Tip-to-Tip
The Code of the Trail
hen the Prince Edward Island railway was abandoned
in 1989, Islanders were quick to notice a unique
opportunity. The idea of a tip-to-tip shared-use walking and
cycling trail was born and the final link is now in place.
The tip-to-tip route from Tignish to Elmira totals over
270 kilometers but 400 kilometers of excellent rolled stone
dust surface are available for use. Branch trails extend into the
heart of Charlottetown and to the waterside communities of
Souris, Georgetown, Montague, Wood Islands, Murray River
and Murray Harbour, plus the link to the Confederation Bridge
in Borden-Carleton. Travelers to the Island for over a century
have enjoyed the pastoral landscape, woodlands and rivers
between tiny Island communities. The lack of any real wilderness
in PEI means that frequent villages along the way offer cyclists
and hikers a convenient selection of accommodations, food
and services.

I
n an effort to increase public safety on the Confederation
Trail, new 911 signage has been installed at key road/trail
intersections across the province. Trail users will be able to use
their personal cell phone in the event of an emergency to call
911 from one of these intersections and quote the civic address
location as indicated by the white on blue, bilingual signs. A 911
Calltaker will confirm call back number and establish the nature
of the emergency before placing callers in direct contact with an
appropriate service provider. Callers are encouraged to remain
at the road/trail intersection in order to meet and provide
direction to emergency service providers upon their arrival.

fin d’améliorer la sécurité publique sur le Sentier de
la Confédération, un nouvel affichage 911 a été installé
à des intersections sentier/route importantes dans la province.
Les utilisateurs du sentier seront capables de se servir de leur
cellulaire personnel en cas d’urgence afin d’appeler le 911 à partir
de l’une de ces intersections et de donner l’emplacement de son
adresse municipale telle qu’indiquée sur les affiches bilingues
blanches sur fond bleu. Un ou une téléphoniste du 911 confirmera
le numéro de rappel, précisera la nature de l’urgence avant de
mettre la personne qui appelle en contract avec le fournisseur de
service approprié. Nous encourageons les personnes qui
appellent à demeurer à l’intersection sentier/route afin de
rencontrer les fournisseurs du service d’urgence à leur arrivée
et de leur fournir des directions.
Même si nous avons fait des tests de réception sur les cellulaires
à ces points d’affiche servant à rapporter les urgences, la réception

Achievement Certificate available at any of the province’s
Visitor Information Centres. Along with the certificate you will
receive information on the Island Trails’ “Rossignol Award”
and a ballot for a chance to win PEI apparel.

Although tests have been conducted on cell phone reception at
these emergency reporting signage points, reception can vary
depending upon atmosphere conditions, type of phone, battery
strength, etc.

n 1989, lorsque l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard a abandonné le
système ferroviaire, les Insulaires ont vite réalisé l’occasion
unique qui se présentait à eux. Est alors apparue l’idée de créer
un sentier de randonnée pédestre et cycliste qui sillonnerait l’île
d’une extrémité à l’autre. Le dernier tronçon est maintenant
complété. Le trajet d’une extrémité à l’autre, soit de Tignish à
Elmira, représente près de 270 kilomètres, mais au total, 400
kilomètres de piste d’excellente qualité sur laquelle on a appliqué
de la poudre de pierre attendent les randonneurs. Des raccourcis
mènent au cœur de Charlottetown de même que dans les
collectivités riveraines de Souris, Georgetown, Montague, Wood
Islands, Murray River et Murray Harbour, en plus d’un tronçon
qui se rend au pont de la Confédération, à Borden-Carleton.
Depuis plus d’un siècle, les voyageurs qui viennent à l’Île goûtent
aux paysages champêtres, aux régions boisées et aux rivières qui
séparent les minuscules collectivités de l’Île. La rareté des
véritables espaces de nature sauvage à l’Î.-P.-É. se traduit par la
présence d’un chapelet de villages longeant le sentier et offrant
au randonneur cycliste ou pédestre toute une gamme de services,
d’hébergement et de restaurants.
