A
t our last Academy meeting several
memberssportedthesametie:anelegant model with stripes and the AEP
logo.Thisisoneofthelatestinitiativesofour
Academy. It is not simply a formal object: it
demonstrates our identity and gives us our
own common link. To wear it is to take pride
in membership of our Academy
and to be a part of a family of engaged and attentive European philatelists. One can take both pleasure and pride in wearing it. Furthermore it is elegant, made in
Come, to the north of Milan, a region noted for its quality silk productions. Those who were not at
Monaco can of course order one
and wear it proudly at philatelic
events!
The tie was not the only Italian AEP productionatMonaco.Asyouwillreadelsewherein
thisissueanotherexcellentexampleofItalian
workmanshipMuranoglassmadeitsowncontribution. However Monaco was of course
muchmorethanthese,itwasamajorphilatelic event, wonderfully organised by so many

Themethodofadmittingnewmembersintroduced in 2015 is proving its worth. New philatelistsarejoining,includingthosefromother
continents, but with an interest in European
philately. The new category of “candidate
members” is only a temporary status until

It is clear that an Academy has no reason to
exist if its members are not present and do

be as active as possible – at our AGM, at our
displays and AEP presentations or write
something for OPUS or Trait d'Union or contribute however possible. It would indeed be
sad for myself or my successor to ask for a
resignation because of a silence of three or
four years. This of course does not apply to
our older members who have already made
theircontributionstoEuropeanphilately.
The next major philatelic event takes place
overseas in New York and the AEP will take
part. Our Academy will then launch the next
OPUS entirely devoted to transatlantic mail. I
look forward to meeting many of you in the
BigApple.
Finally I must not miss out the major AEP
eventinVeniceonthe4-6November.Details
will be available soon but meanwhile please
putthedatesinyourdiaries.

A Call for OPUS XVI Contributions

As you know the theme for the next OPUS
(OPUS XVI) is “Transatlantic relations betweenEuropeandAmerica”.
AsthisOPUSwillbepresented,givenitssubject, at the World Stamp Show NY2016 to be
heldinNewYorkattheendofMay,Imustask
youtorespectstrictdeadlines.
I have already received some ten articles
whichIhaveeditedandadaptedtotheusual
OPUS format. The quality of these makes me
certainthatthiswillbeanOPUSofvery
highphilatelicmerit.
Severalarticleshavealreadybeenpromised. I await these with impatience and
ask the authors to respect the strict
deadline of 31 January 2016 which regrettablycannotbeextendedinorderto
allowmetocompletethisvolumewithin
thetimelimitsrequired.
I would add that the number of pages is not
infinite:giventhehighcostsofpostageitmust
notgoaboveagivenweightandifthatshould
occurthentheBoardwouldneedtomakedifficultdecisions.Clearlythefirstcriteriawould
bethevarietyandqualityofarticlesandifthis
didnotallowsufficientgroundstomakeareasoned selection then the date of submission
wouldhavetobetakenintoaccount.
I would like to thank all the authors, from
whose labours our readers can bene+it and

Mark Bottu (B) gives us a spirited account of
the postalhistory of Ghent. From German archaeologist digging in a Hittite fortress in

sent whose background is fully explained by
R. v. Scharpen.Igor Rodin (RU) takes us on a
trip into space with the latest letters sent to

cause undue concern. Frozen firmly the stamps of

in the rue de Gramont.
The apparatus havingstoppeditneededtobereplacedby
oneusingthestamp
opposite. But the
too delicate mechanism caused its final rejection after
just

days.

franked with a 30c
orange cancelled
by a horodateur"du". It was posted into the
tube system at office 3 in the Boulevard
Malesherbes on 14 January 1908 for office 8
in the rue deGramont where it was stamped
on the back the same day (last date known)
withthe"horloge"trialstamp.
