Another successful season for all horse racing enthusiasts
Another year has passed and the 2012 horse racing season was another one
full of exciting competitions and championships. During this year, and thanks to
the financial support of a number of entities, the Malta Racing Club managed to
organize a number of competitions.
The club also continued to upgrade the Marsa Racetrack Complex with major
works on the main stand and the importation of new sand which was placed in
the main track. These works were only possible thanks to the financial support of
the Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport which is Malta’s Sport Authority and the Parliamentary Secretariat
for Youth and Sport led by the Hon Clyde Puli.
As in the past years, in 2012, Malta once again hosted one of the stages of the Mediterranean
Championship for Drivers. This heat, held on the 31st March, was won by Maltese veteran
driver Raymond Clifton with French trotter Polytain. Champion driver Noel Baldacchino also won
another heat of this Championship which was organized at the UFA Racetrack in Russia.
As in the previous editions, in this publication, our readers can find information about the major
races not only held locally but also in the international scene. Official statistics issued by the Malta
Racing Club are also being published in this annual. Finally I would like to thank those companies
that once again are helping me financially to publish this annual. Special thanks goes also to the
racetrack photographer Alex Azzopardi and to the MRC officials for their constant support.

The Malta Horse Racing Awards 2012
The second edition of the Malta Horse Racing Awards were held on Friday 14th February
2013 at the Dolmen Hotel in Qawra. The presentations’ night, organised thanks to
the initiative of Kenneth Vella, KMS Director, rewarded the sport’s main protagonists
throughout the year. A number of awards and recognitions were presented during the
ceremony with the main honours going to Noel Baldacchino (best driver), Ramon Grima
as best jockey, Rodney Gatt as best apprentice driver while Zilver Boko and Cheeky
Jack were honoured as the most consistent horses.

Mediterranean Championships for Drivers 2012
On Saturday 31st March 2012, Malta hosted one of the heats of the Mediterranean Championship,
a race which was held o a short distance of 2140m. Only six drivers took part in this event. It
was Maltese Raymond Clifton who finished first with Polytain. This horse clocked an average
time of 1.17.6” per kilometer. Petit Veinard (Attilio Golia – Italy), Wonderofyou (Dusan Zorko –
Slovenia) and Syllabub (Olga Bondar – Ukraine) ended respectively in second, third and fourth
place.

Ready Cash does it again at Vincennes
On Sunday 29th January 2012, Ready Cash, the seven-year-old French trotter, won the 91st
Prix d’Amerique at the Vincennes racetrack, France. The race, with €500,000 for the winner, was
held in front of 50,000 spectators and over a long distance of 2,700m. Victory was Ready Cash’s
second in a row at the mythical race in Paris. Eighteen horses lined up for the race considered
by many as the World Championship for trotters.Lisa America (Dominik Locqueneux) was the
fastest after the official start and this Italian mare opened a half-length’s lead from Timoko
(Richard Westerink) and Roxane Griff (Eric Raffin).
However, after 500m Lisa America was overtaken by Timoko with favourites Ready Cash (Franck
Nivard) and Maharajah (Orjan Kihlstrom) running on the outside in fourth and fifth positions.
Some 300 metres from the post, Timoko also started to slow down and Ready Cash took its
chance well, dashing strongly home and finishing the race first ahead of Roxane Griff, outsider
The Best Madrik (Jean Etienne Dubois), Maharajah and Timoko. Ready Cash won the race in an
average time of 1.12” per kilo-metre to equal the record time established in 2007 by Offshore
Dream. Ready Cash is sired by French stallion Indy de Vive and Kidea.

Mediterranean Championships for Drivers 2012
Commander Crowe wins the 2012 edition of the Elitloppet
On Sunday 27th May, the 2012 edition of the Elitloppet competition was organized at the
Solvalla Race Track in Sweden. This competition consisted of two heats on a mile distance with
the first four horses from every heat qualifying for the final race which was held during the same
meeting and also on a short distance of 1600m. It was Norwegian Yarrah Boko (Ulf Ohlsson)
which triumphed in the first heat in an average time of 1.09.7” per kilometer and from German
Brioni (Joakim Lovgren), Sebastian K (Lutfi Kolgjini) and French Rapide Lebel (Eric Raffin).
Swedish Commander Crowe (Christophe Martens) finished first in the second heat. This horse
clocked an average time of 1.09.7” per kilometer, which is a new record for the competition.
American Arch Madness (Brian Sears), French Oyonnax (Kenneth Nielsen) and German Classic
Grand Cru (Bjorn Goop) also made it for the final stage.
In the final it was Commander Crowe which took the lead with a lap to go and won by half
length from Arch Madness, Classic Grand Cru and Yarrah Boko. The winner did an average time
of 1.10.4” per kilometer.
Monterosso wins Dubai World Cup
On Saturday 31st March 2012, Monterosso led home a Godolphin one-two in the Dubai World
cup over 2000m at Meydan racecourse when he past his stablemate Capponi, to win the
World’s richest race. The five year old, ridden by Mickael Barzalona, advanced from a prominent
position to win a race in which he finished third in 2011. The contested early pace helped to
bring Monterosso’s stamina into play as Capponi finally gave way after challenging for the lead
throughout. It was the perfect end of the $27.25 million extravaganza for Sheikh Mohammed,
the Ruler of Dubai who owns both Monterosso and Capponi.
Neptune Collonges wins Grand National
On Saturday 14th April, Neptune Collonges won the Grand National at Aintree racecourse to
become the first grey to win the race since Nicolaus Silver in 1961. The Daryl Jacobs-ridden
33-1 Neptune Collonges, who succeeded where trainer Paul Nicholls’s previous 52 runners
had failed, beat home Sunnyhillboy (16/1) in a thrilling finish which saw the winner reel in the
runner-up in the final furlong and win by just a nose.
However, the race was overshadowed by the deaths of Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Synchronised,
who fell at Bechers first time round, and According to Pete, who came down at Bechers on the
second circuit. The authorities had actually modified Bechers after a couple of runners died
there last year and for Synchronised’s trainer Jonjo O’Neill it brought back the awful memory
of when he rode then Gold Cup winner Alverton in the National and came to grief at Bechers
and was put down in 1979.
For 27-year-old Jacobs it was an emotional win as he had contemplated retiring from the sport
when his best friend Kieran Kelly was killed in a riding accident in 2003.Indeed the Irishman,
on hearing he had prevailed in a stewards enquiry, pointed to the heavens, saluting his dead
friend.
Solemia wins Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe
On Sunday 7th October 2012, French outsider Solemia got up on the line to edge out Japapnese
rider Orfevre and win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in Paris. Orfevre, Japan’s 2011
horse of the year, looked certain to claim his country’s first victory in Europe’s most prestigious
race when he swept through to hit the front under Christophe Soumillon. But the 7-2 chance,
hung right towards the rails and was caught by the fast finishing Solemia, an outsider ridden
by Olivier Peslier and trained by Carlos Laffon Parias.
Green Moon first in Melbourne Cup
Green Moon, trained in Australia by Robert Hickmott and ridden by Brett Prebble, has won the
152nd running of the Melbourne Cup at Flemington which was held on Tuesday 6th November
2012. The 19-1 shot, formerly trained in Britain by Harry Dunlop, triumphed from Fiorente and
Jakkalberry.
