Our annual Call to Action and Prevention Kit, together with the WWSF Guide for prevention of child abuse, continue to serve as empowerment tools for organizations and grassroots groups concerned with the increase of violence and eager to participate in the promotion of and education for better prevention measures to end all forms abuse and violence. 2012 Thematic Focus The Campaign proposed 19 themes for action with a focus on the main theme “Children involved in armed conflict.” 178 partner organizations in 77 countries registered via our new online website procedure to help share their planned activities on a Google map for all to consult and join. Due to this new registration system some of our regular partner organizations could unfortunately not join the campaign and we hope that this will improve in the future. Types of activities Many categories of initiatives were organized, which varied from education, media and social media, advocacy, lobbying, sensitization workshops, training, theater (arts, poetry, dance, song, etc.), conferences/seminars, marches and sports events, to name some of them. Prize for innovative prevention activities WWSF continued to award its annual Prize to five coalition partners, presented on Page 14. Acknowledgements WWSF is grateful for the financial resources received from the Principality of Liechtenstein - Foreign Affairs Office, the Commune Plan-les-Ouates of Geneva, and from WWSF members. WWSF also thanks all registered coalition member organizations, friends, Board directors, staff, consultants, webmasters, interns and volunteers, who contributed to the work of its Children-Youth section and made the ‘19 Days of Activism campaign’ a success. A special acknowledgement goes to our campaign co-coordinator, Fanny Toutou-Mpondo, who served the coalition organizations with regular information and updates, as well as to Anabel Rodriguez for translating our Prevention Kit into Spanish and for handling all Spanish correspondence. A million thanks for their commitment and service to the cause. 2012 Global Impact Report – 19 Days of activism 1-19 Nov. and World Day for Prevention Child Abuse – 19 Nov. 4 " !"##$%"#&'(&#)**'+,&+"-"./"0&.1&2342& ! QRFCC partnered with some of the most influential stakeholders, rights bearers and children in using theatre as an advocacy tool and through this process, the participants questioned social norms and challenged their peers. Along with youth leaders and volunteers, QRFCC created the theatre play entitled “On the Edge of Silence”, which focused on the topic of corporal punishment and mainly on cases of child abuse in the home, schools, and within the Ministry of Social Development Care Centers. The play was based on child abuse cases that have been reported to the Family Protection Department and released to the public through media outlets during 2010 and 2011. The play also included short clips and visual testimonials from QRFCC’s youth expressing their thoughts on statistics of child abuse, as well as firsthand accounts of children who have been victims of corporal punishment. In addition to creating the play, youth leaders and volunteers also took part in the production and performance. Preparations for the play started in August and involved the help of a professional choreographer and musician, as well as a professional scenographer and set designer. A total of 13 2012 Global Impact Report – 19 Days of activism 1-19 Nov. and World Day for Prevention Child Abuse – 19 Nov. 15 schools were visited and mobilized, and a total of 379 students auditioned for the play, therefore allowing the play’s awareness and advocacy messages to be spread among this large group. In December 2011, the play was presented at the First Scientific Conference of the Jordanian Professionals Network for Child Safety. The Minister of Social Development and representatives from the Ministries of Education and Health, judges, members of the police force, UNICEF and UNFPA country representatives and psychosocial service specialists attended the conference. The performances were each followed by an interactive discussion allowing the public to share their thoughts, reactions and opinions on the play. “On the Edge of Silence” was able to reach remote areas by targeting people through live performances, as well as through media coverage. As this year’s main theme for the 19 Days Campaign was “children involved in armed conflict”, the International School, a registered 19 Days coalition member, participated in 2 activities on the issue: A video contest on child soldiers entitled “None of our business! Keep children away from adults’ wars.” A letter campaign where Geneva-based students wrote messages of support to former child soldiers in the DRC. The event opened with a welcome message by Ms. Estelle Hughes, a teacher at the International School, who has been active in involving her students and colleagues in the 19 Days campaign and in preparing the 19 November Solidarity Event. The event was followed by Ms. Elly Pradervand, WWSF Executive Director and by Ms. Fanny ToutouMpondo, 19 Days coordinator, who introduced the Foundation, the 19 Days campaign, videos and campaign results, and led the rest of the event. Credit was given to several ‘19 Days Ambassadors’, especially to Mr. Murhabazi Namegabe, Director of BVES, a rehabilitation center for child soldiers in DRC, a country that underwent rebel attacks 2 days before our Solidarity Event. As for Ms. Betty Makoni, Director of the Girl Child Network Worldwide, we presented her autobiography “Never Again” via a video and distributed copies of the book to teachers. Ms. Makoni was quoted as a model of commitment and resilience regarding child sexual abuse, a situation, which also affects most girl soldiers. Letters of support written by students from the International School and the Cycle d’Orientation Bersot, another Geneva-based private school, to children living at the BVES were collected during the event. WWSF acknowledged the more than 120 letters and cards, which will be sent to Mr. Namegabe in the coming weeks. WWSF then presented the videos prepared for the video contest on ‘child soldiers’. All the videos were made by Year 9 students aged 13 to 15. The winning video by a 13-yearold, called Pema Dazer, is available at the following link: http://studio.stupeflix.com/v/ds5IhZmboP/?autoplay=1 2012 Global Impact Report – 19 Days of activism 1-19 Nov. and World Day for Prevention Child Abuse – 19 Nov. 21 The video will be sent to Ms. Leila Zerrougui, UN Special Representative for children and armed conflict, who sent a video message of support to WWSF on the occasion of the Solidarity Event and to thank the students for sharing solidarity with child soldiers. The video is available online at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xNKDfj_QlI Participants were impressed by the quality of the videos prepared by the students and by their capacity to express their concern about “how and why to prevent child recruitment in armed conflict?” All the videos have been displayed on YouTube. Licia Chery, a rising Geneva-based singer wrote a song for former girl soldiers living in the BVES, which she performed live at the event. The lyrics of the song are attached *, which will be sent to Mr. Namegabe to share with the ex childsoldiers. Other students took part in the Solidarity Event by sharing readings and performing music. Photo: WWSF staff and Singer Licia Chery (in blue) The event closed with refreshments offered by WWSF and with informal discussions with participants and teachers of the International School who expressed interest in WWSF activities and with whom we plan to establish a lasting partnership on various issues, i.e. prevention of violence against children and the Swiss White Ribbon campaign. • Lyrics of the song: SOLDIER OF LOVE Lyrics and music: Licia Chery, November 2012 Silent whisper in the night The hope of freedom in the heart That's me... everyday, me... in every way, me... Trying to fly It may sound a little psychotic I'm not the one you see, don't you dare say it's chimeric But there's another me, someone that's free, someone relieved From the chains of their heart OH, I'M A WOMAN AND I'M A SOLDIER BUT I WANNA FIGHT FOR LOVE AND NOTHING ELSE AND NOTHING ELSE A change is gonna come I can feel it Whatever it takes I'll be free one day I know it And life will smile at me, genuinely, generously And leave the nightmare behind OH, I'M A WOMAN AND I'M A SOLDIER BUT I WANNA FIGHT FOR LOVE AND NOTHING ELSE AND NOTHING ELSE So relieve me from the hate that you're sending around From the chains that are weighing me down Cause I'm a soldier of love I'm a soldier of love, I'm a soldier of love.
