LA BIENNALE des antiquaires GRAND PALAIS - Paris from september 10th to september 18th 2016 press release 2016/07/13 la biennale des antiquaires programming announced At the invitation of the Biennale des Antiquaires, The State Hermitage Museum, Le Mobilier National, and the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie present Three Special Exhibitions Paris, June 3, 2016 – Henri Loyrette, President of the Biennale, and Dominique Chevalier, President of the Syndicat des Antiquaires (SNA), together with the Biennale Committee – comprised of five members of the SNA council office and nine experts – are pleased to present special programming for the 2016 Biennale des Antiquaires. Comprised of two public collections – one of French prestige, the other international – and the mobilization of larger luxury watch houses via the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, the 2016 Biennale will offer three exhibitions of distinct cultural and aesthetic experience. Greeted by a spectacular scenography by Nathalie Crinière, collectors and visitors, in addition to discovering the masterpieces, jewelry, and selected objects on display, can also explore three unprecedented exhibitions in the history of the Biennale from Le Mobilier National in France, Russia’s State Hermitage Museum, and the Fondation de la Haute Hologerie in Switzerland. 02 la biennale des antiquaires programming announced A Century of French Elegance: Masterpieces of the Eighteenth Century The State Hermitage Museum — St. Petersburg, Russia On the occasion of the 2016 Biennale des Antiquaires, the State Hermitage Museum will present 35 works – some on view for the first time – in an installation of important Eighteenth century masterworks from the institution’s renowned collection. For centuries, France represented a certain model of art de vivre for all of Europe and Russia; the Eighteenth century was profoundly marked by this “French elegance”, found both in fashion and in furniture. Russian monarchs regularly visited Paris for the acquisition of objects in porcelain, silver and bronze, and were offered exceptional masterpieces as diplomatic gifts. Thanks to the favorable relations enjoyed between France and Russia, and particularly between Paris and St. Petersburg, the Hermitage constitutes a unique collection of French decorative art. About The State Hermitage Museum Founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great, with over 60,000 works of art on view in nearly 1,000 rooms and a permanent collection consisting of more than 3 million objects, the State Hermitage Museum is one of the largest – and oldest – museums in the world. The immense diversity of its collections enables the Hermitage to exhibit works from antiquity to the great masters of the Twentieth century. 03 la biennale des antiquaires programming announced tradition and daring! Le Mobilier national - Paris Le Mobilier National will offer an exhibition tracing the evolution of furniture over the course of the Twentieth Century. The period undoubtedly heralded one of the greatest aesthetic upheavals and presented radical changes in the evolution of form and function. Le Mobilier National will present this history through iconic pieces, representative of their time and their decade. If the pieces of the beginning of the last century have already acquired the status of cultural heritage, modern and contemporary works of the latter part of the Twentieth century are clearly the antiques of tomorrow. This is the thought underscoring the selection of works presented at the Biennale. About Le Mobilier National Heir to the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne and founded in 1662, Le Mobilier National provides the furnishing of the official palaces of the Republic of France and the various presidential residences. Reserved for institutions that serve the French national interest, these deposits are limited to reception pieces, after consideration of application by the Control Committee of Le Mobilier National. The Elysée Palace, Hôtel Matignon, various France embassies abroad, and reception spaces for international summits outside of Paris, are all places that are furnished largely owing to the collections of Le Mobilier National. These arrangements are intended to enhance the prestige of France and its major institutions. At the core of the Mobilier National’s mission is the safeguarding and development of its collections. At present the institution maintains and repairs approximately 80,000 furniture and textile objects, including tapestries and carpets. 04 la biennale des antiquaires programming announced The mastery of Time: The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie – Geneva, Switzerland The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) will stage, for the first time at the Biennale, a thematic exhibition illustrating the history of watchmaking and tracing the measurement of the origins of time. Titled “The Conquest of Time,” the exhibition is inspired by the historian Dominique Fléchon’s eponymous book – published by the FHH in collaboration with Groupe Flammarion. A hundred of artifacts and historic watchmaking objects come together to demonstrate the ingenuity man has shown throughout the centuries, in order to master its temporal environment. The exhibition was conceived as an initial journey made up of six sections, immersing visitors in the heart of these great moments in the relentless pursuit of the mastery of time. Visitors will discover the different stages of development that have made watchmaking one of the finest achievements of humankind and, jointly, a way to develop the fine craft around it. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie Since its creation in 2005 by founders Audemars Piguet, Girard Perregaux, and the Richemont Group the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) has served as guarantor of the exceptional universe of technical and precious fine watchmaking and continues to grow internationally. Today the FHH is the leading authority on fine watchmaking and deepens its commitment to the industry by showcasing and promoting its core objectives and values worldwide. The 28 contributing houses finance the FHH’s global activities, all within the parameters of fine watchmaking. The FHH’s work is relayed by a dozen local missions that drive initiatives with partner houses, major retailers, the press, and watch aficionados. Its objectives: Inform: to spark interest in the world of fine watchmaking and relate its history, culture, business, news, and environment through multiple forms of communication, including via online media, magazines, reference books, online encyclopedias, exhibitions, and conferences, among others. Train: to develop and share the knowledge and expertise of fine watchmaking enthusiasts and key players in the industry (sales, retailers, brands, etc.), provide customized training and Certification HH, HH Academy Certify: to define and establish the parameters of fine watchmaking and identify the industry’s participants, Livre Blanc. Organize: to broadcast watchmaking culture worldwide and foster domestic and international exchange via the organization of cultural and commercial platforms, including SIHH, W & W, Forum, events, and exhibitions, among others. 05 la biennale des antiquaires programming announced 06 List of Exhibitors as of July 13, 2016 After announcing in April an initial list of galleries that showcase the return of the Biennale des Antiquaires, the Biennale has confirmed a list of 124 exhibitors: 120 antique and four houses of HauteJoaillerie.
