L
e Silence n’existe pas est une installation
vidéo de living art. Diffusée sur un grand écran
plasma, une vidéo montre une femme, cadrée en plan
poitrine, voilée par un tchadri (voile intégral afghan,
comportant juste une grille brodée au niveau des
yeux). Lorsqu’un spectateur s’approche de l’écran,
la femme enlève son tchadri et sourit au spectateur.
Elle reste ainsi tout le temps où le spectateur reste
devant elle et la regarde, ou si un autre spectateur
vient prendre la relève. Aussitôt que les spectateurs
s’éloignent et qu’elle se retrouve seule, l’image de
la femme est remplacée des images de lapidation.
Celles-ci durent une vingtaine de secondes, avant que
réapparaisse l’image initiale de la femme voilée.Si
le spectateur revient rapidement pendant la période
de lapidation, il ne peut en interrompre le cours, et le
femme voilée qui apparaît ensuite ne se découvrira à
nouveau qu’après un certain laps de temps.
Au travers du thème de la liberté de la femme,
cette installation parle de la responsabilité de notre
regard et de notre engagement : quels sont les
conséquences lorsque nous cessons cet engagement
? Or, pour Isabelle Bonté : « regarder nous engage ».
Le Silence n’existe pas is a living-art video
installation. Broadcast on a wide plasma screen, a
video shows a woman wearing a chadri (an Afghan
veil covering the whole body, except for the eye
area, which is covered by a concealing net). When
spectators draw nearer to the screen, the woman
lifts off her chadri and smiles to them. She stays in
this position for as long as a person stays in front of
her and looks at her, or if another spectator takes over.
As soon as the spectators move away and she is left
alone, the woman’s image is replaced by images of a
stoning. They stay on the screen for twenty seconds,
and are replaced by the initial image of the veiled
woman. If spectators rush back towards the screen
during the stoning scene, they are unable to interrupt
it, and the reappearing veiled woman will only be
able to lift her veil again after a set amount of time.
Via the theme of women’s freedom, this installation
is a reflection on how we look at things and on
commitment: What happens when we are no longer
committed ? To Isabelle Bonté, “looking at things is
like starting to commit”.

Après des études
de Mathématiques et
de Philosophie, Isabelle
Bonté s’engage dans des
études d’Art à l’ENSBAParis de 1995 à 1997. À la
suite de ses études, elle
commence un parcours de plasticienne. Depuis
2000 elle participe à de nombreuses expositions
à Paris et en province et a créé des sculptures
monumentales de commandes pour l’espace
public (Lille, Marcq en Baroeuil, Bussy St Georges,
Colombes, Pantin).
En 2005, elle fonde l’association Dédal(l)e,
pour placer le lieu de fabrication de l’art au cœur de
la cité, en rapport direct avec le citoyen, utilisant
les oeuvres multimédia comme vecteur de lien
social.
After studying mathematics and philosophy,
Isabelle Bonté undertook art studies at the ENSBAParis (National School of Fine Arts) from 1995 to
1997. After graduating, she started working as a
visual artist.
She has taken part in many exhibitions
in and outside of Paris since 2000, and has also

created monumental, government-commissioned
sculptures for display in public spaces (Lille, Marcq
en Baroeuil, Bussy St Georges, Colombes, Pantin).
In 2005, she started the Dédal(l)e association,
which seeks to bring art into the heart of the city, in
direct contact with the urban population. Meeting
and talking with people living in the Olympiades
neighbourhood (13th district in Paris) helped shape
her work “Embarcadère”, presented at “Nuit
Blanche 2006”, the city-wide exhibition in Paris.
She pursued this line of work in the context of the
Chinese New Year, with a “Workshop on Public
Reflection”.
