prochaine génération ».

S’il est vrai que le Concile Vatican II a été et demeure « un
authentique signe de Dieu pour notre temps » (Benoît XVI),
il importe pour l’Université Saint-Paul d’être au cœur d’une
réflexion visant à articuler les enjeux théologiques et
ecclésiologiques porteurs pour les générations à venir. Nous
sommes une université catholique offrant des programmes
ecclésiastiques, fondée par la Congrégation des Missionnaires
de Marie-Immaculée en 1889, et refondée en 1965 dans l’élan
de Vatican II. Dans cet esprit, nous cherchons à rejoindre
nos contemporains dans l’élan missionnaire de l’Église
« du même mouvement dont le Christ lui-même, par son
incarnation, s’est lié aux conditions sociales et culturelles
déterminées des hommes avec lesquels il a vécu » (Ad
Gentes, 10). Que ce colloque soit pour vous l’occasion de
réflexions et d’échanges fructueux et porteurs d’avenir.

I am pleased to welcome you to
the colloquium “Vatican II for
the Next Generation.”
Vatican II was and remains an “authentic sign of God for our
times” (Benedict XVI). It is important that Saint Paul University
be a center of reflection where we articulate the theological
and ecclesiological issues that must be carried forward for
generations to come. We are a Catholic university offering
ecclesiastical programs, founded by the Missionary Oblates
of Mary Immaculate in 1889, and refounded in 1965 in the
spirit of Vatican II. In that same spirit, we seek to engage with
contemporary society “for the same motive which led Christ
to bind Himself, in virtue of His Incarnation, to certain social
and cultural conditions of those human beings among whom
He dwelt” (Ad Gentes, 10). I hope this colloquium will give
you an occasion for a fruitful reflection and exchange that
can shape our future.

A major cultural change would appear to support
the view of those who no longer expect anything
from Vatican II. We will illustrate how the corpus
of the Council’s teaching and the conciliar event
itself present new avenues of transmission and
creativity, enabling present and future generations
to envision the future of the Church.
Christoph Theobald, SJ, Professor of Fundamental and Dogmatic
Theology (Centre Sèvres, Paris), has written widely on the history
of modern theology (particularly on Vatican II) and in the areas
of systematic theology and aesthetics. He is the author of

Les orientations du Concile Vatican II nous offrent
une vision de la mission de l’Église dans le monde
selon laquelle l’évangélisation est inséparable du
travail pour le développement humain dans toutes
ses formes. Comment cette vision pourrait-elle
nous inspirer et pourrait-elle informer une nouvelle
génération à s’engager dans une éthique centrée sur
la personne humaine dans un monde marqué par des
crises sociales et économiques d’envergure mondiales ?
Le Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, président du conseil
pontifical « Justice et Paix » depuis 2009, détient un doctorat en
études bibliques de l’Institut biblique à Rome, et enseigna pendant
maintes années au niveau du séminaire. Il fut ordonné au presbytérat
en 1975, et à l’épiscopat en 1993, pour desservir le diocèse du Cape
Coast, Ghana. Il a été président de la conférence épiscopale ghanéenne
de 1997 à 2005 et rapporteur général de la 2e Assemblée spéciale
pour l’Afrique du synode des Évêques en 2009.

The Second Vatican Council offers a vision of
the mission of the Church in the world, in which
evangelization is inseparable from work for human
development in all its forms. How can this vision
inspire and inform new generations committed to a
people-centered ethic in our contemporary context
marked by global social and economic crises?
Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, President of the Pontifical
Council for Justice and Peace since 2009, holds a doctorate in
Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome, and
taught for many years as a seminary professor. He was ordained
to the presbyterate in 1975 and to the episcopate in 1993, serving
as Archbishop of the Diocese of Cape Coast, Ghana. He was
President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference from 1997
to 2005 and General Relator of the 2nd Special Assembly for Africa
of the Synod of Bishops in 2009.

Richard R. Gaillardetz est professeur en théologie systématique
à Boston College. Il a publié plusieurs articles et livres, y compris
Keys to the Council: Unlocking the Teaching of Vatican II, avec
Catherine Clifford, Liturgical Press, 2012, et The Church in the
Making, Paulist, 2006. Il est actuellement President designé de
la Catholic Theological Society of America.
A noted theologian once described Vatican II as
“an unfinished building site.” We will explore ways
in which our church can build on the foundations
of the Council even as it addresses the new
questions and challenges facing our church today.
Richard R. Gaillardetz is the Joseph McCarthy Professor of Catholic
Systematic Theology at Boston College. He has published numerous
articles and has authored and co-authored several books including,
Keys to the Council: Unlocking the Teaching of Vatican II,
co-authored with Catherine Clifford, Liturgical Press, 2012, and
The Church in the Making, Paulist, 2006. He is currently the
president-elect of the Catholic Theological Society of America.

Un concile est un moment de dialogue intense

Vatican II, le Pape Paul VI a insisté sur « ce désir
de donner aux rapports intérieurs de l’Église la
marque d’un dialogue entre les membres d’une
communauté » (Ecclesiam Suam), un échange qui
s’étend aux autres églises chrétiennes, aux autres
religions, et à l’humanité entière dans une série de
cercles concentriques. L’expérience de la conciliarité
est essentielle à notre façon de faire Église et de
proclamer l’Évangile au 21e siècle.
Catherine E. Clifford est professeure et vice-doyenne de la Faculté
de théologie de l’Université Saint-Paul. Elle est co-auteure, avec

A council is a moment of intense dialogue in
the life of the Church. Midway through the
Second Vatican Council, Pope Paul VI insisted
that “the Church’s internal relationships should
take the form of a dialogue” (Ecclesiam Suam),
an exchange extended in a series of concentric
circles to include other Christian Churches, other
religions, and all of humankind. The experience of
conciliarity is essential to our way of being Church
and to the proclamation of the Gospel in the
21st century.
Catherine E. Clifford is Professor and Vice-Dean of the Faculty
of Theology at Saint Paul University, Ottawa and she is director
of the Centre for Vatican II and 21st Century Catholicism. She
is co-author, with Richard Gaillardetz, of Keys to the Council,
Liturgical Press, 2012, and co-editor with Gilles Routhier and
Michael Attridge of Vatican II: Canadian Experiences, University
of Ottawa Press, 2011.

Certains proposent une lecture séquentielle de
l’histoire de l’Église : au programme pastoral mis en
avant par le Concile Vatican II, programme adapté
aux années 1960 et qui se serait avéré un échec, se
substituerait aujourd’hui un nouveau programme,
adapté au nouveau millénaire. La présente communication voudrait proposer une autre lecture du
devenir du catholicisme et montrer que la nouvelle
évangélisation, à défaut de trouver son véritable
fondement dans le Concile Vatican II, ne saura
rencontrer en profondeur nos contemporains.
Professeur titulaire et vice-doyen de la Faculté de théologie et de
sciences religieuses de l’Université Laval, la recherche de Gilles
Routhier porte, depuis plus de 20 ans, sur Vatican II, son histoire,
sa réception et son herméneutique. Il est auteur et directeur de
maintes publications, y compris La théologie catholique entre

Some authors propose a successive reading of
church history where the pastoral program put
forth by Vatican II and the adaptations of the
1960s have failed and must be replaced today
by a new program adapted to the new millenium.
We will propose another reading of Catholicism’s
evolution and demonstrate that the new evangelization will not engage our contemporaries in a
profound manner unless it finds its true foundation
in Vatican II.
Gilles Routhier is Professor and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of

Vatican Council was its effort to develop a rich
theological understanding of the place of the laity
in the Church. This workshop will explore two
different theological understandings of the laity
that can be found in the Council documents and
then consider their helpfulness for the Church today.
Richard R. Gaillardetz is the Joseph McCarthy Professor of Catholic
Systematic Theology at Boston College. He has published
numerous articles and has authored or co-authored eight books
including, Keys to the Council: Unlocking the Teaching of Vatican
II, co-authored with Catherine Clifford, Liturgical Press, 2012. He is
currently the president-elect of the Catholic Theological Society
of America.

The paradoxical challenge of the post-Vatican
II Church: while the Council invited the Eastern
Churches to renew themselves in accord with
their ancient traditions, efforts at self-governance
(Ukrainian Patriarchate) and ecumenism (Zoghby
initiative) have been stymied by the Vatican. This
current situation underlines the need for a fuller
development of our understanding of the Church.
Myroslaw Tataryn is Professor of Religious Studies at St. Jerome’s
University in Waterloo. His areas of specialization are Eastern Christian
theology and Eastern Christians in Canada. He has published and
lectured internationally. His co-authored trinitarian approach to
understanding disability will be published by Novalis in 2013.

les documents conciliaires sont à l’arrière-plan et
forment l’encadrement théologique de ces outils.
Yvonne Tregonning (Maillet) détient une maîtrise en théologie du
Collège dominicain d’Ottawa. Elle est actuellement une personne

Julien Hammond is the Director of Evangelization and Catechesis
for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton. He is also the
Ecumenical Officer of that Archdiocese responsible for inter-Christian and interfaith relations for the local church in central Alberta.
He serves on the Edmonton and District Council of Churches, the
Edmonton Interfaith Centre for Education and Action, the Western
Diocesan and Eparchial Coordinators of Ecumenism, and the
Canadian Roman Catholic-United Church dialogue.

A look at how the “Decree on Ecumenism” (Unitatis
Redintegratio) and subsequent Church teaching
on Christian unity has changed and could change
our ecclesial lives in parishes, schools, and dioceses.
In light of Catholic principles for ecumenical engagement, we will also reflect on how ecumenical
dialogues open a door to joint prayer and study,
common witness and mission.
Donald Bolen served at the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian
Unity from 2001 to 2008. Ordained Bishop of Saskatoon in 2010, he
is currently the Roman Catholic co-chair of IARCCUM, a member
of the International Evangelical-Catholic Dialogue, co-chair of the
Canadian Anglican-Roman Catholic Dialogue Commission, and a
member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.

of Theology, University of St. Michael’s College, Toronto. He teaches

Reflecting on the historical context leading up to
the adaptation and renewal of religious life mandated by the Second Vatican Council in Perfectae
Caritatis, we will examine the continuing impact
of the Council’s directives for renewal and discuss
the challenges of identity and significance facing
religious life within the Church today.

sexuality has become a polarized dividing line in
the contemporary Catholic Church. Drawing on

to do in helping Catholics to integrate sexuality
and spirituality in the everyday moments of their
lives – and their bedrooms.
