no longer wait with
my arms crossed. I feel free and I applaud, OK. It’s the only thing you can do : clap. Isn’t
that right, Reinaldo ? Applaud for the show. The kid looks at me, proud of himself. The
dictatorship has won. He is happy, me too. Somebody wants me on the telephone.
Tu comprends…
J’vais
me tirer d’ici, tu vas voir.
N’importe quelle embarcation fera l’affaire. Du moment que ça flotte. J’en ai marre de bosser
pour rien, Vince.
Et Paris ? Tu aimes Paris toi, Vince ?
- Paris ? Non. Je déteste Paris !
The short story where he left for Miami before the end.
So this was the way he told me it :
- I was so excited that I took a huge drag on my fag and threw it outside without paying
attention to the two other dudes keeping an eye on things, tucked away under the window.
The cigarette butt landed on Joseito’s head, who ran off shouting. The girl finally realized
what was going on, obviously. She pushed away my pal and put her clothes back on,
furious. I put the camera down on the table and talked to her to one side, in a corner. To
start with she doesn’t want to listen to anything but I promise her, I promise her god knows
what and it’s fine, she will continue on one condition : she wants me to shut the fucking
shutters ! Don’t worry, I tell her. It was just a joke, mami…You were perfect ! She gets back
on the sack and they continue their festival where they left off, as if nothing had happened in
the mean time. My Parisian friend thrashes about vigorously like a devil, this ass fiend !
REC. The little red light is blinking, which means it’s being recorded. I move closer to the
scene. Close-up, reverse zoom, close-up again. My mate comes inside her and withdraws
straight away, like a big macho, soaked in disgusting sweat. He rolls over to the side and
she, she stays on her back, without moving, eyes fixed on the camera. It’s me she’s looking at,
this tart, and she’s pissed off with me, for sure. You understand… Anyway, that’s how the
story went.
Chiqui stares at me and asks, just like that :
- Do you think I’d be a good camera man, Vince ?
- Yes, for sure.
- If you make a decision about your documentary film, I’m your man, OK ?
- Go for it !, I say to him, without thinking. I’ll contact you if I need someone for the camera
work. All right.
And on that he tells me that it’s late and that he has to go home. He no longer lives in Calle
Animas. Him and his wife split up two months ago.
- Fuck, that’s ridiculous ! She was your wife after all.
- It’s her that split up with me. She couldn’t stand me anymore. I still don’t understand why.
She cleared off with the kid. But I still see him quite often, you know : he drops by the
hairdresser’s nearly every day, although in the end I suppose he comes by just to tap me up
for cash, the little shit ! I’m going to get out of here, you’ll see. You come back in eight months
and I’ll have vanished. Gone, the Chiqui. Whatever small boat will do. As long as it floats.
I’m sick of working for nothing, Vince.
And Paris ? Do you like Paris, Vince ?
- Paris ? No. I hate Paris !
- J’me tire, salut !
On lui a dit.
». « A nuestro pais », par-ci. « A nuestro pais », par-là.
Moustache solennelle. Espèce de gros con ! Le pays nous appartient les gars, rendez-vous
compte. ¡Venceremos !
The perfume
I give him some perfume. A full bottle, as good as new. He tells me it’s the most beautiful
present of his life, that he loves perfumes. The other night, he splashes on a few drops of it
before going out into the streets. He comes across an ex in Animas. Blablabla. Enraptured as
she is. Straightaway, he goes to find the bottle of perfume and he puts some on her neck,
between her breasts, around her navel. With his finger. Like that for at least a minute.
Nobody can see them because it’s the evening and, in the evening, in San Leopoldo, you can
see fuck all. She cracks in the end. She pulls his trousers down to his ankles in one movement,
crouches down and starts energetically sucking him. She does it very well and he quickly
cums. He pulls his pants up and gets ready to leave but now she wants her dose. He’s going
to have to tactfully get rid of her before she starts screaming that all he’s good for is shooting
his load, that she hates him, that she’s always hated him, that... He puts his hand in his
pocket to check that the bottle has not disappeared, you never know with this type of... It’s
fine, the bottle is there, as hard as anything. – I have to go, mami, I really need to go and get
something for my mother, you understand… – Oh, don’t give me that, asshole ! I know very
well where you are going. The whole neighborhood knows about you and M. – Shit, in any
case I don’t owe anybody anything, least of all to you… – That’s it. Fuck off, you and your
perfume ! – OK, OK, Yemeli, calm down. He takes her by the arm, but she moves away. Her
own smell disgusts her, the taste of sperm even more. She’s lost all desire to fuck. She can
only be angry with herself for having acted quickly. Shit, shit, shit. She’s got no more to say
to this loser. And anyway, who does he think he is, this guy ? He’s acting like a macho all
because he’s found himself a yuma. – I’m off, bye ! She spins round on her heels and trips on
an overflow pipe. – Fuck, you all end up pissing me off. And don’t just stand there like an
idiot, help me get up. Best to say nothing or she’ll start off with her performance again and
all the neighbors will know that she sucked him off for a little bit of perfume and… OK, he
doesn’t even want to go to M’s place anymore, he’s had his bit for today. He’ll go back home,
seek out his TV, with his mother in front of it. No, he can’t go home just yet. He watches her
leave, shouting, with her big, solid butt. It’s the only thing people notice about Y, you can
sense it three blocks away, fuck, that ass, it should have turned him on more, but no, not
today. It’s not normal, he would not have acted like that before. Oh well, there’s no point
trying to catch her up now. A fucked up evening. Chiqui’s hair salon is closed. Doors shut for
a week. He cleared off to Canada to his sister’s, the fucker. Nothing’s moved an inch. It’s as if
he was going to open in half an hour. To Canada… If only he could get out there and send
some cash to his mother, so she could live a little better, so she could buy some new clothes,
washing up liquid, perfumed shower gel. He could move her somewhere else, into a quieter
and more spacious neighborhood of Havana, or he would send for her once he had found a
good job. They are easily found there and what’s more they pay well. They had told him.
And there you are at least free do what you want, without having the police up your ass all
day. Fuck, it’s really true that the television daily news announcer has a hideous moustache.
He had never really noticed before. And the solemn tone he assumes when ranting his
ridiculous anti-imperialist news. His way of endlessly repeating : ‘A nuestro pais !’ ‘A
nuestro pais’, here. ‘A nuestro pais’, there. Solemn moustache. Fucking asshole ! The country
belongs to us, guys, wake up and realize. The old alcoholic uncle vomits into the shitter. Ever
onwards ! Venceremos ! And the fridge is empty again. And it starts again : ‘A nuestro pais’,
‘A nuestro pais’. And her ass. That he should have taken. He tempers his ardor. His mother
has fallen asleep on the sofa, as usual. He can’t stay there. He has to go back out and walk a
bit. First of all put the perfume bottle back. Avoid hitting his head on the mezzanine ceiling.
Step over the old drunk uncle. M must be waiting for him and wondering what the hell he
was up to. But he’s free, for fuck’s sake, and he goes out to walk a while. Soon he’ll leave this
neighborhood of losers for the free world. Cross the Atlantic and settle somewhere in Spain
or in Italy. Higher up it’s too cold, they had told him that as well. And the people are too
uptight. What he needs is some sun and a woman all to himself. He’ll be a winner in Europe.
He’ll come back to see his mother in Cuba from time to time and il ira cracher sur la tombe
de Castro. Now he’s walking in the dark towards the Malecon. He’s looking for Victor or
Rolando. They always have a bottle of rum to share. Calle San Lazaro. Not a soul. The
cafeteria. Miserable as ever. He says hello to the neighborhood guys who are hanging out
with their chicks. The terrace is not too full. He notices Chris, his yuma, at the other end...
Saved.
The evening
The evening, poorly lit, on the corner of La Rampa.
Two young jineteras chat on the pavement, by the club entrance.
Their hands sweep up the night.
They are deaf and dumb.
In front, a police unit, immobile.
The girls stay there a moment, before disappearing.
I wait a little longer, then turn back and head for the neighborhood.
Maybe they bite their fingernails like I do, I say to myself.
It’s hard. And the sea sucks up my footsteps.

Trickle
And then go
Confronted by sea, the mind ends in pieces
When other sails manage to get snagged on the waves’ concrete
To caress the idea of a far away lover, he would need more
Than a city-horizon
With stone walls and beautiful straight lines
As if forgotten, she would no longer have anything to hide from the other but
Trickle
And hang onto this
Their life is not yours and is exchanged for nothing
It could never have worked
Too many ID checks, too much plaintive waste, too many condemned pesos,
And confiscated images
Never, you hear me, I will never return
That is not true, you’re lying – as an echo
The dogs which spend all their time fucking, you know them ?
No, it’s a black neighborhood
There are still some cigar boxes to be sold to the tourists
The brutal life or exoticism, choose your side
San Leopoldo and
This way they have of embracing in the airport
To reveal a whole life to those
Who have shared their paradoxes
Of a mythical dictatorship
I’ll be there,
She says
I’ll wait for you
I’ll sign
What were the rules again
What was the end ?
