FRENCH CHAT BOOSTERS

FRENCH CHAT BOOSTERS
French Chat Boosters are 64 one-to-four-page enrichment handouts dripping with
French. They are rich in choices, giving students thousands of things to say to express themselves
and “personalize” their French. That’s what makes this book such a stimulating and effective
supplement to the “one-size-fits-all” language of texts which is limited. In addition, these
handouts often pool many aspects of topics from across levels.
Where a text is based on the sequential unveiling of language, these French Chat Boosters
can be introduced in any sequence. They can be units by themselves. Invaluable resources that
offer a wealth of everyday French to explore, discover, and say, these handouts will get students
excited about speaking. They encourage interested students to learn more on their own.
French Chat Boosters highlight grammar and vocabulary themes from across Levels 1
and 2, with all material presented conversationally. Even regular verbs are presented not as
infinitives but in their Tú and Yo forms so students can use them to ask questions. Everything is
presented ready to say right away without having to read explanations, determine correct forms,
or apply rules. No rules means less fear. Students don’t have to be intimidated putting sentences
back together that were dissected and put into boxes and charts like in texts.
If we want students to speak, they need things to say; lots of situational, fun & teasing
expressions; ways to react and give their opinions; modeled sentence patterns; questions, “skeletal”
conversations for inviting, etc.; and plenty of substitutions. That’s what French Chat Boosters
offers them. They:
• are highly motivating and pique students’ curiosity.
• get students talking because they like “trying out” the cool things they find.
• put students on a fast track to “second nature” speaking and fluency.
• expose students to more French for more meaningful speaking.
(Raise the ceiling and students will surprise you.)
• have students hearing and saying grammatical structures before they’re even taught.
• offer students choices for better self-expression & to “personalize” their French.
• can serve as “sneak previews” of topics and grammar that may ahead in the text.
• are student resources for class speaking and projects
As mentioned, the handouts are dripping with language and choices to express a
variety of moods, opinions, and feelings. For example, there are handouts with:
172 adjectives
194 J’aime activities
165 Je present forms
Quel + 60 nouns
100 supermarket products 175 professions
DISTRIBUTING THE HANDOUTS
HANDOUTS
French Chat Boosters may be used to supplement text chapters or as thematic units; but
they can be given to students at any time to explore and use.
Give beginning students handouts on the French they “already know” and the
”French – Like Magic” to boost their confidence. The 4-page Mon Petit Guide d’Expressions is full of
fun things to say in different classroom situations and to even tease classmates. C’est__! And
Quel __! will also give students dozens of ways to comment.

FRENCH CHAT BOOSTERS
Distributed as an e-book by Tralco-Lingo Fun.
In the second wave, pass out the handouts that let students talk about themselves such
as Mes Affaires, Moi, Tu Aimes__? and Comment est Pierre? They help students establish their
identities in and with their new linguistic world. That makes them feel comfortable. There’s a “life
preserver” sheet along with other classroom procedures sheets to help with immersion. But save
those for later. After that, distribute the French Chat Boosters in any order. They’ll take your
students beyond the classroom walls to situations in the everyday real word; parties, inviting,
movies, restaurants, talking on a cell phone, theft of the boeuf bourguignon, making excuses,
department stores, and much more. Set up paired conversations with Internet photo backdrops
from the Francophone world.
USING THE CHAT BOOSTERS
The French Chat Boosters are very flexible and can supplement any text or
curriculum. It’s not necessary to cover all the material on any one handout before passing out
other sheets. Focus on a few sentences at a time, on small sections, on whole page at once.
Do create imitiative speaking. Add new rejoinders. Create role plays and situations based on
the material. Use the material for paired speaking stimuli. Students can use the chat boosters:
1. as “crutches” for paired conversations in and out of class; to participate in class.
2. as resources for speaking presentations, homework, written dialogues, and projects.
3. to learn more Spanish on their own if they are inquisitive and want to advance.
Teachers can use the chat booster charts:
• for warm-up speaking activities.
• for cues to practice structures.
• for general enrichment.
• for “communicative” homework.
• for examples to support lesson material.
• for resources to write dialogues.
•
•
•
•
•
to supplement text material.
for paired conversation prompts.
for review and proficiency practice.
for imitative writing exercises.
to energize students & get them
talking.
ABOUT PRONUNCIATION
Spend a couple minutes each day pronouncing the material in a section of a handout.
Have the students repeat it. In time, students will sound out the words on their own.
THE “PERPETUAL” FRENCH NOTEBOOK
It is crucial that the students ATTACH all the Chat Boosters in their French notebooks.
Require them all to be there for notebook checks. Students should keep them all year and take them
from level to level. They can be helpful resources in their study of French even into college.
KEEPING STUDENTS INTERESTED IN FRENCH
Students expect to learn to speak in a language class, so let’s do everything we can to
encourage speaking. If we can get them to speak and realize their progress, they may be motivated
to continue studying French; to use it more in the community; to travel or study abroad; or even to
select a career that requires speaking French.
May French Chat Boosters help you “launch” your students into a totally new
enthusiastic dimension in speaking… and have a great time doing it.
