Thomas Jefferson et l’Ouest - L’expédition de Meriwether Lewis et William Clark
Dans l’imposante bibliographie qui s’est développée depuis les années 1970 et surtout avec la commémoration du
bicentenaire, il était nécessaire de faire des choix. On s’est limité à une sélection de livres.
Tout en présentant les trois axes de réflexion qui sous-tendent le sujet : scientifique (recherche du légendaire passage
du Nord-Ouest, meilleure connaissance de la nature du territoire nouvellement acquis et de ses populations),
économique (concurrence pour le commerce des fourrures et l’accès au marché chinois), politique (rivalités avec les
Britanniques, les Espagnols, les Russes et les Français), on a placé la dimension scientifique au centre de la réflexion.
Des références sont données sur la situation géopolitique au début du XIXe siècle, l’expédition et ses résultats, les
conséquences de la pénétration américaine et l’évolution des interprétations concernant cette expédition (mythe
fondateur, exemple de triomphalisme lors du centenaire et devenu symbole du multiculturalisme pour le bicentenaire).
