INTERNATIONAL
YEAR OF
VOLUNTEERS
2001
During
the
International Year of
Volunteers, the Canadian
Cancer Society wished to
highlight this unique
moment in its history by
creating a national award
to honour the important
contribution of Society
volunteers across the
country.
The Quebec Division
decided to celebrate the
contributions of 14 volunteers, representing its 14
regions. In addition, the
Board of Directors wished
to honour one of its own
members by bestowing a
fifteenth award.
These individuals
were honoured during a

report
To the Members of the Board of Directors of
the Canadian Cancer Society, Quebec Division
We have audited the balance sheet of the
Canadian Cancer Society - Quebec Division as
at September 30, 2001 and the statements of
revenue and expenses and changes in net
assets for the year then ended. These financial
statements are the responsibility of the Society’s
management. Our responsibility is to express an
opinion on these financial statements based on
our audit.

Except as explained in the following paragraph, we conducted our audit in accordance
with Canadian generally accepted auditing
standards. Those standards require that we plan
and perform an audit to obtain reasonable
assurance whether the financial statements are
free of material misstatement. An audit
includes examining, on a test basis, evidence
supporting the amounts and disclosures in the
financial statements. An audit also includes
assessing the accounting principles used and
significant estimates made by management, as
well as evaluating the overall financial statement presentation.

Cost of special events (Note 7)
In common with many charitable organizations, the Society derives revenue from donations, the completeness of which is not susceptible of satisfactory audit verification.
Accordingly, our verification of this revenue was
limited to the amounts recorded in the records
of the Society and we were not able to determine whether any adjustments might be necessary to donation revenue, excess of revenue
over expenses, assets and unrestricted net
assets.

preceding paragraph, these financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the
financial position of the Society as at September

Notes to the financial statements year ended September 30, 2001
report
1. Description of the Society
The Canadian Cancer Society (the «Society») is a charity incorporated under
the Canada Business Corporations Act as a not-for-profit organization. The
Society is a national community-based organization of volunteers dedicated
to eradicating cancer and improving the quality of life of people living with
cancer. The Society carries out its mission through research, public education and services to cancer patients, and uses its influence in matters of public interest.
2. Accounting policies
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Canadian
generally accepted accounting principles and include the following significant accounting policies:
Revenue recognition
The Society follows the deferral method of accounting for contributions.
Restricted contributions are recognized as revenue in the year in which the
related expenses are incurred. Unrestricted contributions are recognized as
revenue when received or receivable if the amount to be received can be
reasonably estimated and collection is reasonably assured.
Expenses
Expenses are recorded in the books according to the applicable sector of
activity. Certain expenses that cover more than one sector of activity are
allocated proportionately, based on utilization.
Temporary investments
Temporary investments are recorded at cost, which approximates market
value.
Prepaid expenses and deferred expenses
Prepaid expenses and deferred expenses, which include mainly pamphlets
and instructional materials, are recorded at cost.
Capital assets
Capital assets are recorded at cost. Contributed capital assets are recorded
at fair value at the date of contribution. Capital assets are amortized on a
straight-line basis over their estimated useful lives, as follows:
Building
15 years*
Furniture and equipment 4 years*
Computer equipment
3 years
Automotive equipment 3 years
* Estimated useful life according to the Society’s Canadian policy.
Accumulated post-retirement benefits other than pensions
The Canadian Cancer Society provides certain benefits to retired employees
and their spouses. These benefits include medical services, life insurance
and extended health care benefits. The cost of these benefits is actuarially
determined using the projected benefit method pro-rated on service and
management’s best estimate of salary escalation, retirement ages of
employees and expected health care costs. This benefit plan is not funded.

To the Members of the
Canadian
Cancer
Society,
Quebec Division
The financial statements of
the Division have been prepared by management in
accordance with generally
accepted accounting principles and necessarily include
amounts that are based on
management’s best estimates
and judgments.
The Division maintains a system of internal controls which
provide management with
reasonable assurance that
assets are safeguarded and
reliable
financial
records
maintained.
The
Finance
Committee
meets periodically with management and external auditors
to
review
internal
accounting controls and the
application
of
accounting
principles and practices.
In
addition, it reports its findings
to the Executive Committee
which reviews and approves
the financial statements contained in this annual report.
Nicole Magnan M.A.P.
Executive Director

Canadian Cancer Society (National).
As the plan is not segregated by division, the pension benefits and assets
are disclosed in the Society’s consolidated financial statements. The Division
made employer contributions to the plan in the amount of $39,034 (2000
- $52,575). Based on the latest actuarial valuation performed as at January
1, 2000, there is no actuarial liability with respect to the plan.
