On
Vatican II : A vision for the future, a pedagogy of faith, a way to resolve particular questions
Christoph Theolbald, SJ, Centre Sèvres, Paris
(presentation in French with simultaneous translation)
A large-scale cultural shift appears to validate those who expect nothing more of Vatican II. We will illustrate how the corpus of the
council’s teaching and the conciliar event itself present new avenues of transmission and creativity, enabling present and future
generations to envision the future of the Church.

Vatican II: A Council of Justice and Peace
Cardinal Peter Turkson, President, Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace
The orientations of the Second Vatican Council offer us a vision of the mission of the church in the world where evangelization is
inseparable from work for human development in all its forms. How can this vision inspire us and inform new generations
committed to a people centered ethics in our contemporary context marked by global social and economic crises?
Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace since 2009, holds a doctorate in
Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome, and taught for many years as a seminary professor. He was ordained
to the presbyterate in 1975, and was ordained to the episcopate in 1993, serving as Archbishop of the diocese of Cape Coast,
Ghana. He was President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference from 1997 to 2005 and General Relator of the 2 nd Special
Assembly for Africa of the Synod of Bishops in 2009.
May 29, 2012
Building on Vatican II: Setting the Agenda for the Church of the Twenty-first Century
Richard R. Gaillardetz, Joseph McCarthy Professor of Catholic Systematic Theology, Boston College
A noted theologian once described Vatican II as "an unfinished building site." We need to explore ways in which our church can
build on the foundations of the council even as it addresses the new questions and challenges facing our church today.
Dr. Richard R. Gaillardetz is the Joseph McCarthy Professor of Catholic Systematic Theology at Boston College. He has published
numerous articles and has authored or-co-authored several books including, Keys to the Council: Unlocking the Teaching of Vatican
II (co-authored with Catherine Clifford, Liturgical Press, 2012), and The Church in the Making, Paulist, 2006.
Keys to the Council: Unlocking the Teaching of Vatican II (avec Catherine Clifford, Liturgical Press, 2012), et The Church in the
Making, Paulist, 2006.
Plenary Sessions/Séances plénières:
Learning from the Council: A Church in Dialogue
Catherine E. Clifford, Faculty of Theology, Saint Paul University, Ottawa
A council is a moment of intense dialogue in the life of the Church. Midway through the Second Vatican Council, Pope Paul VI
insisted that “the Church's internal relationships should take the form of a dialogue” (Ecclesiam Suam, 114) an exchange extended
in a series of concentric circles to include other Christian Churches, other religions, and all of humankind. The experience of
conciliarity is essential to our way of being Church and to the proclamation of the Gospel in the 21st century.
Catherine E. Clifford is Professor and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Theology at Saint Paul University, Ottawa. She is director of the
Centre for Vatican II and 21st Century Catholicism. She is co-author, with Richard Gaillardetz, of Keys to the Council (Liturgical
Press, 2012), and co-editor with Gilles Routhier and Michael Attridge, of Vatican II: Canadian Experiences, University of Ottawa
Press, 2011.
May 29, 2012
Vatican II as the foundation for a new project of evangelization
Gilles Routhier, Professor, Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, Université Laval
Some suggest a linear reading of Church history where the pastoral programme put forth by Vatican II, the pastoral adaptations of
the 1960s appear to have failed, and are replaced today by a new programme, adapted to the new millennium. We will propose
another read of Catholicism’s evolution and demonstrate that the new evangelization will not engage our contemporaries in a
profound manner unless it finds its true foundation in Vatican II.
Gilles Routhier is Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies at Université Laval. He is the author, coauthor and editor of many books, including La théologie catholique entre intansigeance et renouveau, Leuven, 2012 and Penser
l’avenir de l’Église, Fides, 2008.
Witnesses to Vatican II / Témoins du concile
Leo Laberge, OMI, Professor Emeritus, Saint Paul University
Gregory Baum, Professor Emeritus, McGill University
Bishop Remi De Roo, Bishop Emeritus, Diocese of Victoria
Bishop Gérard Deschamps, SMM, Bishop Emeritus, Diocese of Timmins
And others
Bishops and theologians who took part in the council reflect on their experience in dialogue with young Catholics. What did this
experience teach them about their ministry and the life of the Church? What do they wish to hand on to the next generation?
Workshops/Ateliers:
Vatican II and the Vocation of the Laity
Richard R. Gaillaretz, Joseph McCarthy Professor of Catholic Systematic Theology, Boston College
One of the great contributions of the Second Vatican Council was its effort to develop a rich theological understanding of the place
of the laity in the church. This workshop will explore two different theological understandings of the laity that can be found in the
council documents and then consider their helpfulness for the church today.
Dr. Richard R. Gaillardetz is the Joseph McCarthy Professor of Catholic Systematic Theology at Boston College. Dr. Gaillardetz has
published numerous articles and has authored or-co-authored eight books including, Keys to the Council: Unlocking the Teaching of
Vatican II (co-authored with Catherine Clifford, Liturgical Press, 2012). He is currently the president-elect of the Catholic
Theological Society of America.
Word of God, Source of Life: Remembering Dei Verbum
Michael Attridge, Associate Professor, Faculty of Theology, University of St. Michael’s College, Toronto
May 29, 2012
The opening paragraph of last chapter of the Vatican II's "Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation" (Dei Verbum) makes a
profound statement central to Christianity: the whole of Christian life is to be nourished and ruled by sacred Scripture. What did the
Council mean by this statement? How is it to be interpreted within the document? What meaning does it have for us today?
Michael Attridge is Associate Professor of Theology at the Faculty of Theology, University of St. Michael’s College, Toronto. His
teaching responsibilities at the Faculty include courses in Christology, ecclesiology, 19th and 20th Century Catholicism and Vatican II.
His current research is a collaborative project studying the impact of Vatican II on Canadian Church and society.
Eastern Catholic Churches and the Paradox of Vatican II
Myroslaw Tataryn, Professor of Religious Studies, St. Jerome’s University, Waterloo
The paradoxical challenge of the post-Vatican II Church: while the Council invited the Eastern Churches to renew themselves in
accord with their ancient traditions, efforts at self-governance (Ukrainian Patriarchate) and ecumenism (Zoghby initiative) have
been stymied by the Vatican. This current situation underlines the need for a fuller development of our understanding of the
church.
Myroslaw Tataryn is Professor of Religious Studies at St. Jerome's University in Waterloo. His areas of specialization are Eastern
Christian theology and Eastern Christians in Canada. He has published and lectured internationally. His co-authored trinitarian
approach to understanding disability will be published by Novalis in 2013.
Body, Soul and Sex: Living Sexuality in 21st Century Catholicism
Leah Perrault, Director, Pastoral Services, Diocese of Saskatoon
Though not explicitly addressed by the Council, sexuality has become a polarized dividing line in the contemporary Catholic Church.
Drawing on Gaudium et Spes, Gravissimum Educationis and Apostolicam Actuositatem, this workshop will look at the Council’s
vision for humanity and explore what we, as a Church, have done and have failed to do in helping Catholics to integrate sexuality
and spirituality in the everyday moments of their lives – and their bedrooms.
Leah Perrault is the Director of Pastoral Services for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon. She is the coauthor of How Far Can
We Go? A Catholic Guide to Sex and Dating, Novalis, 2009, and the author of Theology of the Body for Every Body, Novalis, 2012.
She and her husband, Marc, are the proud parents of Robyn (4) and Eliot (1).
I’m Dating a Muslim! Interfaith Relations in Real Time
Julian Hammond, Director, Ecumenism and Interreligious Affairs, Diocese of Edmonton
Explore key teachings of Vatican II's "Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions" (Nostra Aetate) and
their application in contemporary diocesan, parish, and school settings. Best practices, proven successes and some "learning the
hard way."
Julien Hammond is the Director of Evangelization and Catechesis for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton. He is also the
Ecumenical Officer of that Archdiocese responsible for inter-Christian and interfaith relations for the local church in central Alberta.
He serves on many ecumenical and interreligious boards and committees at the local regional and national levels: notably the
Edmonton & District Council of Churches, the Edmonton Interfaith Centre for Education & Action, the Western Diocesan & Eparchial
Coordinators of Ecumenism and the national Roman Catholic-United Church dialogue.
Diocesan and Parish Pastoral Councils: Active Participation of the Faithful in the Life and Mission of the Church
Chad Glendinning, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Canon Law, Saint Paul University
Diocesan and Parish Pastoral Councils – “so necessary to that ecclesial renewal called for by the Second Vatican Council” –
represent an important opportunity for collaboration between the clergy and non-ordained faithful (Ecclesiae de mysterio, art. 5).
This workshop will identify the conciliar rationale for these consultative bodies and offer practical suggestions to facilitate effective
pastoral planning.
Chad J. Glendinning is Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Canon Law, Saint Paul University, Ottawa. His research interests include
liturgical law, conciliar and post-conciliar liturgical reform, and the legislative provisions for use of the forma extraordinaria of the
Roman Rite in light of the present law – a juridical expression of the Second Vatican Council’s doctrine and ecclesiology.

The ‘Signs of the Times’ for a Global Church
Margaret Lavin, Regis College, Toronto
The church cannot be a bystander in the world. As Christians, we have to face the ‘signs of the times’. This workshop will discuss
the major themes of Gaudium et Spes, the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, and explore the ‘signs of the
times’ that face the church today.
Professor Margaret Lavin is Assistant Professor of contextual and systematic theology at Regis College, University of Toronto. Her
most recent publication is Vatican II: Fifty Years of Evolution and Revolution in the Catholic Church, Novalis, 2012.
Baptism: Key to Full, Conscious, Active Participation in the Liturgy
Bernadette Gasslein, Editor, Celebrate magazine, Edmonton
Appropriating our baptismal identity enables us to grasp the depth and challenge of full, conscious and active participation. This
workshop will explore the link between baptism and participation in the prayer and life of the Church, offering practical pastoral
strategies for helping communities appropriate their baptismal right and duty.
Bernadette Gasslein is the editor of Celebrate!, magazine. She holds a Licentiate in Sacred Theology with a Specialization in
Pastoral Catechetics from the Institut catholique, Paris. Bernadette has been involved in various liturgical and catechetical
ministries, including four years as a project specialist with the National Office of Religious Education of the Canadian Conference of
Catholic Bishops.
Or comment ses
The Renewal of Religious Life - Historical Perspectives and Current Challenges
Kelly Connors, PM, Archdiocese of Detroit
Reflecting on the historical context leading up to the adaptation and renewal of religious life mandated by the Second Vatican
Council in Perfectae Caritatis, we will examine the continuing impact of the council’s directives for renewal and discuss the
challenges of identity and significance facing religious life within the Church today.
Kelly Connors is a member of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, United States Province. She has taught theology at both the
secondary and university levels and is on the faculty of The Cecilia Meighan, RSM Institute of Law and Religious Life at Misericordia
University, Dallas, PA. Kelly is currently the Delegate for Consecrated Life for the Archdiocese of Detroit and a canonical consultant
and presenter for her own institute as well as other institutes of consecrated life.
d'Ottawa.

Catholic Ecumenical Principles and the Local Church
Bishop Donald Bolen, Diocese of Saskatoon
A look at how the Decree on Ecumenism and subsequent Church teaching on Christian unity has changed and could change our
ecclesial lives in parishes, schools, and dioceses. In light of Catholic principles for ecumenical engagement, we will also reflect on
how ecumenical dialogues open a door to joint prayer and study, common witness and mission.
Donald Bolen served at the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity from 2001 to 2008 under Cardinal Walter Kasper, serving
as the Co-Secretary of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC), the International Anglican-Roman Catholic
Commission for Unity and Mission (IARCCUM) and the International Methodist-Roman Catholic Dialogue Commission. Ordained
Bishop of Saskatoon in 2010, he is currently the Roman Catholic Co-Chair of IARCCUM, a member of the International EvangelicalCatholic Dialogue, Co-Chair of the Canadian Anglican-Roman Catholic Dialogue Commission, and a Member of the Pontifical Council
for Promoting Christian Unity.
Memory and Reform: Vatican II 50 Years Later – Religious Education/Catechetics after the Council
Joan Cronin, G.S.I.C., Executive Director, Institute for Catholic Education, Toronto, ON
After the Declaration on Christian Education (Gravissimum Educationis) 1965, a period of catechetical experimentation exploded in
the Canadian church. What of these days is left in your MEMORY? Where have we been? Where are we going? How will Religious
st
Education/Catechetics embrace the new technologies of the 21 century?
Sr. Joan Cronin is the Executive Director of the Institute for Catholic Education in Toronto, Ontario.
Mgr Claude Champagne, OMI, Évêque d’Edmundston
