The painting is focused on flight, featuring a flock of Canadian geese lifting off the lake, flying up and away. This massive acrylic painting was a wonderful challenge; to create an accurate and artistic painting that represented the birds in their natural landscape. In November, this same large painting will be part of a solo show for Valerie Rogers at Salmon Arm’s SAGA art gallery. 8 Members’ News continued… Maryvne Jenoff SCA, has 3 pieces in the “p.ART.icle Affordable Art Show,” Propeller Gallery, 30 Abell Street, Toronto, September 24 to October 4, including a Nuit Blanche event on October 3. He took another workshop in Rockport Maine with Thomas Schaller. He was juried into the Society of Canadian Artist’s 47th Open National Juried Exhibition and the North East Watercolor Society’s 39th Annual International Exhibition in the USA. He is one half of a 2 man show with sculptor Arend Nieuwland at the Santa Fe Gallery in Owen Sound from Sept. 5 - Oct. 3. The Kings Landing Foundation’s first annual plein air festival, Paint the Past, was held on August 22 and 23, 2015 and attracted artists from the Maritimes and Maine to Kings Landing Historical Settlement, near Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. Bruce Newman, associate SCA member and plein air artist from Fredericton attends several plein air events each year, and said Paint the Past was among the best he has participated in. Bruce won first prize of $1,000 for his painting of Kings Landing’s Churches. He was also named “Artist in Residence" for a year. Stephen Rolls of Sydney, Nova Scotia took home the $500 second place prize and Dale Cook of Quispzmsis, New Brunswick won third and $250. This event hopes to raise awareness of plein air painting in the region and in doing so, help support the beautiful and vibrant Kings Landing Historical Settlement. Thanks to his vision and leadership, 1st Vice-President, Peter Gough, SCA has made another strategic in-road and we are pleased to announce a partnership with the Tom Thomson Gallery. You'll be seeing the fresh green logo Canadian Spirit 2015 featured on many of the SCA publications over the next few years in recognition of this special partnership and combined support of our upcoming anniversaries. http://tomthomson.org/ canadian-spirit/partnerevents/ Ann Kruzelecky, SCA President 10 Associates’ News A SUCCESS story for an International Artistic Residency! The International Artistic Residency organized by Mont-St-Hilaire artist Nancy Stella Galianos is now complete and with positive results. "I am delighted with this experience which took place in my own region," said Ms. Galianos with great joy. After presenting their works at the Opening Reception August 8th at La Maison de la Culture Villebon de Beloeil, the five artists from Greece, Spain, the United States and Quebec, continued to stay to visit the region. Starting with the city of Chambly all the way to Saint-Antoine-surRichelieu. The artists also went on a day trip in Old Quebec which allowed them to discover the cradle of French-Canadian culture. They also visited Montreal to see the exhibition "Metamorphosis - In Rodin's studio" at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The Artistic Residency included the following artists: Nancy Stella Galianos, Aspasia Melis, Stacie Flint, Katerina Melis and Maria Angeles Hegglin. These artists took the opportunity to express their creativity outside their usual environment by creating works inspired by our quaint Montérégie region, in "plein air" and free workshops. They also met and exchanged with members of our arts and cultural community, visited historical sites and enjoyed many local dishes. In addition to "plein air" painting, these foreign artists had the opportunity to attend two intensive workshops led by Françoise Falardeau and Gaëtane Dion. Both well-known painters of our region, F. Falardeau is president of Atelier Libre de Peinture de Beloeil and Gaëtane Dion owns the B& B and Art Gallery in St-Antoine-SurRichelieu. aint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu. The Artistic Residency included the following artists: Nancy Stella Galianos, Aspasia Melis, Stacie Flint, Katerina Melis and Maria Angeles Hegglin. 11 Hello Fellow SCA members: Geese are flying overhead in noisy V-patterns, some broken - others well-defined, on their way to winter refuges as I write this message. I’m both humbled and grateful to be serving the Society for one last year, as President of SCA. Over the past six years, Josy Britton, SCA Past President and a committed team possessing passion, expertise and a unique diversity have continued the Society's mission by setting this organization on a well -defined path as a leader, fulfilling its mandate to support Canada's fine arts and artist members from coast to coast. I am grateful to have been part of this team and humbled by the confidence the Board of Directors, Chairs and Regional Reps. have shown in me as I pass the torch on to the new SCA President at the Annual General Meeting on June 3, 2016. Since the AGM last May, thanks to the efforts of Karin Richter, SCA Exhibitions Chair, Andrea Howson, Publicity Chair and Monika Wright, SCA Webmaster, the Society has hosted two very successful exhibitions - the 47th Open at the Gainsborough Gallery in Calgary, and the On-Line exhibition. Energies are now being directed to ramp up for the Annual Elected members exhibition. Artworks will be shipped shortly to their destination in Markham, Ontario. The Mary Pratt Crystal bowl and awards of Excellence and Honourable Mention will be presented at the opening on October 31st by SCA 2nd Vice President Ortansa Moraru, SCA. Keeping track of payments and membership has always been a bit of a challenge , but it really came to a head this year. As is the case with many organizations, SCA-related payments of numerous types are received via PayPal service from the web site but also by cheque so there are currently several systems in place with a bit of disconnect between that we are trying to resolve. This has also been compounded with the transition between membership chairs. At the recent board meeting in September, a majority vote was supported to slightly alter the popular $45 rate of many payment types (exhibition fee and jury fee) by +/- a Looney. The Associate's annual fee of $45 (and the balance of newly-Elected membership fees after being accepted in the October jury) must remain as such until the organization has a chance to vote at the AGM as per the bylaws. Another vote was called for and supported to discontinue the printing of the SCA membership directory. The SCA web site will serve as the main point of visibility to the organization. With help from Radii Productions, the SCA's web development consultants, all users of the PayPal service are now prompted to enter the name of the person for whom they are paying. Hopefully these recent and proposed changes will clear up these issues so our dear Treasurer Amanda Kalcic, Bernice Lester (the Letter Perfect lady), Edward Xu, SCA Membership Chair and Kathy Hildebrandt, SCA Past Membership chair can move on to other things. We thank the everyone for their patience!! Some important things are on the horizon for the SCA —thanks to Ann Harvey, SCA the "Save the Date" has gone out for the annual Winter Holiday party at the Arts and Letters Club, Toronto on Friday, November 27, 2015. Please attend! We'll open with cocktails at 6 pm, dinner at 7 pm, then a wonderful after-dinner presentation by Doug Purdon, SCA, the annual Art Exchange and the announcement of the newly-Elected members with a presentation of their submitted artwork. This year's fall membership application process is being chaired by Past-President Josy Britton, SCA. The SCA is deeply indebted to Josy for helping out in this capacity! 12 Another wonderful speaker is waiting in the wings for the Spring AGM. A review of the Bylaws which contain obsolete guidelines and policies is long overdue and needs to be addressed to reflect the organization's current situation. In 2017, the SCA will celebrate 60 years, and thanks to Peter Gough's and Karin Richter's efforts, plans are underway to highlight this important landmark which coincides with the 150 Anniversary of Canada and the 100th Anniversary of Tom Thomson’s passing. On a sad note, Mary Elizabeth Duggan's mother Norma passed away suddenly in July at the age of 102. Norma was blessed with good health, a keen mind and artistic talent. An avid watercolourist, she enjoyed her summers at her cottage where she painted a vast collection of Ontario landscapes. In lieu of flowers, Mary Elizabeth, SCA's Chair of Honours and Awards Committee and Director has generously rerouted some of the donations made in Norma's name to the Society of Canadian Artists to be used solely for the Duggan Canadian Landscape Award. This award, introduced for 2016 is to be presented annually for 20 years at the open-juried show. I wish to thank the board members and chairs for their on-going dedication in supporting the SCA. As past Webmaster I'd also like to thank those Elected members who have recently opted to take advantage of their complimentary page on the SCA website and strongly urge others to do the same. Elected members interested in uploading the short bio and single image to the SCA website can email: [email protected] for assistance. Monika is doing a great job! Thanks to Marissa Sweet , SCA newsletter editor for another beautifully designed issue et un grand merci à mon cher collègue du Québec, Raymond Quenneville, SCA for filling two roles as Quebec Regional rep. and translator for the Society. Thank you for the opportunity to serve and I look forward to 2016 being rewarding - creatively as well as professionally for the SCA. If you have suggestions, please let us know. I was one of the artists sending in my two cents and that gave me the idea that this could be an interesting exchange of experiences and ideas within the SCA membership. Below is what I had to say and I invite you to offer what you experience in your life as an artist in an upcoming issue of the SCA news. It would be interesting and fun to hear how we all cope with the challenges of being an artist! Start by introducing yourself briefly, then answer the 2 questions. Include a photo of yourself! Artist Karin Richter SCA, Calgary, Alberta www.karinrichter.com Karin Richter is a Calgary artist who is totally immersed in art. She produces paintings in an impressionistic style in different media for exhibitions across Canada and participates in the US art scene by entering a number of exhibitions every year. She makes her living from teaching daily classes and weekend workshops to a variety of aspiring artists across the country and also conducts painting holidays on land and at sea in Canada and abroad. Karin has always been an active participant in the art community as a volunteer, juror, critic and curator which earned her the Immigrant of Distinction Award for Arts and Culture in 2010. What job(s) have you worked while being a practicing artist? I have had a successful art teaching career for almost 20 years which pays my bills more or less but does not allow for much else like new roofs, car repairs and dental jobs which is why I have had to come up with creative solutions to supplement my income. I combined my art interests with previous business and language skills and have run painting holidays successfully for many years. I also have come up with a number of products that not only carry my name but help get my name out there. I always look for opportunities and not a day goes by where I don’t do something to further my career. 19 continuation How did that work affect you as an artist (creatively, financially, socially etc.)? Since my family is grown now, I can afford to devote all my time to my passion of the arts. I love what I do, teaching others to reach their potential and do my share as a volunteer, but it is tiring and at the end of the day, depletes a person of energy needed to be creative. Not only that but it takes time away from developing one’s own career which, as we all know, is a full-time job in itself. I have managed to keep my head above water but I do work long hours each day to keep all the balls in the air. Having said that, I have always realized that much inspiration comes from the world and the environment we live in and no matter what we have to do, there is a constant influx of ideas from the people around us. They provide the stuff that our artwork is made of. They provide unlimited stimulus, they share in our successes and failures and give valuable feedback. An artist is not an island. So when I get a little wary of my life as a struggling artist I often remind myself of how lucky I am to be in this career. It may be a struggle financially at times and I would like to see more support of the arts in general but it is what I have chosen to do. I am in charge of my own destiny. I am enjoying the ride! A note from Marissa Sweet SCA, Newsletter Editor Please feel free to post or tweet a line or two about your upcoming shows, awards and art related tidbits on our FaceBook page, which is SC Artists and on our Twitter feed which is @SocCanArtists.
