Un siècle après les premières importations, en
1875, les Haras Nationaux organisèrent une
succession de mission, appelées « Missions
d’Orient ». Cinq furent organisées, de 1875 à
1880, sous la férule de l’Inspecteur Général de
Laire, qui ramenèrent 110 étalons et
24 juments, étalons qui seront affectés, pour la
plupart, à Tarbes, Pau, et Pompadour en priorité, mais également à Aurillac, Libourne,
Perpignan, Rodez, et Villeneuve sur Lot ; les
juments, quant à elles, étant dirigées vers
Pompadour. Les rapports des agents des haras
participant aux missions soulignent que « le
cheval arabe est toujours l’expression de la civilisation qui le produit. Là où il est la propriété des tribus belliqueuses et nomades du désert qui s’en
servent pour leurs migrations et leurs razzias, ce
cheval est encore de haute valeur et de grande
race… Les berceaux de la race pure arabe sont
compris entre la chaîne du Taurus et la
Méditerranée, au nord ; le canal de Suez et la mer
Rouge, à l’ouest ; le golfe d’Aden et la mer d’Oman,
au sud ; le golfe Persique et le Tigre, à l’est ; et se
composent de la Syrie, de l’Al-Djézireh ou
Mésopotamie et de l’Arabie qui se divise en cinq
grandes provinces : l’Irak, le Hauran, l’Hedjaz, le
Yémen et l’Hadramaout, patrie du cheval arabe,
plus vulgairement connu sous le nom générique de
Nedjd. ».

depuis le XVIIIème siècle,
et la politique des Haras
Nationaux, à l’origine
de leur expansion en
France, a été initialement orientée vers une
sélection de cette race pour ses aptitudes à produire des chevaux porteurs, destinés essentiellement aux croisements pour les chevaux de
l’armée. Mais, parallèlement à ce but, l’objectif
recherché était également d’apporter de la
vélocité et de l’endurance aux souches communes de l’élevage local. Ainsi, l’élevage français de chevaux Arabes Purs s’est développé sur
des bases solides d’un apport de vitesse, et n’a
cessé d’évoluer dans cette direction, créant un
courant de production pour la course, avec des
lignées spécifiques.
L
Les premières importations du Moyen-Orient
datent de 1779, et de la mission de Messieurs
de la Guerche et Person, qui ramenèrent « de
l’Asie, 24 étalons arabes, dont quelques uns furent
envoyés dans les Pyrénées ». En 1818, le chevalier
Van Hoorick, directeur à Arles, ramènera 8 étalons et 3 juments venant d’Alep, au nord-ouest
de la Syrie. Ses commentaires indiquaient que
« les races qui paraissent être les plus distinguées et
les plus recherchées sont celles appelées Kohlan, qui
se trouvent chez les Arabes qui habitent la
Mésopotamie aux environs de Mossoul ; ensuite,
viennent celles dont la dénomination serait trop
longue, et que l’on retrouve dans la tribu considérable des Anese. ». En 1820, Messieurs de Porte
et Louis Damoiseau ramenèrent également, de
Damas cette fois-ci, 36 étalons qui furent affectés, pour la plupart, à Tarbes et à Pau.
Cinq nouvelles missions furent ensuite organisées, entre 1882 et 1891, par le Comte de
Ganay, directeur du Haras de Pau, secondé par
Monsieur de Beauvallon, du Haras de
Pompadour, qui ramenèrent au total 54 étalons et 16 juments. L’Inspecteur Général de
Portalès effectua ensuite deux missions, en
1893 et 1897, dont il ramena 32 étalons et
14 juments. Cinq autres missions succédèrent
encore, en 1902, avec Messieurs Chambry et de

Finalement, la compétition devint progressivement le principal critère de sélection de la race
arabe, au fur et à mesure que s’estompait l’objectif du cheval de guerre. D’ailleurs, le croisement pour la race de l’anglo-arabe
s’accommodait également fort bien de cette
sélection par la course. Les premières épreuves
officielles réservées aux chevaux arabes apparurent dès 1860, en même temps que les
courses pour les anglo-arabes. En effet, ces
deux races furent, jusqu’à une époque récente,
toujours associées dans les mêmes programmes, les arabes ayant le droit de courir
avec des décharges dans les courses d’angloarabes, ce que les meilleurs faisaient régulièrement. La sélection de la race arabe en fut
d’autant plus sévère, que ses produits étaient
continuellement confrontés à meilleurs
qu’eux. Et, en 1874, date de la réorganisation
des Haras Nationaux, un programme de
courses arabes et anglo-arabes était organisé
dans le Sud-Ouest de la France, en utilisant les
hippodromes de Bordeaux, Tarbes, Pompadour
et Pau.
Saunhac en Syrie à nouveau, puis en 1909,
1912 et 1914 avec l’Inspecteur Quinchez,
qui se dirigea vers l’Egypte afin d’y trouver
des Arabes de course. C’est de là que provint
Latif, importé d’Alexandrie en 1909, et père
de Dénousté, l’étalon de base de l’élevage
français.
Une dernière mission sera conduite, en 1925,
par l’Inspecteur Général G. Rieu de Madron
qui ramena 9 étalons et 2 juments, tous des
Anezeh. Son rapport précisait que : « d’après ce
que j’ai constaté au cours de mon voyage, j’estime
que les éléments de tout premier choix de la jumenterie arabe se trouvent dans les tribus nomades du
désert, chez les Sbaa, chez les Feidhan, chez les
Beggaras et chez les Roalla, qui constituent la
confédération des Anezeh », dont le berceau se
trouve dans la moitié la plus septentrionale de
l’Arabie, au nord du Djebel Chammar. Ces
meilleures souches des arabes purs se retrouvaient également dans les tribus nomades du
désert du Nedj, dans le sud de l’Arabie, possédant pratiquement les mêmes caractéristiques
que les arabes Anezeh.
C’est ainsi que s’est façonné l’élevage français
de la race arabe de course, à partir d’une
longue histoire d’amélioration de la race, forgée par les Haras Nationaux et adossée à un
programme de courses pérenne, avec un élevage dont le seul critère de sélection était la
compétition dans le but de sélectionner des
reproducteurs porteurs destinés à produire en
race pure et en croisement.
C’est à partir de ces étalons et juments, bâtis en
force, qui allaient imprégner l’élevage arabe
français de leur rusticité, que se créèrent et se
développèrent les grands élevages qui façonneront la race du cheval arabe français telle qu’on
la connaît aujourd’hui. Ce sont eux qui ont
produit et mis en valeur, par les courses, les
grands étalons arabes qui sont à l’origine de
notre race arabe actuelle : Denouste, le plus
connu aussi bien en France qu’à l’étranger ;
mais aussi : Nedjari, exporté en Pologne, Kann,
exporté en Russie, Norniz, Nedjanor, Kriss II,
Baroud II, Kairouan III, tous grands performers
en course.

Abu Al Emarat was an outstanding athlete being the 2008 Triple
Crown Champion in the UAE and also the leading 4 years old. He
was also the first Triple Crown champion to perform at the highest
level and managed to outclass Group 1 winners during the short
time he was on the track. His sire, Al Nasr was Top 3 Pure Arabian
Bred Sire in the UAE for season 2008-2009 (source : Come Racing
EAU). His third sire, Wiking was a prominent name in racing
circles, both as an exceptional race horse and producer of some
of the best and most succeful race horses in the world. Abu
Alemarat hails from the female dam line of Saint Laurent, Gosse
Du Bearn, Al Sakbe & Magic De Piboul, a line of leading and
influential international performances sires.

Blending the best of US and French bloodlines. Al Nasr’s second sire is Wiking, a prominent
name in racing circles, both as an exceptionnel race horse and a producer of some of the
best and most successful race horses in the world. In 1985 he was the IAHA Arabian race
horse of the year and remains the all time leading sire of Arabian race horses.
Mangalie d’Albret is by Manganate and has also produced Bengali d’Albret (by Cheri
