BATUCADA is a new project by Marcelo Evelin/Demolition Inc. especially created for Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2014.
The event will include 50 performers and/or citizens from all over the world, a gathering of people of different
nationalities, occupations, social classes, ages, genders, communities, beliefs and ideals.
BATUCADA is an intervention in form of a parade starting on stage and overflowing onto the streets of Brussels,
engaging other citizens and redefining the landscape of public space.
“Batucada” refers to the percussion ensemble used in samba music. It is a common way of gathering people and
communities in Brazil, open to participation by all. In this event the main instruments used in the “Batucada” will be
the body and the singularities of each participant, as the rhythmical structures, repetitive style and fast pace of the
music are translated into a choreographic composition.
BATUCADA is an urban rite, a civil procession, the allegoric défilé of a hypnotic circus, a pagan carnival, a barbarian
feast, a masquerade protest, the bursting out of an inner revolution.
BATUCADA is a production of the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in coproduction with Charleroi Danses.
--Marcelo Evelin is a choreographer and performer who, after spending 20 years in Europe, returned to live and work
in his home town Teresina, on the fringes of Brazil.
He is a wonderfully unique artist, who dares to be demanding of his audience and is able to be thought-provoking
and enchanting at the same time!
In Belgium he has already presented two pieces: Matadouro in 2012 (Europalia Brazil & KFDA) and De repente fica
tudo preto de gente in 2013 (KFDA).

--Wanted: performers and citizens of all ages (18 to 90), interested in participating in this project!
Notion of French, Dutch or English is indispensable, as well as a will to engage to this project on a long term basis.
To: participate in a workshop and be part of the cast during 5 performances of BATUCADA next May.
Workshop dates: Mo 28 April untill We 21 May (evening rehearsals)
Performance dates: Thu 22, Fri 23 & Sa 24 May in Brussels within the context of the Kunstenfestivaldesarts; Fri 28 &
Sa 29 May in Charleroi within the context of the Biennale od urban art Asphalte (in the evening)
Profile: We would like to create a gathering of people of different nationalities, occupations, social classes, ages,
genders, ethnic groups, beliefs and ideals. We are looking for men, women, citizens, activists, performers, men and
women, straight, gay and queer – with or without experience in contemporary art, wishing to drum on pots and pans
and wanting to bring their bodies to the streets of Brussels to perform, to manifest, to celebrate!
We offer: a free participation in this exciting workshop with the renowned choreographer Marcelo Evelin, including 5
public performances!
To select 30 participants, we hold auditions (for a period of 4-5h) at La Raffinerie (Rue de Manchester, 21 - 1080
Brussels) on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 of February.
During these auditions, participants will work with Marcelo Evelin. There is no specific preparation needed to
participate at the auditions. Just bring comfortable clothes. The auditions will constitute of some simple actions:
simple movements and some work in space and with each other.

BATUCADA is een nieuw project van Marcelo Evelin/Demolition Inc., dat speciaal voor het Kunstenfestivaldesarts
2014 wordt gecreëerd. Het evenement verenigt 50 artiesten en/of burgers van over de hele wereld. Het is een
bijeenkomst van mensen van verschillende nationaliteiten, beroepen, sociale klassen, leeftijden, geslachten,
gemeenschappen, overtuigingen en idealen.
BATUCADA is een publieke interventie in de vorm van een parade die begint op een podium en overloopt in de
straten van Brussel, om zich zo te confronteren met andere burgers en om het landschap van de openbare ruimte te
herdefiniëren.
"Batucada" verwijst naar het slagwerk dat wordt gebruikt in sambamuziek. In Brazilië is het een gebruikelijke manier
om mensen en gemeenschappen te verzamelen. In dit evenement zullen de belangrijkste instrumenten van
"Batucada" het lichaam en de singulariteiten van elke deelnemer zijn. Zij vormen de basis van alle ritmische
structuren; de repetitieve stijl en het snelle tempo van de muziek worden vertaald in een choreografische
compositie.

heidens carnaval, een barbaar festijn, een maskerade protest, het uitbarsten van een innerlijke revolutie.

--Marcelo Evelin is een choreograaf en performer die, na een verblijf van 20 jaar in Europa, terugkeerde naar zijn
geboortestad Teresina, aan de rand van Brazilië, om er te wonen en te werken.
Hij is een heerlijk unieke kunstenaar, die veeleisend durft te zijn tegenover zijn publiek en erin slaagt om je
tegelijkertijd aan te zetten tot denken en te betoveren!
In België presenteerde hij al twee stukken: Matadouro in 2012 (Europalia Brazilië & KFDA) en De repente tudo Preto

activisten, performers, hetero, homo en queer - met of zonder ervaring in de hedendaagse kunst, die zin hebben om
te trommelen op potten en pannen en hun lichamen in de straten van Brussel willen brengen om te dansen, om zich
te manifesteren, om te vieren!
Wij bieden: een gratis deelname aan deze spannende workshop met de gerenommeerde choreograaf Marcelo Evelin
en aan 5 publieke optredens!
Om de deelnemers te selecteren, organiseren we audities (van 4-5u) in La Raffinerie (Rue de Manchester, 21-1080
Brussel) op zaterdag 15 en zondag 16 februari.
Tijdens deze audities zullen de deelnemers werken met Marcelo Evelin. Er is geen specifieke voorbereiding nodig om
deel te nemen aan de audities. Breng comfortabele kledij mee. Tijdens de audities vragen we een aantal eenvoudige
acties uit te voeren: eenvoudige bewegingen en wat werk in de ruimte en met elkaar.

BATUCADA est un nouveau projet de Marcelo Evelin/Demolition Inc., conçu spécialement pour le
Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2014.
L’événement réunira quelque 50 performeurs et/ou citoyens du monde entier, des personnes de nationalités,
occupations/métiers, classes sociales, âges, genres, communautés, croyances et idéaux différents.
BATUCADA est une intervention publique, une parade, qui partant d’un espace scénique déborde dans les rues de
Bruxelles, confrontant les citoyens rencontrés et redéfinissant le paysage de l’espace public.
Le terme “Batucada” réfère aux ensembles de percussions utilisés dans la samba qui, au Brésil, rassemblent des
personnes issues de tous les horizons. Pour cette BATUCADA, les principaux instruments utilisés seront les corps et
les singularités de chaque participant alors que les structures rythmiques, rapides et répétitives de la musique se
trouveront retranscrites dans la composition chorégraphique.
BATUCADA est un rite urbain, une procession citoyenne, le défilé allégorique d’un cirque hypnotique, un carnaval
païen, un festin barbare, une manifestation farce, l’explosion d’une révolution interne.
BATUCADA est une production du Kunstenfestivaldesarts en co-production avec Charleroi Danses.
---Marcelo Evelin est un chorégraphe et performeur, qui après avoir passé 20 ans en Europe, est rentré dans sa ville
natale, Térésina, située aux confins du Brésil pour y vivre et travailler.
Artiste profondément singulier, Evelin n’hésite pas à être exigeant avec son public en lui proposant des œuvres
suscitant tout autant la réflexion que l’enchantement.
Il a déjà présenté à Bruxelles les pièces: Matadouro en 2012 (Europalia Brésil & KFDA) et De repente fica tudo preto

Profile: nous voulons créer un groupe varié de personnes : des hommes, femmes, citoyens, activistes, performeurs,
hétéro, homo, trans – avec ou sans expérience de la scène artistique contemporaine, désireux de semer un joyeux
désordre musical et de descendre dans les rues pour performer, manifester, célébrer!

Nous offrons: une participation gratuite au workshop du chorégraphe brésilien Marcelo Evelin, incluant 5
performances publiques.
Pour sélectionner les 30 participants, Marcelo Evelin organise des auditions (durée 4-5h) à La Raffinerie (Rue de
Manchester, 21 - 1080 Brussels), les samedi 15 et dimanche 16 février 2014.
Aucune préparation n’est nécessaire pour l’audition. Mettez des vêtements confortables qui vous permettront
d’accomplir des actions et mouvements simples dans l’espace et avec les autres participants.
