9. -LES SPECTACLES DE PARIS. Paris, Duchesne, 1771. 1 vol in-18°. Contemp. red morocco. Rare small almanac
dedicated to Parisian shows for the year 1771. For calendar, some signs of the zodiac are different: eg; the month of June
corresponds to the sign of the crayfish. We also note that the period of Septuagesima is written therein; in Christian liturgy it
matched the third Sunday before the first Sunday of Lent, which is the 70th day before Easter is January 31. The liturgical
reform of Vatican II suppressed this time of Septuagesima and integrated in Ordinary Time after Epiphany. There are also
stories about the singers and actors of the Opera and several catalogs: all the opera houses of Paris, tragedies and comedies
or a list of the living Authors and of course the year's program for shows which will be presented in Paris, the French

». An early pleasant

important inspiration for La Fontaine. Bidpai or Pilpay, is the name of an Indian philosopher which the Arab and Persian
attribute this collection of fables [Anwari-Sahaïli]. It was translated into Latin in the thirteenth century. This first French
edition is important because it provided La Fontaine themes of many of his most beautiful fables in his Book of Fables
published for the first time in 1678 and 1679 (see Le Roux de Lincy, “Essay on Indian Fables”. Techener, 1838) (Graesse I,
423). The volume ends with the mention Part 1, but it is was the only published. Superb copy bound in red morocco.

and architecture (including in the "Egyptian" style), grandiose neo-classical arcades, subterranean temples and Romantic
cataclysms. There are spectacular designs for scenes set in Ancient Egypt, Babylon, Ancient Greece, Crete, the Ottoman
Empire and the Indies. Several plates at the end are for Pacini's opera The Last Day of Pompei (1827), depicting the
eruption of Vesuvius, including one plate that was the model for Karl Bryiullov's famous & vast painting (1833), now in the
State Russian Museum in St Petersburg. Copies were made on demand for opera lovers or prints collectors, making there

DESSINS ORIGNAUX SUR LES ASSYRIENS, LES ETRUSQUES, LES ROMAINS ET LES EGYPTIENS. Sans lieu ni date, ca. 1810-30.
3 vols. folio. Illustrated with original drawings. I. 95 (67 watercolours, 28 monochrome), II. 135 (113 watercolours, 22
monochrome), III. 127 (125 watercolours, 2 monochrome). Total of 357 original drawings, almost all are captioned. Half
calf (20th century). Impressive set of original drawings, by Charles Hamilton Smith (1776-1859), dedicated to Assyria,
Ancient Rome and Etruscan, and Ancient Egypt. Charles Hamilton Smith was a soldier, but also an amateur artist and
antiquarian. He is well known for his work on the uniforms. In these three volumes, he gathered a rich iconography from
ancient sources. If this practise of compilation genralized in England in the second part of the 19th century, at the time of
the conception of these books, it was not common. These three volumes show the impressive erudition of Charles
Hamilton Smith, his taste for uniform and antiquities, and that he was a talented artist. Remarkable work.

34 bis. CORVETTE DESCURBIERTA - Original maps from Spanish Scientific Explorations. [GONZALES (Antonio)].
MANUSCRIT / MANUSCRIPT. A collection of original sea charts and views. Indonesia, Chili, Peru, Mexico, California,
Indonesia, Singapore, China sea, Patagonia.]. [Dessiné à bord de la corvette. Drawn aboard the ship] 1815-1816. 1 vol.
folio. 18 manuscript ll., (ink drawings, 3 hand-coloured, 1 recto-verso, some folding). Bound in a contemporary album. A
large set of manuscript maps and coast views drawn by Antonio Gonzales aboard the famous Spanish exploration ship
“Descurbierta” (Discovery) during exploration journeys from 1810 to 1816. The corvette Descurbierta is famous for being
one of the two ships (with the Atrevida) of the Malaspina's expedition (1786-1788, and 1789-1794), the most important
voyage of discovery dispatched by Spain in the 18th century. Alessandro Malaspina (1754-1810), under a Spanish royal
commission, undertook his voyage around the world to increase geographic and scientific knowledge in general: inspired by
Cook’s and La Perouse’s voyages, Malaspina’s expedition counted numerous scientists aboard, and was conducted in a
highly scientific manner. The second purpose of the expedition was to check on the status of Spain's vast empire, especially
along the west coast of North America, where the Russians and the British were expanding their influence. The present
collection of 18 original drawings was made by Officer Antonio Gonzales aboard of the Descubierta from 1810 to 1816,
during different campaigns. The first plate is dated from 1810, and is one of the most striking leaves of the set. It is
dedicated to Patagonia (recto-verso), with many views and coastal profiles and an amazing representation of an Iceberg
observed by lat. 57° and 69 west, in the South of Patagonia. A large series, dated from 1816, is dedicated to Asia (China Sea,
Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia). Then they cross the Pacific to arrive in Gulf of California, and going north, we find
important maps of Chili and Peru (including a beautiful map of Conception: “Plano de la Bahia de Concepcion de Chile”).
The last chart depicts Saint Helena. The quality of the charts is very nice, they are both accurate, richly captioned, and
aesthetically realized. Gonzales was stationed at the corvette for at least 6 years. His personal file is at the Spanish navy
central archives. Those maps and views are totally unknown and there is no recorded publication for the details of these
campaigns, a continuation of Malaspina expedition round the world. It proves that the Spanish continued their scientific and
cartographic exploration with the Descurbierta. The quality of the manuscript is great, giving lot of local details of the coasts
visited.

Aîné, Imprimeur-Libraire, Editeur du Voyage autour du monde, Rue des Grands-Augustins, n°7, 1830. 2 vols. 8vo. 3 plates,
2 folding, 1 folding map. Contemporary wrappers. First French edition of this travel account by Peter Dillon: the first who
gives the solution of the fate of La Pérouse. The history of this discovery is long of 14 years. Peter Dillon (1788-1847) was
not an explorer, but a trader who crossed the South Seas for sandal wood. In 1826, he went back to Tikopia (from the
Solomon), an island that he visited in 1813, and where two men of his former crew had been left. These men still were in
Tikopia when Dillon reached the island. During their negotiations, Dillon saw that they had some material from an
occidental ship. Following his intuition and after different incidents, Dillon got to Mannicolo where he found the proof that
this was the place where La Pérouse’s expedition ended. He brought back the debris to France and England. Besides solving
the riddle of La Pérouse, Dillon's narrative is a classic account of the south Pacific in the 1820's. Hocken describes the
author as “a splendid specimen of a wild Irishman and seaman' and his narrative reflects the excitement and dangers of a
sole trader in the south Pacific during this era.” Fine copy in publisher wrappers.

45. [KAMASUTRA] - Inde, circa 1850. 1 volume in-12°. Cardboard/indian binding. Indian . Manuscrit with polychrome skits
illustrating some of the positions of the most famous erotic manuals. Brahmin Mallanaga attributed to Vatsyayana, writing
the Kama Sutra is spread over several centuries (1st to 7th century AD). Breviary for the education of manners of the upper
classes of Indian society, it is composed of several books on Indian philosophy. These "Aphorisms of Desire" (Kama
meaning desire and Sutra: aphorism) affect not only the life and sexual practices, but a code of conduct, offering lifestyle,
including rules (seduction) to look for a happy couple. In this book, which can only be a small excerpt of this vast Treaty,
some of the themes of good conduct are illustrated in love with text next. If these scenes are particularly suggestive here, The
Kama Sutra says "Erotize is not synonymous with sexuality. Sexuality is in the nature, eroticism, culture: sexuality thrives
culture. The Kama Sutra teaches us how to change sexuality eroticism, eg abstinence. Our manuscript evidence shows the
Samprayoga, the most famous part of the Kamasutra, which gives the description of several sexual positions in 36
polychrome scenes followed for each of them, a small explanatory text nicely framed by a double fillet and orange Grey.
The tradition of the Kama Sutra shows that eroticism is not a recent Western product, which should be afraid, and that
Indian culture carried a picture of the free and liberated sexuality that seem far from the realities of contemporary India. It is
rare to find an ancient Indian manuscript on the subject with illustrations, the influence of the British Puritanism have
significantly reduced the production of such documents for the last 200 years. Interesting testimony of this millenary culture
colonization of India has contributed largely obscure.

the existence of a body of water between Asian and American continent: the Bering Strait, as well as very important
cartographic, hydrographic and ethnological discoveries. The map depicts the strait, presents a correct delineation of the
Kurile Islands, and contains the first cartographic representation of the Alaska Peninsula. Müller also gives the account of a
manuscript in found in Yakoutsk which establishes that the Bering Strait had actually been navigated and discovered by
Simon Djenev in 1648. Fine copy of this work: “indispensable for the history of discovery and exploration in North Pacific.”

FRANCOIS. Paris, P. Le Mur, 1618. 1 vol. 8vo. 1 folding plate. Contemporary vellum. Rare first Parisian edition (Latin OE:
1615) of one of the most important and earliest works on China ever published in Europe. It contains the diary of the
pioneer Jesuit missionary in China, Matteo Ricci (1552-1610), edited and brought up-to-date by Ricci's successor to the
Chinese Mission, the Flemish Jesuit Nicolas Trigault (1577-1628). Trigault translated Ricci's manuscript into Latin, and
enlarged it with information from other sources, such as the reports by the Portugese Jesuits Longobardo, Vagnone and
Cattaneo of their own stays in China, with extracts from the usual annual letters for the years 1610 and 1611 by Father
Sabatino de Ursis, etc., as well as by his own comments and observations. When Trigault's book was published it shook
Europe. Never before had such well organized and accurate information about China been available. It opened the door to
China which had been closed since Marco Polo, and just like Ricci had introduced Euclid to China, so his journal
introduced Confucius to Europe. Ricci and Trigault's account of China was undoubtedly most influencial on cultural life and
philosophical thought in Europe, opening up a new, mysterious and until then virtually unknown world. Suddenly Europe
became aware for the first time of the existence of another highly civilized vast part of the globe. The French translation was
made by Trigault's nephew, Riquebourg-Trigault, physician to Philippe Guillaume of Orange. Fine copy.

BOLOGNE. Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1753. 1 vol. 4to. 6 folding maps, 1 folding plate, 1 folding table, 1 engraved headpiece. Contemporary calf. First edition of an important work on navigation by Joseph Bernard Chabert (1724-1805). The
work was highly praised by the examining commission of the French Academy of Sciences, it was recommended as a
navigational model for future navigators. The first part of the work contains the author's voyage from Brest to Louisbourg,
and 4 expeditions, the second part describes his astronomical observations at large. It is especially Chabert's astronomical
research, which was very precise even by today's standards, that give his work great scientific value. Chabert added 6 maps to
the first part, all of them with astonishingly exact data, also making the book interesting with respect to Canadian geography.
Chabert joined the navy on July 14, 1741, on the ship Léopard. He navigated the American coast, where he still was in 1746
on another ship, the Émeraude. After a promotion in 1748, he was ordered by the king to visit the region which now forms
the south-east part of Quebec, east Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, the voyage which he
describes in the present work. A few years after Chabert's visit in 1750-51, the French Indian War broke out in 1754, and
three-quarters of the remaining population of 10.000 French settlers, who were considered to be a threat to the British
position, were forcibly resettled in other parts of North America. He was received in 1753 as a member of the navy academy
in Brest, and later those of Bologne, Berlin and Nancy. Fine copy in armorial binding.

Didot, Quai des Augustins, à la Bible d'or, M. DCC. XLIV. (1744) 2 vols. 12mo. 2 folding maps. Contemporary calf.
First edition of this charming literary forgery attributed to Abbé Prévost, who pretend to give the translation of the account
of the travels of Captain Robert Lade, who never exists. The accuracy of some information regarding the new colony of
Georgia, founded ten years earlier, drawn from English sources, gave credit to the theory of a translation of an English text.
But there is no sign of a Captain Lade, and it is more likely a fancy of Prévost, who translate numerous important English
text during his exile in London, and among them major travel relation as Henry Neville's Isle of Pines (1668), and authored
a compilation of voyages. The work is illustrated with two folding maps, one of them being: “Carte d’une partie de
l’Amérique septentrionale”, engraved by Bellin. Fine copy.

First edition of one of the most important French travels' collection, gathering 10 texts, 5 of them being written by Jesuits, or
connecting with Jesuit missions. Its compiler, Henri Justel, was a Protestant scholar and bibliophile who served as Secretary
to Louis XIV before he fled to England at the time of the Revocation of the Edit de Nantes (1685), becoming Keeper of the
King's Library at St. James. The collection includes travel accounts relating to Africa, the Caribbean, and the English
colonies in North America, some never before printed, others translated into French from the English or the Portuguese. In
his preface Justel explains that he had the accounts printed in the order in which copy arrived from the translators - hence
the peculiar order of the book, often readjusted by later binders. This copy, still in its first binding, retains the original order.

du Monceau on the air. Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782), one of the important scientists of the 18th century, in relation
with the great minds of his time (Buffon, Malesherbes, Jussieu), often in conflict with the “Encyclopédistes”, was Member of
the Académie des Sciences from 1728, and the author of more than 60 works in various fields. The present manuscript is a
rough draught of a study on the quality on the air, undertaken to a larger work, he published in 1759 “Moyen de conserver
la santé aux equipages des vaisseaux”. Duhamel du Monceau wrote in 1745 a Memoir for the Académie, of which he refers
to in the present text, on the quality of the air, but in 1746, the French Navy faced a health disaster in the squadron of the
Duke d’Anville, so Duhamel decided to find out how to improve the quality of the air in the ships. His researches allowed
him to identify several factors that occasion the epidemics at sea, and to propose solutions, that already presented in this
manuscript. Indeed, in these pages, referring to important works of scientists as Du Hales, he explains the basic rules to
keep a clear air. Rare autograph manuscript.

REGLEMENT DE MR DE BOYNES EN 1772. SLND (1772) 1 vol in-32°. Contemp sheep. Precious small manuscript giving the
state of the French Navy on the eve of the American War of Independence and that belonged to Antoine Knight Cluzel,
who distinguished himself during the conflict and was a member of the famous Society of Cincinnati. The manuscript,
written in a fine writing very legible, has three parts: the first gives the complete list of French ships with the indication of the
number of guns, buildings are divided into the divisions (Brest, Rochefort, Bayonne, Saint- Malo, Bordeaux, Le Havre,
Toulon, Marseille). Following is the list of French vessels assigned to the departments of Brest, Toulon and Rochefort, and
the lists of vessels of Spanish navies, English, Danish and Russian. The second part, entitled "Status of Navy officers in 1772"
gives the names of vice-admirals, lieutenant generals, captains, lieutenants and ensigns of ships, fire ships captains, frigates
lieutenants and officers of the regiments (Brest Rochefort, Bayonne, Saint-Malo, Le Havre, Toulon). The third gives the
salaries paid to officers and the status of the royal household, specifying the battalions and regiments attached to it. This
manuscript precedes the first edition of the "State of the Navy" in 1773. Appointed Secretary of State for the Navy in 1771,
Pierre Etienne Bourgeois de Boynes (1718-1783) tried to reform this institution by modeling its organization to that of the
army. The difficulties accumulating (slowdown in shipbuilding, fleet maintenance ...), he had to leave the ministry in 1774
and was replaced by Turgot, then by Sartine. Provenance: Robert Antoine, Knight of Cluzel (bookplate manuscript: "At first

the squadron of Count d'Estaing sent to America. Promoted lieutenant, he embarked on the Guerrier in 1780 and then the
Triomphant in 1781 on which he participated at the Battle of the Saints (1782). Appointed vessel major in 1786, he became
captain in 1792. His action during the American War of Independence led to his admission to the Society of the Cincinnati.

French Navy since the First Crusade in 1095 to the beginning of the 18th century, illustrated with 6 wash drawings. The
anonymous author have acted upon the works of various historians to realize this synthesis. The book is divided into four
parts: 1) The French during the Crusades or overseas trips for the conquest of the Holy Land (1095-1270) ". 2) The French
Navy under the ancients Admirals (1270-1626) "; 3) The French Navy under the Grand Masters, leaders and General
Superintendents of Navigation and trade; 4) The French Navy since the restoration of the charge of admiral of France. The
first three parts occupy pages 7-78 of the manuscript. The fourth section covers the period from the reigns of Louis XIII th
and Louis XIV th is the most elaborate. It gives a clear idea of the evolution of the Royal administration during the 17th
century and the rise of the French fleet. Administrative and military strength of the Navy are detailed with great accuracy as
well as the composition of the fleet. It also contains an account of the main naval battles against Holland and England, with
next to the text of the tables giving the precise composition of the two fleets, squadrons composition, names of ships and
their captains, crews and guns ... including the famous battle of the Hougue (p. 185): "Order of Battle of the army of the

Holland." The book seems to have not been fully completed, the text is interrupted shortly after the start of the chapter
"General Treasurers Navy." Besides the 16 tables full page or in the text, 6 wash drawings representing ships or battle scenes
adorn the beginning or end of the parties. Unique copy of this remarkable historical work on the French Navy.

manuscript ll. Uncommon manuscript dealing with the cod fishing (early 19th century), in Canada intended to French shipowners. The author, probably a fisherman himself, first describes the current system, the time and the place for fishing, the

bases the idea with precise study of the costs of such an expedition and concludes saying: “Ainsi donc, même dans
l’hypothèse d’une pêche désastreuse, on jouirait encore d’un bénéfice équivalent à l’intérêt des avances”. Rare document

106. MAREY (NICOLAS JOSEPH)]. -VIE DU CAPITAINE THUROT. Paris, Imprimerie du cercle social, 1791. 1 vol in-8°. 19th
cent. half cloth. Interesting advocacy prepared by Mr. Nicolas-Joseph Marey for the privater Captain Thurot; to give the
origins of his birth (on Irish thought and very good family) and especially to rehabilitate his honor. His author, NicolasJoseph Marey (1760 Nights - Pommard 1818) was a merchant and politician French of the eighteenth century. His respect
for justice is a guaranty for the veracity of the facts reported in his book. François Thurot (1727 - 1760) was a French
privateer. Postmaster son, he made brief surgery studies, then embarks on a pirate as a surgeon. Taken prisoner by the
English, he managed to escape. He became a pilot and captain of a merchant ship. Privateer, he inflicted heavy losses to
maritime trade and the English king given command of a flotilla. He was killed at the Island of Man during a battle, on
February 28th 1760. According to a testimony sailor, Captain Thurot continued battle against three English ships and lost
his life. History has been much ink, a year after the publication of this book in 1792, "The spirit of French and foreign
newspapers" also published the truth about life "of a brave sailor and French hero": the captain François Thurot.

details of all that was saved from sinking by the owners of the goods and the goods that were looted by some residents. The
French Royal law was giving to coast residents the famous "kelp law" that allowed them to take possession of the merchandise
brought by the sea on beaches after a shipwreck. However, were forbidden and condemned the looting of goods still
contained by a ship pushed to the side. This case illustrates the difficulties of the owners of the cargo of the ship to prevent

A Bordeaux, chez les Freres Labottiere, Libraires, et à Paris, chez Lejay, Libraire, 1780. 1 vol. 8vo. Contemporary full calf.
Fine copy of this edition from Bordeaux of this account of Captain Viaud’s adventures, and his terrible shipwreck. The
book places Viaud at St. Domingue in late 1766. Before returning to France he made a business deal for a voyage from
Caye de St. Louis to Louisiana with the brigantine Le Tigre, with sixteen passengers. The ship encountered bad weather and
on February 16, 1767, wrecked off Dog Island (directly opposite the present day fishing town of Carrabelle). Amid much
difficulty they got ashore. The survivors patched a leaky pirogue, and some men departed in it, never to be seen again.
Viaud, his slave, Madame La Couture, and her son constructed a raft. The sick boy was left behind but the others made it to
the mainland. From there they undertook a tortured trip toward St. Marks. Along the way, they became so weak from
hunger that Viand killed his slave, and the deceased chattel became their main item of food. An English rescue party found
and save them. Later, Madame La Couture and her son returned to Louisiana. Viaud sailed to New York and eventually
home to France. Originally the account was published in 1768 with the title: Effets des passions, ou Mémoires de M. de
Floricourt (London & Paris 1768), and reprinted in 1770 with the title: Naufrage et avantures de M. Pierre Viaud, natif de
Bordeaux (edd. in Bordeaux (Sabin 99412) (this edition) and Neuchatel, both in 1770), followed by many other editions till
far into the nineteenth century. In 1771 the account was translated in Dutch and English by Mrs. Griffith. A very desirable
copy.

gilt, central royal coat-of-arms within a gilt triple filet border, spine in six compartments elaborately gilt, green morocco spine
label in second, others with a gilt foral design, edges gilt. First and only edition of this pilote for the Mediterranean coasts,
scarcely complete. Jacques Ayrouard was pilot on the royal galleys, and so his work as a cartographer is based on his own
observations as a sailor. The present pilot is a command of the Navy Minister created in 1720, and is dedicated to
Maurepas, famous to have introduce a more scientific approach of the naval matters. The folding map of Marseille is
noteworthy, but the most important is the one depicting Monaco, because it is the first representation of this famous city.
The quality of the maps explains that following cartographers as William Heather quote Ayrouard's work. Superb copy of
this rare coasting pilot.

CORRECT. Imprimé à Paris, par Pierre le Caron. [1498-1499]. 1 vol. folio. 126 ll. (double column, 52-53 lines), 308 wood
engravings, printer device on title page and on recto of colophon leaf. 18th century full vellum (tinted in green).
Utmost scarce incunabula Parisian edition of the famous “Grant Herbier en François”, which was used as a model for the
following editions. Only referenced copy in private hands of this work by Pierre Le Caron, who was the first to illustrate it
with French woodcuts. The first French edition of the book, entitled “Arbolaire”, was published in Besancon (1486-88) by
Petrus Metlinger. In contradiction to the tradition which wants that the French herbarium were translations of German texts,
the “Arbolaire” is a French translation of the “Antidotarium”, “Circa Instans” by Mattheus Platearius (cf. Meyer,
“Geschischte der Botanik”). Matthaeus Platearius was a physician from the medical school at Salerno, he is told to be the
author of a 12th century Latin manuscript regarding the use of medicinal herbs: « Circa Instans » or : « Liber Simplici
Medicina ». 264 of the 474 chapters of the present “Grant Herbier en François” come from this work. The prolog of the
“Grant Herbier en François” says: “En cette présente besogne est notre propos et intention de traiter des simples
médecines. Et est à savoir que la médecine des simples est dite simple pour ce qu’elle est telle que nature l’a produite et
formée. ” The Besancon edition by Metlinger (“Arbolaire”) is illustrated with German woodcuts (from “Gart des
Gesundheit” or “Hortus Sanitatis”. For practical reasons, this kind of work was profusely illustrated. The first Parisien
edition, ten years later by Le Caron, is the first to be illustrated with French woodcuts. It is scarce, but not as scarce as the
following edition (the present copy): only three libraries reference this corrected and enhanced version. According to our
researches, the present copy would be the only one in private hands. The corrections are important, among them: Le Caron
removed one woodcut, added three more (308 illustrations, vs 306 in the 1498 edition), the presentation of the text is not
the same (52-53 lines vs 46). The following editions of the 16th century were based on this version. The extensive index
which is printed on the lastest 16 pages, lists the plants according to their medicinal use; prescriptions against nervous
diseases are followed by a list of plants recommended for the eye, ear, nose, teeth, stomach, skin, etc. Then the herbs are
listed in alphabetical order. The 308 woodcuts of plants and animals are printed within a line border and are here extant in
brilliant impressions. Utmost rare and precious copy of this cornerstone book in history of French printed herbarium.

at his own expense to allow an accurate daily assessment for the prize offered by the Academie for the first successful
method of measuring longitude). The main contender assessed was the “Horloger du Roi”, Pierre Le Roy, who invented a
completely original marine chronometer in the 1750's, which he perfected over the next decade and presented to Louis XV
in 1766. In 1767 Le Roy entered his machine, which "embodied all the principles upon which later marine chronometers
were constructed" (Norman), in the Academie's competition. The present voyage between Le Havre and Amsterdam was
the first practical trial to which it was subjected. Le Roy was awarded a double prize in 1768, for his chronometer and for his
memoir describing it. Fine copy.

electrical and mechanical testing of the universe, the work of a scientist from the second half of the 18th century with very
original ideas. Its author, the physician Charles Rabiqueau was engineer optician of the king and gave experimental physics
course at home. The first part deals with the elements and principles that animate the Earth, Sun and living beings, while the
second discusses the different phenomena that govern them celestial and terrestrial elements. So we find there several
observations on magnetism, electricity, stars, comets, meteors, eclipses, RSS, etc. In his book "The formation of the scientific
spirit," the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard mention this work of Rabiqueau. He sees him as a precursor of this spirit:
whatever the scientific value of his theories, Rabiqueau is part of the men who contributed to the 18th century to the
emergence of a pre-scientific thinking free from its historical and religious dogmatic shackles. The book is illustrated with 4
folding plates, including a strange representation of the Universe system, and a general map of the Earth (390 x 600 mm)
prepared by the geographer Clermont in 1780, showing New Zealand and New Holland (Australia), recently discovered by
