Introduction
2012 Global Impact Report – 19 Days of activism 1-19 Nov. and World Day for Prevention Child Abuse – 19 Nov.
3
Message from the WWSF Executive Director - Elly Pradervand
& Global campaign coordinator “19 Days of Activism for prevention of Abuse and Violence
Against Children and Youth 1-19 November”
Internationally, the 19 Days of Activism campaign was well
received and implemented by many coalition member organizations
around the world. Our annual Call to Action and Prevention Kit,
together with the WWSF Guide for prevention of child abuse,
continue to serve as empowerment tools for organizations and
grassroots groups concerned with the increase of violence and
eager to participate in the promotion of and education for better
prevention measures to end all forms abuse and violence.
2012 Thematic Focus
The Campaign proposed 19 themes for action with a focus on the main theme “Children
involved in armed conflict.” 178 partner organizations in 77 countries registered via our
new online website procedure to help share their planned activities on a Google map for all
to consult and join. Due to this new registration system some of our regular partner
organizations could unfortunately not join the campaign and we hope that this will improve
in the future.
Types of activities
Many categories of initiatives were organized, which varied from education, media and
social media, advocacy, lobbying, sensitization workshops, training, theater (arts, poetry,
dance, song, etc.), conferences/seminars, marches and sports events, to name some of them.
Prize for innovative prevention activities
WWSF continued to award its annual Prize to five coalition partners, presented on Page 14.
Acknowledgements
WWSF is grateful for the financial resources received from the
Principality of Liechtenstein - Foreign Affairs Office, the Commune
Plan-les-Ouates of Geneva, and from WWSF members.
WWSF also thanks all registered coalition member organizations,
friends, Board directors, staff, consultants, webmasters, interns and volunteers, who
contributed to the work of its Children-Youth section and made the ‘19 Days of Activism
campaign’ a success.
A special acknowledgement goes to our campaign co-coordinator, Fanny Toutou-Mpondo,
who served the coalition organizations with regular information and updates, as well as to
Anabel Rodriguez for translating our Prevention Kit into Spanish and for handling all
Spanish correspondence. A million thanks for their commitment and service to the cause.

WWSF PRIZE (US$ 1000)
Rania Family & Child Center Production, Jordan
The Queen Rania Family & Child Center (QRFCC) of the
Jordan River Foundation joined the 2011 campaign “19 Days of
activism for prevention of abuse and violence against children
and youth” through the art of theatre. QRFCC partnered with
some of the most influential stakeholders, rights bearers and
children in using theatre as an advocacy tool and through this
process, the participants questioned social norms and
challenged their peers.
Along with youth leaders and volunteers, QRFCC created the theatre play entitled “On the Edge of
Silence”, which focused on the topic of corporal punishment and mainly on cases of child abuse in
the home, schools, and within the Ministry of Social Development Care Centers. The play was based
on child abuse cases that have been reported to the Family Protection Department and released to the
public through media outlets during 2010 and 2011. The play also included short clips and visual
testimonials from QRFCC’s youth expressing their thoughts on statistics of child abuse, as well as
firsthand accounts of children who have been victims of corporal punishment.
In addition to creating the play, youth leaders and volunteers also took part in the production and
performance. Preparations for the play started in August and involved the help of a professional
choreographer and musician, as well as a professional scenographer and set designer. A total of 13
2012 Global Impact Report – 19 Days of activism 1-19 Nov. and World Day for Prevention Child Abuse – 19 Nov. 15
schools were visited and mobilized, and a total of 379 students auditioned for the play, therefore
allowing the play’s awareness and advocacy messages to be spread among this large group. Five
performances took place during November and December on four different stages, reaching a large
audience. The performances took place in the capital Amman, and in the southern city of Aqaba.
In December 2011, the play was presented at the First Scientific Conference of the Jordanian
Professionals Network for Child Safety. The conference was organized by the Jordan River Child
Safety Program and was aimed at evaluating the current situation of violence against women and
children in Jordan. The Minister of Social Development and representatives from the Ministries of
Education and Health, judges, members of the police force, UNICEF and UNFPA country
representatives and psychosocial service specialists attended the conference.
The performances were each followed by an interactive discussion allowing the public to share their
thoughts, reactions and opinions on the play. “On the Edge of Silence” was able to reach remote
areas by targeting people through live performances, as well as through media coverage. The play
was also promoted and supported by different social media outlets, such as Facebook and Twitter.
WWSF PRIZE (US$ 1000)
The National Family Safety Program, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
On the occasion of “19 days of activism 1-19 November”, the National Family Safety Program
organized a campaign on the theme of bullying. A series of activities was introduced according to a
program set up in three phases.
The first phase consisted of the creation of a blog on the campaign
(2’598 hits around the world), accompanied by visits to primary and
secondary schools in Riyadh for the purpose of raising awareness. It
was also accompanied by the use of Twibbon, a site where one can
make a virtual bumper sticker to attach to his profile on social
networks in order to support a cause. The total number of
participants during the period of 1 to 19 November came to 176.
During the second phase, the awareness building effort intensified in schools: interactive workshops
led by the Amaan Youth Group, the distribution of the Guide to prevent and protect children from
bullying, and the launching of two surveys, completed by 527 students on their knowledge and
experience on bullying.
The celebration of the World Day for the Prevention of Child
Abuse constituted the third phase of the program, and took
place at the Kingdom Center of Riyadh in order to reach out
to more people.
It is also noted that the National Family Safety Program is
now preparing a detailed study on bullying in school.

Report of WWSF “Solidarity Event for child soldiers”
Organized on 19 November 2012
In collaboration with the International School of Geneva
On 19 November 2012, World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse, the WWSF ChildrenYouth Section organized a “Solidarity Event for Child Soldiers” in collaboration with the
Campus des Nations of the International School of Geneva.
As this year’s main theme for the 19 Days
Campaign was “children involved in armed
conflict”, the International School, a registered 19
Days coalition member, participated in 2 activities
on the issue:
A video contest on child soldiers entitled
“None of our business! Keep children away from
adults’ wars.”
A letter campaign where Geneva-based
students wrote messages of support to former child
soldiers in the DRC.
The event opened with a welcome message by Ms. Estelle Hughes, a teacher at the
International School, who has been active in involving her students and colleagues in the
19 Days campaign and in preparing the 19 November Solidarity Event. The event was
followed by Ms. Elly Pradervand, WWSF Executive Director and by Ms. Fanny ToutouMpondo, 19 Days coordinator, who introduced the Foundation, the 19 Days campaign,
videos and campaign results, and led the rest of the event.
Credit was given to several ‘19 Days Ambassadors’,
especially to Mr. Murhabazi Namegabe, Director of BVES,
a rehabilitation center for child soldiers in DRC, a country
that underwent rebel attacks 2 days before our Solidarity
Event. As for Ms. Betty Makoni, Director of the Girl Child
Network Worldwide, we presented her autobiography
“Never Again” via a video and distributed copies of the
book to teachers. Ms. Makoni was quoted as a model of
commitment and resilience regarding child sexual abuse, a
situation, which also affects most girl soldiers.
Letters of support written by students from the International School and the Cycle
d’Orientation Bersot, another Geneva-based private school, to children living at the BVES
were collected during the event. WWSF acknowledged the more than 120 letters and cards,
which will be sent to Mr. Namegabe in the coming weeks.
WWSF then presented the videos prepared for the video contest on ‘child soldiers’. All
the videos were made by Year 9 students aged 13 to 15. The winning video by a 13-yearold,
called
Pema
Dazer,
is
available
at

2012 Global Impact Report – 19 Days of activism 1-19 Nov. and World Day for Prevention Child Abuse – 19 Nov. 21
The video will be sent to Ms. Leila Zerrougui, UN Special Representative for children and
armed conflict, who sent a video message of support to WWSF on the occasion of the
Solidarity Event and to thank the students for sharing solidarity with child soldiers. The
video is available online at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xNKDfj_QlI
Participants were impressed by the quality of the videos prepared by the students and by
their capacity to express their concern about “how and why to prevent child recruitment in
armed conflict?” All the videos have been displayed on YouTube.
Licia Chery, a rising Geneva-based singer wrote a song for
former girl soldiers living in the BVES, which she performed
live at the event. The lyrics of the song are attached *, which
will be sent to Mr. Namegabe to share with the ex childsoldiers.
Other students took part in the Solidarity Event by sharing
readings and performing music.

The event closed with refreshments offered by WWSF and with informal discussions with
participants and teachers of the International School who expressed interest in WWSF
activities and with whom we plan to establish a lasting partnership on various issues, i.e.
prevention of violence against children and the Swiss White Ribbon campaign.

Lyrics of the song: SOLDIER OF LOVE
Lyrics and music: Licia Chery, November 2012
Silent whisper in the night
The hope of freedom in the heart
That's me... everyday, me... in every way, me...
Trying to fly
It may sound a little psychotic
I'm not the one you see, don't you dare say it's chimeric
But there's another me, someone that's free, someone relieved
From the chains of their heart
OH, I'M A WOMAN AND I'M A SOLDIER
BUT I WANNA FIGHT FOR LOVE
AND NOTHING ELSE AND NOTHING ELSE
A change is gonna come I can feel it
Whatever it takes I'll be free one day I know it
And life will smile at me, genuinely, generously
And leave the nightmare behind
OH, I'M A WOMAN AND I'M A SOLDIER
BUT I WANNA FIGHT FOR LOVE
AND NOTHING ELSE AND NOTHING ELSE
So relieve me from the hate that you're sending around
From the chains that are weighing me down
Cause I'm a soldier of love

BENIN
Humanitarian Organization of
Mercy (HOM), 01 BP 8165,
Cotonou, Benin
On the occasion of the second
edition of the 19 Days of activism
campaign,
the
Humanitarian
Organization of Mercy (HOM) set
up a series of public awareness
activities
throughout
local
communities in Benin. The
campaign took place from 13 to
15 November and focused on
several
themes:
corporal
punishment, sexual abuse and
harmful traditional practices.
HOM staff first introduced the campaign in primary schools by educating the students,
teachers, and headmasters about sexual abuse and its consequences. This was followed by
prevention training workshops which taught students how to prevent and protect themselves
in the event of abuse.
In addition, HOM gathered parents, local chiefs and other community members to
participate in sensitization dialogues about the selected themes. Concerns, questions, and
comments were expressed and addressed. At the conclusion of the forum, it was agreed
upon that HOM must continue to run this campaign annually until changes are made in
Benin.

Development (APD) actively participated in the 19
Days of activism campaign through the organization of
a community solidarity event.
They urged the
Government of Burundi to take immediate action to
promote and protect the rights of children and youth,
particularly those living and/or working on the street.
The event included the participation of over 40 local

rights, while additionally receiving social counseling
from APD staff.

They also organized an event at Lake Tanganyika beach, near the Port of Bujumbura. The
choice of this place was motivated by its importance for national economy as it attracts
people from various economic sectors who come there to set up business activities, while
leaving behind all kinds of garbage that pollute the environment. APD along with some
street children and youth united to clean up this area in order to protect the health of all the
persons who visit the lake beach every day. It must be noted that this place is also a shelter
for a large number of children and youth in street situation.

2012 Global Impact Report – 19 Days of activism 1-19 Nov. and World Day for Prevention Child Abuse – 19 Nov. 26
d’intensifier leurs efforts l’an prochain.

Le but était

SIERRA LEONE
Taia Development Program (TDP), 12 Bathurst Street, 232 Freetown, Sierra Leone
Taia Development Program
(TDP), 2011 Prevention
Prize laureate, set up
diverse activities and events
for the second edition of the
19 Days of activism
campaign.
On 1 November, they sent
text messages to mobile
users from Freetown and
some other provinces to
nd
announce the “start of the 2 edition of the 19 Days of activism” (in collaboration with
several national mobile phone companies). These messages were also sent to the Ministry of
Social Welfare, Gender and Children Affairs, to UNICEF and other stakeholders.
On 2 November, 3 collaborators from TDP held a radio discussion program on the
following theme: “It’s Time to Make Violence against Children/youth and Child Abuse
2012 Global Impact Report – 19 Days of activism 1-19 Nov. and World Day for Prevention Child Abuse – 19 Nov. 35
Unacceptable in Sierra Leone”. On 3 November, TDP led a “schools-to-schools” campaign
in 5 primary and secondary schools reaching out to 6000 pupils. The campaign encouraged
children and youth to not participate in the political gatherings organized for different
elections in 2012 (presidential, parliamentary). These gatherings present a certain number of
dangers for children (alcohol abuse, theft, fights, hate speeches and abusive languages).
On 9 November, an outreach program set up in 5 communities, invited traditional leaders
and other local stakeholders to reflect on the various forms of child/youth trafficking and its
impact on communities. From 15 to 16 November, TDP led another radio program to
advocate for implementation of the CRC. On 18 November, a youth
outreach program was conducted on non-violence in post-election situations to sensitize
vulnerable categories (street children, drug users…) to stay away from post-election
violence.

Network Movement for Youth and Children’s Welfare (NMYCW-SL), 30 Grandcess
Street, Off Kroo Town Road, 232 Freetown, Sierra Leone
The Network Movement for Youth
and Children’s Welfare (NMYCWSL) organized activities for the 19
Days of activism campaign in
collaboration with Action Aid
International, the National Youth
Commission, Culture Radio and
the Young Men’s Christian
Association. They focused on the
following theme: neglect of
children and youth.
On 1st November, they organized a
public community dialogue at
Kroobay Community Center with
key stakeholders such as Ms. Gloria
Bayoh, Gender Officer of the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone. The objective
was to present and officially launch the 19 Days campaign.
They organized several other public events in various communities where some panelists
and participants (youth included) shared their opinions and experiences regarding the most
common forms of neglect and its consequences: children forced to work by parents who can
not feed them, children deprived of food when they refuse to go to work, children doing
hazardous work, severe corporal punishment when they lose money, etc.
Each event concluded with recommendations on how to reduce these risks and how to
prevent neglected children/youth from becoming violent (ex: peer-to-peer education).

JORDAN!
Jordan River Foundation (JRF) Queen Rania Family and Child Center (QRFCC),
Mawloud Mukhlis Street, 11181 Amman, Jordan
The Queen Rania Family & Child Center of the JRCSP has partnered and rallied alongside the
international community to end violence against children since 2006, by designing and launching
events on the World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse - 19 November of every year. In 2012 the
JRCSP objectives included securing children’s rights and safety and enhancing positive child-rearing
practices and family dynamics. Now established nationally, regionally and internationally as an Arab
model for child safety, a significant advancement to the activities has been the expansion of child
safety centered activities in the southernmost city of Aqaba, where JRF has established The Queen
Rania Al Abdullah Center for Community Empowerment (QRCCE), which played an essential role
in commemorating the WWSF World Day for prevention of child abuse - 19 November. Throughout
the month of November, the JRCSP intensified its efforts and emphasized its work on violence
prevention via interactive mediums and educational programs, such as
Art, Drama, Sports, Music and Information Technology, that are founded on the fundamental
concepts of self understanding, self expression, the privacy of the body, discovering abilities and
unleashing capacities. The interactive activities were implemented in both Amman and Aqaba
targeting children between the ages of 7-14. A full report will be made available on the WWSF 19
Days of Activism website http://19days.woman.ch as an example of good practices to follow.
Youth Programs provide activities that empower youth, strengthen their sense of identity, increase
their awareness, enhance their skills and activate their participation to become leaders in the field of
child safety in their individual communities and society as a whole.
Parenting Programs model culturally appropriate practices rooted in community needs and
challenges in Jordan. Workshops were organized during the month of November.
Media Activities: Recognized as important, not only as a fundamental method to bring public
attention to various child rights issues, but also for advocacy purposes to shed light on the situation
of Jordan, offer concrete tips that prevent the incidence of abuse inside the home as well as highlight
the importance of 19 November, as a significant global advocacy effort. In collaboration with
national newspapers JRF published a press release on the World Day for prevention of child abuse
and was hosted on popular Jordanian morning TV and radio shows.
Social Media: JRF decided to launch a social media campaign utilizing various JRF social media
pages on Facebook, Twitter and through internal and external email messages exchange.
Conclusion. Yearly QRFCC attempts to go above and beyond previous commemorations in an
effort to advance its efforts and further cultivate a culture of child safety.

familiar with the topic but had difficulties in defining what cyber-violence really is. They
emphasized the importance of trust between adults (mostly parents) and children and the
need for open communication with adults. They also elaborated their own "network of
messages" to adults, stressing their need for education and adult supervision.

FICE Romania, No. 4 Banul Udrea Street, bl. G8, staircase 1, flat 16, 3rd district, Bucarest,
Romania
On the occasion of the 19 Days of
activism campaign, FICE was active at
the national and local levels in
Romania.
On 13 November, they conducted the
National Conference “Violence against
children and young people- means of
manifestation, causes and prevention
measures” that took place inside the
Palace of Parliament. The conference
gathered representatives from diverse
Ministries (Education, Family and
Social Protection, Youth and Sports,
etc.) as well as county representatives,
school authorities, NGOs and other
relevant stakeholders from all over the
country.
After the debates, FICE Romania
outlined strategies and action plans to
be implemented in the future. FICE
representatives carried out information
campaigns in schools and, at the
initiative
of
representatives
of
Ministries, will establish counseling centers and family mediation to provide training to
surgery specialists. Through some questionnaires sent to the Romanian population, they
realized that almost 80% of the population is not informed enough to tackle domestic

authorities.
At the local level, FICE organized debates to:
- Identify specific manifestations of violence against children and youth
- Prevent the causes of such situations
- Implement concrete measures of intervention
FICE also held meetings with teachers, parents, students, authorities, lawyers, psychologists,
physicians, academics, business representatives, religious leaders and mass media. These
